That noise is being made by the fuel injectors, not the pistons. My '95 E300 D had began making the same noise, all I did was replace the fuel injectors and the engine sounded smooth like it used too.

@sweedspeed18 The injection pump is not what is making the ping/purr/rattle ... whatever you want to call it. At least that's the noise I believe Rikardomg17 meant. Other than that, I hear the snap of the injectors opening and closing but I don't hear an injection pump.

@sebq998 it is the injectors, but they arent stuck, theres nothing wrong with them. thats how a mercedes diesel sounds. and camera mics pick up that noise alot worse then what it really is.

@sebq998 less miles, newer engine, or it could just be the quality of the mic for the camera....my 300D is quiet when its cold, but even quieter when its warm. and it gets even quieter when i am running it on corn oil.

Best sound and best car! I'm a proud owner of a w124 200D 1991 with 438.000 km's in it, and it still runs like a dream. I'm also a proud owner of a w124 300D 1991 with 512.000 km's in it. It just runs, runs and runs. In my opinion, no car manufacturer delivers this quality anymore. Pity.... So, one choice remains, which is to keep these beautiful cars up and running! :-)

I have just bought a 1991 300td 7 seat estate which has full 300te spec leather cruise air con sunroof etc etc and i love it. Was only ment to be a stand in while one of my vans was of the road but its great so smooth and comfy and with 246,000miles on her she still runs great. I found a great website where you enter your vin number and it tells you everything about your merc its spec colour codes trim engine etc etc. Great video for a great range of cars.

probably best engine mercedes made overall yes i know their petrols are faster and more powerful and better at performance but for an engine that will probably last my lifetime and carry on going. Its a little diesely at idle but driving its almost as good as most petrols of that era

In 1995 a new engine came out and wasn't available with turbo, just NA. It featured 24 valves.

300D or 300TD they had 6 cilinders while 250D or 250TD had 5 cilinders. There's not an 3.0 liter 5 cilinder engine in this cars. (we're talking just diesels)

Oh and W124 is just the internal code designating that series of middle class Benz's being built from 80something to 96. The four-eyed E-class is called W210, and their successor W212. It doesn't have anything to do with the engine.

Sheesh guys. Take it slowly. OK, that 300D was naturally aspirated, a 5 cylinder engine. In the W124 it was also available as a turbo, but only in the station wagon at first. I am not 100% sure whether the TD was also made available in the sedan, but I think so. This one certainly is na and I think has 95hp. There also was a 250D, which if I am correct also was a 5cyl, and a 200D, which is a 4cyl. The 200D has 73hp.

No the W124 was a turbo Diesel. the E300 diesel of the late 90's was more powerful and NA.
