  • Not even a flora is safe from Hedge-mo! xD

  • I swear this was on TV or too ten best animations or something somewhere. I feel like ive seen it before

  • I thought I commented on this video before, but couldn't find it.

Anyway, this is a gem in the sea of crap on YouTube. I come back to it very few months or so, because it is that awesome. Never gets old.

  • Great video keep up the good work.

  • Anybody else think Gork sounds like Zordon??

  • Klaatu Barada Nikto... Oh wait, wrong Sci-Fi.

  • This is the best thing in the universe ever.

  • @Yesitis808 Hello, thanks for you comment. You guys are inspiring me to make new things. I'm so glad people can see my hard work of passion and enjoy it so many years later. I'm getting soooo close to directing a 3D animated feature. If it ever actually happens.. you guys will be the first to know. Thanks again.

  • @johnTwisted Wow. any updates?

  • this is so good! would love to see behind the scenes footage. especially since i'm a bit clueless as to the 3D stuff you're talking about.

  • 1:27 The dude sounds like a Canadian from South Park. BTW this is great.

  • This is great! would love to see this picked up again!

  • What's the frame rate? Thanks in advance.

  • Cool !, nice illustrations, good animation.... good job

    ZOXTAR.COM The SciFi images Stock

  • Starship decorators?

  • This wins at life.

  • Wasn't Gork the name of that gray alien on Dexter's Laboratory? It was the episode where Dexter was held prisoner on an alien world and Dee Dee had to go save him.

  • I'm trippin balls

  • what're some of the programmes or software that can allow me to rotoscope properly ? i mean i really suck at using the pencil or pen tool at flash, and i can't use a tablet...so PLEASE HELP !

  • Love the Art & Animation Cool2Def..

  • i would love to see a feature film of this, i love your style!

  • OK, I admit that at first I thought it was stupid. But one part I found really funny.

    1:55 - 2:07

    *bash* *bash* *bash*

"I thought I told you to fix this[Insert name]!"

    "I did!"

"Well it's not working now! See?!"

    *bash* *bash* *bash*

    "Your breaking it!"

I've watched just that at least 10X now an I'm still laughing! XD

Yeah, I think this would fit right in on adult swim.

  • Amazing, amazing work. I think I've watched this like 100x. Think I'll watch it again -

  • GREAT!!!

  • Absolutely beautiful, TRUE rotoscoping. It can either be done as the most beautiful animation (by hand), or the ugliest animation (digitally). I weep for this lost art form.

  • this is genius! if only it was a TV series XD

  • 1:51 to 1:55 hahaahahahahahahahaha

  • Very cool. Have you been able to emulate this using today's technology and software?

In other words, if you were to revive GORK (which would be excellent) how would you go about creating new sequences without sacrificing the original feel of this piece?

  • @codycoppin

I think so, yes. I really haven't investigated how I would do it at this point, but I'm more than certain you could. I was doing some tests with painter 10, but I think a program like toon boom might be better. I'll have to investigate further, but the wacom tablet pretty much allows the same kind of freedom with the lines that I had on the original. I've added more notes to the info about how i kept the look consistent.

  • Fucking Hell...that is just bloody awsome, should be on Adult Swim with a Quasimoto or Madvillian beat. Would love hear about any plans you have to turn it into a series. Feels a bit like if Jarmusch did sci fi hahah!!!

  • Not "simply brilliant", but brilliant!

very happy to see early creative footage like this, props m8

    I also spotted a iPhone/app for superheros on the control panel @ (1:17) = iHQ ;)

  • awesome!! Im loving the colours!!

  • PUSH IT, DON'T SMASH IT!!!

Ha... this is a great video and example of some experimental animation. It's very inspiring! What are you doing these days?

  • Thanks for the comment. Currently I'm the Visual Effects Supervisor on an ABC tv show called MY GENERATION. Due to air Sept 23rd.

  • FABULOUS, absolutely fabulous

  • OMG! I commented on this 3 years ago! Well I've done a lot of animation since then and I come back to this and STILL say MUCh respect! Please tell me you're doing something with this or LIKE this. Don't let haters or anyone else, not even real life, stop you! Just animate something! You rock!!

  • @realteruchan i agree, i come back here now because its not CGI, its not a corporation and i happen to like home made chocolate chip cookies!

  • haha. this is awesome. the best part is when they get tacos.

  • You did it the Old School Way, very nice.

  • Dude, this is awesome.

  • I LIKED YOUR WORK MAN... THIS YOURS THIS IS SOMETHING YOU HAD CREATED IN EARLIER YEARS BUT REGARDLESS OF WHAT OTHERS FEEL ABOUT IT.... THIS IS NO WAY DISRESPECTFUL TO ANY1 ONES RELIGION CULTURE AND RACE

  • I truly love this. I've had a go at rotoscoping myself, but not to this standard and especially not as challenging. Many of the modern programs etc. start to make this stuff to do a bit easy, but the way you did this, one would have a tough time achieving even with today's technology!

    Seriously, well done, it's great!

  • I thought the hologram guy was hilarious!!! I tried out for Cal Arts but the amount of money they want a year is daunting. I think this is awesome though!

  • excellent work!!! ....don't bother responding to haters.... did you make your downshooter camera or was it supplied at school?.... gonna gonna try to rig my bolex with a lamp... keep at it man love to see some more work.

  • you sir have some amazing talent! I can't believe a single person can create such a masterpiece on his own! great work!

  • I just randomly found this and I have to say that was really quite random, I didn't really know what to think at first but this was a quite funky rotoscope, old school

I found this because I was looking for examples of combining Maya and rotoscoping, I bet CalArts was a great place to study, it seems like a lot of people who go there do really well.

  • Like it.

