A one camera shoot... like a KC teevee station production. Would have been better with multiple cameras and editing, and some choreography. And no music sheets or director. But hey. It's ours. They did their part well.
@radiomankcmo I would love to have been able to record it professionally. As it was, I was kneeling on a wooden bench on the third level, hoping no one around me would start singing or worse, talking :)
I was there about an hour after this and had no clue I even missed it! what a bummer! but it's still impressive to watch. thank you to all who participated! What a blessing!
Awesome! LOL I think that people who get bent over whether it's a "flash mob" or if "random" is used properly need to pull the proverbial stick out of their hind ends and just enjoy the music... that's what it's about.
An interesting bit of performance art, but not a true flash mob. The point at which you get permission to do it, you lose the subversiveness that is part of what defines the flash mob.
@sierrawave: Per Wikipedia, part of the definition of a "flash mob" is that it is an act that is "unexpected or bizarre." It was pretty bizarre to sing the Hallelujah chorus in the middle of a mall food court, and for about half the people in the place, it *was* completely unexpected. It can't be unexpected to the mall security people, or we would have been arrested halfway through the song. The definition says nothing about whether or not you get permission.
Fletcher, Felcher... whether it was a 'true' flash mob or not, I think the main problem was it was too small a space for the number of people who showed up. There were only seats in the food court for about 100 people, so it was hard for 400 people to stand around and look inconspicuous until 2 pm. It took away the element of surprise we would have had if we all could have been sitting around, chatting and looking like we were actually there to boost the economy instead of the shoppers spirits.
kcwohlf...back off. How do you think flash mobs get started?! It does in fact have to be planned. It was magnificent and I happen to know MANY of the people that sang there and I can gaurantee that not one is an idiot. This was a magnificent show of Kansas City getting together for the holidays and cannot wait until next year!
It was random in that most of these people didn't know each other. "Random" can also mean "unpredictable" -- no one knew if anyone would show up, and as it turned out, almost 500 'random' singers did. BTW, none of the singers I met appeared to be idiots.
Well we'll just have to agree to disagree about the definition of a flash mob. I'm unconvinced.

The star said it well "In a flash, a kc mob is singing Hallelujah." And I definitely passed the word to people of colour.
