  • Arrived on my feet at 18 and left on my back at 19. Born in the USA, grew up in Vietnam.

  • I turned 21 after being in Vietnam 2 weeks. This was in 1968. I waited for 9 months to go to Sydney on R&R.The Aussies are the greatest people that I have met and have the best beer. Those of us who made it home have Agent Orange on our tail. First time I have heard this song, about time after 40 years, brings it all back.

  • war's a bitch but sometimes it has to happen

  • its benn 40 years and all i have to do i close my eyes and i can flash back. this song really hits home. sorry mate, we'll are be together soon.

  • Wow. This song is real deep. Joinin the USMC at 18, 1 1/2 more years

  • Thank you sir, for your contribution. :) It will not be forgotten.

  • A well written song that I've never heard and great tribute to those who fought for freedom. Hope you don't mind me sharing a video with a song I wrote about this same subject matter. Mark

  • I dont think these guys will ever forget the way they were treated when they got home, to me this is australias biggest shame and there is no way to make it up to them. To the people behind this mistreatment of these heroes I hope you find it hard to sleep and are ashamed of ur disgusting hurtful actions when they returned home to no parade and no thanks. Thankyou viet-vets for being willing to risk ur life 4 ur country and thanku to those who made the ultimate sacrafice. L.W.F

  • thanks boys.we thank you's every day....you are heroes to me and my country...aussie pride

  • Very impressive. Even a war that may not have been that clever obviously was carried out by real heroes who gave all they had and who deserve all respect we have. Very impressive.

  • Bloody well said !

  • Any vets check this you tubey thing out?

my old mans a vet and like all of you a true hero.

its rare to get the chance to chat one about general life.

    would be my honour

  • Peter thanks for responding to my previous comment I am glad you did. I saw I Was Only 19 and was held captive by the whole video experience. I had never heard the song or seen many of the photos. You have a great talent for putting the vids together I will watch the rest that you have posted. Keep up the great work. Gday from Chicago

  • Met several aussies while in Nam...they are still my best mates today...though a world apart.

    Jerry B. in TN

  • We can't blame those who went to war. Their wives and families complain about how they isolate themselves and they should get over the war, but it's something that you can't get over. I've seen war and what it does to people. It is torture. I once met a man who had been to war, he didn't kill, but he always had his gun with him. That's more traumatic that anything else we've ever seen or know. Don't blame them, blame the government. Beautiful song, I heard it today in class, most of us cried.

  • They gave all.

  • made me cry many times.. very emotional to see such good friends lose eachother in war.. and a beautiful song also.. A beautiful memorial.. i'm 29.. never been in a war.. but just can feel the comradry and what a loss to lose a good friend.

  • me 2 my old mans a vet nzir victor2

  • Lest We Forget

  • I'm very sorry for your loss Peter.

This is a particularly evocative tribute to TJ - the film you've made - and this Redgum version is the best I've heard. I keep playing it.

    Thankyou.

  • Great vid man

  • That was great, Thanks! excellent what you did with the photos.

    What is the Spanish dancer?

  • Hi 'tozzarozza' thanks for your comment. Spanish Dancer is slang for 'Cancer'.

  • cancer

  • I just came by this somehow, but I've lived long enough to know,I thought, cause I didn't know that aussies were part of this nightmare, god help me us, and what else can I say except that its still too real and to those young lives sacrified there is nothing but sorrow and thanks. No,of course, it's not enough...

  • From an American who appreciates it, please accept my blessings and gratitude for standing by my countrymen. You are champions and heroes, and I love you for it.

  • Great post petervee60. I thought the mix of photos was a great tribute to your mate T.J. A man like all Vietvets gave away their best years of their life. Aust should be eternaly grateful, for such men.

  • Thanks 'pnewso72'. TJ and I grew up together as kids. He survived his tour 'in country' and returned in one piece. To loose him to the 'Spanish Dancer' at the prime of his life was tragic.

  • Awesome song and video. Thank you for making it.

  • Thanks for your comment and support 'MarcusP52'.

  • Thanks for the reminder that we Americans do a lot more than just destroy our own young men with our stupid wars.

My respects and thanks to all the Aussies that have fought beside our guys over the decades.

  • Thanks for your comment 'Critter183'. Yes, our men and now our men and women have fought together against a common foe over a long period of time. Most call it the action of allies, I'd rather call it the support of a 'Mate'. Because I have no doubt that if we Aussies got ourselves in the 'Shit' sort of speak then I know that our mates in the USA would not let us down.

  • australians always fight other peoples wars , and we do it with courage and conviction. God rest those poor souls that died doing there duty. may we remember them.

  • actually france caused vietnam because they got their asses kicked and left.

  • I gather you're not aware that the Indochina War of 1945-1954 started with Britain, France AND THE REARMED JAPANESE ARMY going to war with the Viet Minh for a year to reimpose French rule...? If you don't know that, then find out, I'm not holding your hand and spoon-feeding your ignorant mouth.

  • lot of people dont realish the british had troops in vietnam not many admittedly but some of are naval forces were involed

  • Ignorance isn't something to be punished for. I'm ignorant about some parts of my life. It's not bad, it just numbs the pain.

  • Thanks narara2. This song and initiatives like 'YouTube' will help in ensuring that we all remember. I don't think it will be long before someone creates a song as popular as this one to remember and support our troops in Afghanistan and Iraq.

  • ive liked that song since i was about 5
