@crucko1 Tyson was not in his prime when he fought Buster Douglas. The minute Tyson dissmissed Kevin Rooney, that was the begining of his slide down hill. Out went the lateral movement and the rapid fire combinations. I think Lewis is a gentleman, but I never thought much of him as a fighter
Lewis and Tyson are the same age, Lewis is actually older, they were both past their prime. Lewis was by far the superior technical fighter. Tyson had one punch, without it he was useless. I watched that fight in a room full of Tyson supporters, all wanted to bet with me. I couldn't take the bets because Mike can knock anyone out with one punch, but that doesn't make him the better fighter. Remember, Tyson gave up his belt to avoid fighting Lewis, and King paid LL 300k tribute for doing so.

Tyson was very feared but never had techique, he´s not used to his opponents last more than 2 rounds, once a fighter figured out to last more than 2 rounds he had a chance on beating Tyson added to this, Lennox Lewis is a great fighter so..

Back in his hay day he was an aggressive knockout artist who had great bob and weave skills to get inside and be able to land those bombs. I know he didnt fight many great fighters in his prime but watch how graceful he could be working his way in slipping and countering. That my friend is great technique.

Mike knew Lennox was too strong and good for him and he said so after they finally fought. The same was true when they sparred. Lewis was Riddick Bowe's WBC No.1 contender, but at the same time he brought nothing to the table for Bowe to fight him. Lewis only had a Euopean title, and Bowe was undisputed champ. At the time, Bowe was in negotiations to fight George Foreman for $20m + in China, and also had an offer (which he later accepted) for $22m to fight Evander Holyfield in a rematch. It's my life, my father was a pro, I was a pro.. Mma looks more complex, because they use ground work and stand up. But I know their striking technique is no way near the level of pro boxers. Most mma guys admid to that. As far as the ground work goes, there are many guys who master essential techniques very fast. Boxing takes decades to master, trhe bobbing and weaving, the punches, the footwork the defense requires perfect timing, coordination and explosive mussles. Most guys can't do it.

I realy don't care much about that discussion. Boxing is a olympic olympic discipline, a box office sport. My point was that the level of professionalism is much higher in boxing and it's much harder to reach the top.

Lewis and Tyson are the same age, Lewis is actually older, they were both past their prime. Lewis was by far the superior technical fighter. Tyson had one punch, without it he was useless. I watched that fight in a room full of Tyson supporters, all wanted to bet with me. I couldn't take the bets because Mike can knock anyone out with one punch, but that doesn't make him the better fighter. Remember, Tyson gave up his belt to avoid fighting Lewis, and King paid LL 300k tribute for doing so.

Lewis was Riddick Bowe's WBC No.1 contender, but at the same time he brought nothing to the table for Bowe to fight him. Lewis only had a Euopean title, and Bowe was undisputed champ. At the time, Bowe was in negotiations to fight George Foreman for $20m + in China, and also had an offer (which he later accepted) for $22m to fight Evander Holyfield in a rematch. Bowe was only offered $8m to fight Lewis, so like most boxers he was simply taking the biggest offer, an extra $14m! not ducking Lewis

Tyson was the bad man of the heavyweight era. He was an ANIMAL. One of the most entertaining and vicious heavyweights of all time.
Lewis was, and always will be, remembered as the better boxer.
It's one thing to like a man, its another to be deluded to the point logic evades you. Tyson was never on Lennoxes level as a boxer. Lennox was the superior in any ring. Outside of the ring its a different story.

Then maybe you are not a true boxing fan. Tyson was spectacular knock outs, indeed like you see in mma. Boixng is a test of skill, tactics, mental and physical power, endurance. It's the drama, the romance, men who go 12 rounds, untill the last second either man can win.
Mma is mostly over before you blink. Sorry to say this but, in many times a bunch of white trash trowing wild punches untill a lucky punch hits a glace jaw and it"s over. The groundwork mostly isn't estetic either.

It's my life, my father was a pro, I was a pro.. Mma looks more complex, because they use ground work and stand up. But I know their striking technique is no way near the level of pro boxers. Most mma guys admid to that. As far as the ground work goes, there are many guys who master essential techniques very fast. Boxing takes decades to master, trhe bobbing and weaving, the punches, the footwork the defense requires perfect timing, coordination and explosive mussles. Most guys can't do it.

I realy don't care much about that discussion. Boxing is a olympic olympic discipline, a box office sport. My point was that the level of professionalism is much higher in boxing and it's much harder to reach the top.
I saw plenty streetfights, suckerpunching, dirtyfighting, 3 against one, kicking in the balls. Who wins is often based on who it most dirty and most lucky. It's got nothing to do with mma Offcourse good punching always comes to hand, the punch is fastes way to shut the brain down.

It was only "sad" because Mike made them look that bad. Lennox Lewis mopped up just as sad of a division if you want to go there. Ali is a great/kind and humble man - I truly doubt he believes Tyson is the greatest fighter who ever lived. Tyson has had many times in his life where he needed people to give him emotional support. I'm sure Ali's comment had more to do with that than his real feelings as to Tyson's boxing abilities. some fighters were meant to be shooting stars.The progression that tyson made from berbick to the spinks fight was astonishing.He beat Tony Tucker who 4 months prior KO'd a fit douglas so mike was a different fighter in august 1987 then he was in feb 1990.Had the feb 1990 version of tyson face tony tucker,tucker would also beat mike so you can't hold his career against him because of his severe bipolar,disorders and party life style after 1988.

Yes in fact I CAN hold his career against him...and that is ALL that I hold against him...I don't care about his exploits outside of the ring-he is an athlete, and athletes are judged by what they DO inside the ring-not on what they MIGHT have done if only.....You accuratly point out that Tyson had a brief but bright prime (about two years)where he beat some decent competition, but those accopmplishments don't compare with Lewis, Holyfield or Holmes before him. He remains over-rated.

Doesn't compete with Holyfield? That just proves your ignorance. Holyfield's record as a heavyweight is 24-9-2. That includes a draw against Lennox which was a loss, a win against Rahman which was caused by his head, and garbage decisions against Oquendo and Ruiz, so if you want to be serious about his record it is really 21-13-1.Holyfield is by far the most overrated heavyweight ever. And I don't know where you get that he ducked Holyfield...they were set to fight before he went to prison.

Tyson beat up a lot of old '80's retreads(Tubbs, Berbeck, Smith, Williams, Thomas, Holmes, ect) during his 'so-called prime' of 1986-88. He NEVER beat ANY top fighter from HIS generation (Bowe, Lewis, Holyfield, Mercer, Moorer). Tyson was very effective at beating up used up old men, but he couldn't compete with top young contenders.

Who did it better? Foreman, Liston and Hearns were at least as good in the KO department. Tyson knocked out opponents in a terrifying way, but those other three guys could pile up bodies like no one else in boxing history. Too close to call, like four angels of death.
