The Sacrificial Pit of Shu always kinda creeped me out a bit. The endless stream of ghost maiden things hurling themselves into a beds of spikes, with 8 bit bloody splashes. Best of it is at the top because of their expressions as they take the plunge. Not scary, but the music of the Confusion Gate does set a good eerie atmosphere.

To open that door, you need to take out the boss of the guardian gate, the 2-headed snake. While it might not have seemed like it, most of the guardians you kill do open up those doorways between the front and back areas. As a little advance tip, you are gonna need to kill bahumat open the passageway between the tower of ruin and the inferno cavern, which allows you to later reach Viy, which needs to be killed to open the path to the tower of the goddess
