A great song by Billy Swan! I remember listening to this when it was brand new back in November 1974! I first heard "I Can Help" on WHBF AM 1270 in Rock Island, IL. Dan Hibbs was a popular local DJ at the time. WHBF-AM was a Top 40 station at the time. In late 1974, they would play songs like "I Can Help" & "Angie Baby" by Helen Reddy quite regularly - to death, in fact! I don't remember them playing "Kung Fu Fighting" by Carl Douglas, though. It was too uptempo & quirky to suit HBF's taste.
@ChihuahuaboyDH KSTT-AM, another local Top 40 staition out of Davenport, IA, would play more quirky, rock-oriented songs in their rotation. They would play "Kung Fu Fighting" regularly. WHBF-AM changed their format to country in 1975, billing themselves as "Country Sunshine WHBF AM 1270". WHBF changed its call letters in 1987 & continued to be a country music station & underwent another change in the 1990s. KSTT later changed its format & call letters & became a sports talk station - KJOC AM.
I also couldn't believe my ears when I heard this in 'Thor'. I'm 22 years old and my parents used to play it so much when I was really little and I hadn't heard it in years(since roughly the age of 10).
Just goes to show that real music is not always forgotten. And the film was also brilliant too :)
Who has skated to this song?? Especially, who has skated tothis song in a rink in a TENT!!??? lol good OLD days..... I can hardly listen to it without makin sure i am taking the corners with overlapping footwork lol
LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE IT!!! Don't hear words like that anymore and man, this IS timely in my world. I remember Swan and that song, but had to be reminded by a friend in FB...WOWOWOWO Knocks me out...sooo cool Thnx
Strangest thing happened to me with this old song a few months back. Out of the blue I started playing it on guitar and singing it. Hadn't heard it in YEARS! A few days later I went to see Thor and couldn't believe it when I heard it in the movie.
Geez @Tom...is it that time of month already? Don't be so thin-skinned. First of all..."Thor" is a sad attempt at bringing the Marvel character to the big screen....don't know anyone who would disagree with that. Secondly, the quotes are to signify the genre of the movie....sorry if that offends you.
And last but not least, if you take my saying I was glad to have been there when it was first released as "Holier than thou" just don't know what to tell you other than get a life dude.
@kthinsa Let us count the ways in which you're a douche.
1.) You put superhero in quotes.
2.) You have some holier than thou attitude about having heard this song 'first'. Yeah, OK, you've been enjoying Billy Swan for years. Who gives a shit if somebody is exposed to his music through the movie Thor?
So at least two ways in which you're a dick, which is considered probable cause towards even more.
I grew up loving this song. Brilliant. I heard it in the movie Thor, tonight, and I about shit myself. I expect there will be a TON of young users (like myself) coming in and commenting about finding this song in Thor. Which is good! This song deserves the recognition!
@Ironman374 me too..when i was a kid i used to wake up get the little record player running 45s and play this to my parents while they were laying in bed..like a dj..brings back good memories and i loved this song.!
@208stroker1 Yep. It's remained a favorite of mine my entire life. I grew up during a time where Cassette tapes were going out of style and CDs were the up and coming thing, but I've actually been more familiar with vinyls and record players. I've borrowed countless vinyls from my Dad as a kid and played so many albums. It's always been my favorite way to listen to music.
I like everything about this song, especially the unique sound of the organ. When it first came out (1974), I was listening to a station that mixed oldies with current songs, and I thought it was an oldie until I started hearing it every day. The guitar intro would make a great cell phone ring tone. Thanks for including the encores at the end, I only heard them a couple of times 30 years ago.
I remember I was making some crafts when this song was popular . . . and it always was one that was 'catchy' and that I had to sing along with! Great song ;-) ~Diana Lynn~
Forever thissong is my reminder of the Belgian Secret Police.
As soon they overheard I was helping a woman-friend who's husband hanged himself andshe was totally out-of-everything , they did not know anything worse than sending a helicopter and the forces around her house.
HELL!
Kill it hard !
But not too hard ,they might like it...as you might know.
I remember when this song came out! I was eight years old in 1974. I was in the third grade. I would hang out regularly @ the local skating rink. I must admit I was a terrible skater! They don't make music like this anymore!
@ChihuahuaboyDH We must be doubles in parrallel universes - what a trip! same age and same experiences and I still like this song all of these years later.
The other day, I told my husband that I wanted to hear those three little words I haven't heard in a long time. He said, "Honey, you know I love you." I said, "No, no, not that. The three words I'm longing to hear are "Need some help?"
Oh for crying out loud - I just got it. "It would do me good - to do you good". Well I got this album when I was 11 year old!! (or do I just have dirty mind?)
What a song!!! , still has the original on a vinyl LP. Still the best version, not to say that Elvis' version is not good - more up tempo..But ol' Billy mag maar!
@pucksterz12 A lot of people thought that Ringo did this at the time! I wonder sometimes if Ringo has any regrets about not covering this then. You are right, tailor-made for him!
This is one very likable, singalongable tune, simple, perhaps, but deceptively so,and produced with a lot of flair Flair? Well, the in & out "fade out",as the song comes to a close, was a master stroke,I reckon, demonstrating once again that clever songs deceive the listener by sounding plain or simple....Great "stuff"!!!
Used to skate to this....man, I love this song.
