they are equal in technique yet piano is harder as you tend to play multiple parts throughout both hands dealing more requiremental use of the brain's cordination with other muscles and thought overall. but it is the piece thats the ticker, as one piece can be more difficult than another on any given instrument.
This video is a major reason why I've come to appreciate classical music. The sounds are strange and raw and moving in the way that many modern musicians strive to acheive. Also I like Rubinstein version. Cheers.
I am a violist and a pianist, so I have some idea of the difficulties of both types of playing. Strings are very difficult because of bowings, as well as the difficulties of shifting, fingering etc. However keep in mind that in the piano version of this song the musician is playing about a billion notes at once. The rhythms are insane. Its really, really hard.
They are both crazy tough people! Unless you can play both of them, don't try to say which is harder.
Haha, you don't sound like an idiot. Liszt and Paganini knew each other in real life and Paganini originally wrote the piece. Liszt wrote the famous piano arrangement.
I want to describe this performance with words like 'excruciating' or 'bone-shattering' but it makes me feel so deeply and dreadfully good that I am afraid to be honest. There is a failure in the English language to capture this phenomenon.
@4gs8vh4gs8vh This isn't Liszt,he merely used the melody in his 3rd Etude 4 d piano. This song was originally composed by Paganini as his 3rd movement for his 2nd Violin Concerto in B minor...
@4gs8vh4gs8vh I know this is a little late but Paganini composed this on ONE STRING then Liszt being arrogant, tried to make a piece that only he could play lol
@4gs8vh4gs8vh Liszt was inspired and paid tribute to Paganini, when Liszt was a boy (roughly 12), he saw Paganini perform and was inspired by his skill. This was Paganini's piece way before it was Liszt's. :) The more you know. :P
Piano is black and white salad... (I use to be a pianist, now Im a violinist) Violin is a lot harder to play cause of the position, piano is harder to read cause you have to read 2 pentagram at the same time... and I love both instruments
i dont think you can justify saying ones harder than the other
ive never tried to play, or even seen or heard, anything harder than the piano version of this, but its obviously ridiculously difficult on the violin as well
you can compare such different instruments, its like making a general statement that one instrument is more tricky than other
Ohhh man am I happy that I have tracked the legendary Dubach down!!!! I remember listening to this on a local classical station and have NEVER forgotten his name since! Just beautiful stuff, and incredible talent! Bravo!

@psychobilly16011988 as far as I know, Einstein didn't play any musical instrument, and he still lives. For example, the GPS wouldn't have been possible nowadays without his ecuations of relativity.
Paganini wasnt poisoned by someone he needed some medicine that contained mercury poisoning which made him survive longer. He died of throat cancer. And anyway Paganini tried to buy some more time to live. He had syphillis.
Well Liszt sampled Paganini's work on La Campanella, so that only makes sense.Liszt transcribed Paganini's and wrote it for piano, but I see what you are getting at.
have you ever tried playing paganini on violin?! i'm not saying piano is an easy instrument but you should respect the fact that every instrument has its own difficulty
Actually physically playing the piano offers a lot of difficulties playing the violin does not ( i am a violinist ). But in the case of this piece I would then say you are correct. The piano version is much easier because of well seasoned of a violinist it takes to play this piece as the most difficult thing about this on piano is just the fingering which is nothing.
@cwxzeng piano and violin are so differnt instruments. no one should try to compare them. strings with piano. you cannot talk about merely "difficulty". Mastering an instrument (everyone) requires difficulty. No one can tell which more. It depends also on the person who play that! Uncomparable!
In response to airad2:- I'm a pianist and I'm learning Liszt's arrangement for piano. It's bloody hard and that's no lie. For the violin it looks really easy. But as I don't really have a clue about a violin I'm probably very wrong, and I'm sure I am. I've had the same response from a violinist but the other way round :)
There's no definite answer, but generally speaking, the violin's highest notes are similar to those of the piano. :) Glancing at the sheet music on my stand right now, there's a high A in the intro of Wieniawski's Variations on an Original Theme that is just two whole notes lower than the highest note, C, of a piano. this piece is harder on the violin although there are very tough piano pieces out there. the spiccato and intonation in this piece is extremely difficult to master.

It really depends on it what is more difficult. I have been playing the cello for years and if you want to know how hard it is to play a cello I want to reference to you: search: Feuermann Popper. On the cello you have something called thumb position, a real torture, but a Rachmaninov concert will also be a torture probably.
Well - something about the difficulties of piano and violin:
- ok, you need only 4 fingers for the fingerboard, but you also need your right hand for the bowing technique (and thats as hard as the intonation)
- you need longer to play beautiful tones on the violin
I can't tell what's more difficult. On both instruments you need several years to play harder classical pieces - some players are never able to play Liszt or Paganini!

I play piano, you have 5 notes in each hand you can play. You have to master the dynamics, fingering, the use of the pedal!!
Violins are just playing one note, a piano plays up to ten notes and usually plays alone so you cant hear if it screws up!!

The next note in the piece is a low A, a whole four octaves lower--so the violin can play at least 5 A's. I think there's a high C in the Paganini Concerto #1, same as piano, too.

Actually, both instruments have unmeasurable tecnical difficulties, depeneding on the peice. It all depends on the player, so both of you are noobs.
