I once improvised on the theme "Three Blind Mice" in modal form, just to see if anyone could recognize the tune. Everyone thought it was brilliant. hehehehehe
Next time you hear an improvisation, PAY ATTENTION!
I was sitting next to her on the console when she was improvising a lovely melody with amazing skill and technique for an ordinary workday communion. And she had nothing but a tiny sheet of paper with 6 chords written on it!!
I agree she is wonderful. I had the great fortune of playing in an improvisation masterclass with her as well as having a lesson a few weeks ago. She's brilliant at repertoire, technique, and all kinds of improvisation - including atonal. But melodic and modal improvisation is definitely where she shines the most I feel (and she stated they are her favorite).

A beautiful serene piece of music, just the right thing to put you in the right frame of mind for a peaceful night's sleep. In all ways I concur with GJmusique, below. I wonder if Ms Cauchefer-Choplin's melody was original or given. Both she and her colleague Daniel Roth have a welcoming and relaxed attitude towards visitors to the organ loft which is great to see.
What a beast this instrument is! I am constantly in awe of the abilities of masters like Madame Sophie-Veronique. How anyone learns how to play the organ well is beyond me. Wonderful, very beautiful improvisation.
There is nowadays a solution for noisy barkermachines, created by the dutch organbuilder Elbertse organbuilders, they keep the orginal barkermachines intact, but they have a clever solution for the noise
There is nowadays a solution for the disturbing noise. The dutch organbuilder Elbertse has a clever solution. They leave the orginal barker machine original, but have a very clever solution to reduce the noise
@GJmusique I agree. Sometimes,( with all due respect to other titulaires), their improvisations are so far out harmonically. It is indeed refreshing to hear a simple melody so beautifully improvised.
@DZmusique Actually, I enjoy both. "Atonal" improvisations can be extremely interesting . . . but, only so if the organist is exceptionally skilled with dissonant progressions.
I wholeheartedly agree with you, Mme. Choplin is a fine lady and an prodigious organist.
She really is the best of this generation, her only rival is Thierry Escaich of St.Etienne du Mont i suppose. But i love her deep religious endorsement. Also her poems with organ music
The barker machine make a lot of noises. Is that not disturbing you when you're playing. Or do you get used to it? Is there nowadays not a solution for that annoying noises. Still love your improvisation.
Extraordinary improvisation! That's noticable how beautifull solo line sounds first on positif, because of Unda maris and flute, and then on G. Ch. with all the fonds together... but that's St. Sulpice Cavaille-Coll - not a one of many.
WHY!!!! do people persist in writing down others' imrovisations? VILE!!! It is a complete violation of the Art. Either learn how to improvise [as I do very poorly] or study to do it better... or play printed music
So Maurice Durufle was vile for transcribing some of Charles Tournemire's brilliant improvisations? Sometimes, pure musical genius occurs and is worth preserving. This is one such instance, the JAV vid of Latry improvising an introit at ND is another. Transcribing a brilliant improvisation for posterity and being able to improvise are not necessarily mutually exclusive...merely a desire to preserve rare magic moments.
I agree completely! Thalben-Ball's 'Elegy' for organ is one of my favourite ever organ pieces, and it started as an improvisation for radio, before it was transcribed due to its popularity.
Or write them down yourself. Can´t be that hard, can it? Her left hand is probably the hardest to write down, but still...It´s a pretty logical improvisation.
indeed, the melody is very clear, and the pedal line can be seen and heard clearly, I would just either harmonise the left hand or watch the couplers to get the notes.

FINALLY one of the great parisian titulaires who improvise something with an actual melody.
i'm so tired of those atonal pieces. just not my cup of tea I guess.
this is a really great piece =)) and Mme Choplin is a very fine lady.

I can't help thinking "Summertime, and the living is easy" for the theme.

The Design of the Swell Box pedal is so much better than your modern pedal that gets in the way of your feet.
The design of the one in St. Sulpice shuts the box completely, the modern swell pedal will leave it slightly open.