  • wow this was very impressive.. more!

  • This is freaking awesome. It's nice to see an unconventional use of rotoscoping again. it reminds me a lot of ralph bakshi

  • my god this is so amazing. impressive and inspiring. I'm so glad that you include info about the process, too.

  • this was fuckin AWESOME!! Very impressive, great informative back story you got in the "more info" too! The colors are kick ass, this should have aired on Liquid Television!!

I can totally understand the time it takes to do this, I just completed a rotoscoping animation that took a whole year to finalize...it's my latest upload right now, I highly encourage evry one who dug GORK to check mine out, I'd love to hear what some viewers thought!!

    -mr.oz

  • Great video, there is some atmosphere of Phillip K. Dick to it.

  • @GrandMotherFather no there isn't you stupid douche-nozzle

  • ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC. I hope you are doing this for a living, because I loved it.

  • I love this vid, It's been one of my favorites for years

  • Very cool!

  • Great short, this reminds me of Heavy Metal. You should make a web series out of this! You just need to add maybe a chick and a robot.

    ;D

  • absolutely awesome....

  • dude it rocks!!!!!! Especially that men with white smoke on his head. great

  • maybe better than heavy metal, man thats kick ass, hope u made ur life in animation field...

  • dude this is so bad ass

  • sexy Jesus coming in for a bite and a kill!!!! lol awesome!! I'm gonna try one of these . Trippy cool!

  • great job, i'm starting a new sci-fi rotoscope movie myself using some digital technologies,

i' m very glad to see this stuff!

  • wow great job! do you know where i can get a downshooter camera setup? really cool....... also, youtube wouldnt be youtube without all the haters... pay em no mind.

  • cool

  • It was Steve, he told me he had it in for you

  • Great Job ! hope you got a good grade.

  • Super cool! Loved it, beautiful animation!

  • Love it! Thanks for posting!

  • Holy crap! this is AMAZING! THIS MADE MY FACE CURL INTO A PERMANENT SMILE! the voice overs are awesome, the sound effects are awesome, the visuals are awesome, and hedgemo, issssssssss awesome!!!

  • SOOOOoooooo much tastier than CG - Hands down!! Old school rules!

  • This video NEEDS more views. I must have watched this at least 50 times now.

I have to say, it's probably the most inspiring work Ive come across on YouTube.

    "Jack, watch'it Jack!"

  • evileaub, i keep doing coming back myself!!!

  • Thanks! I hope I can get new episodes made one day. Spread the word.

  • this is fucking awesome. kind of reminds me of HEAVY METAL which I hope you think is a compliment - it's one of my favourite movies. and I'd totally see GORK!

BTW I think the yellow guy sounds like Terrance and Phillip!

  • Excellent shit dude, vintage, original, looks 70's... rotten sick and twisted. I LIIIIKKEE

  • Love it

  • This is wonderful, I've loved this style ever since seeing a couple Bakshi films as a kid.

  • dude absolutely stunning! amazing work! musta taken a littl ebit of tume back in the 80's! lol

  • Amazing.

  • I loved this - I do hope you can managed to create more - I love this sort of humour. :)

  • Comment removed

  • This is the most awesome thing I have seen anywhere in a long time. Its very funny and quirky. I have watched it about 10 times in one year and it never gets old. There are so many funny things packed into this it's unbelievable. Gork Lives!

  • Thanks so much.. Please share with a friend. Let's get more views and feedback. Maybe I can get this thing produced.

  • "Not even the flora is safe from Hedgemo!" Hysterical!!!

  • reminds me of bakshi films...

  • omg i keep coming back to this video. its is AMAZING!

steamrolln...you REALLY have something here, all the elements fit in nicely. me and my friends in LA would host a "strange video night" this would be perfect for it.

  • Thanks for the repeated visits. Glad you like it. Share the video and lets get this thing seen by the world. I'll get it produced some day I hope.

  • This rules on SO many levels!

    "You're breaking it!" "I don't care!!!"

  • very well done, I would really like to see how you made this. old school rotoscoping is intense

  • BRILLIANT! :)

  • make a tshirt, on the front it says gork but on the back it says;

    "push it,, dont smash it!"

  • strangequirkyawesome!

  • THis looks awesome.

  • What's the background music/soundtrack? I love the campy, quirkiness of it. Perfect for a low-budget sci-fi film.

  • Haha, random and funny. I like Hedgmo! If you have time, please make a series of this!

  • sweet

  • Does Jack make it?

  • cool cool cool... did some old school roto myself recently... frame by frame... less fps and much shorter but I know the struggle...

  • Excellent work!

  • awesome, awesome!

  • great vid buddy. silly music.

  • yeah. . .put up the making of gork

  • I'd like to see how you made this! very cool and so worth the effort you put in! Awesome!

  • This is fucking BEAUTIFUL!

  • Michael freaking Patterson? You lucky dawg! Great animation by the way; reminds me of the 80's cheese that I wasn't alive to even experience.

  • for some reason this makes me think of tron

  • this is genuise i love this animationn

  • how many frames per second is this?

  • the movie is 24fps, but the animation was done on 1s and 2s. When there was talking I roto'd on 2s (every other frame). When there is fast movement I roto'd 1s (every frame)

  • damn funny stuff :)

  • oh man! this is fun and bonkers! so much good energy and kookie characters!

  • Very nice!

  • Great job, that was space ace!

  • I've done a little rotoscoping (in After Effects, not old school style) and that was time consuming. I can't imagine the hours spent on this. Beautiful work!

  • Massive untold hours.. I like to tell people to watch that movie "The Mission" with Robert Dinero where he lugs this suit of armor up the mountain. That's what it felt like to complete this film. I was left to do it by myself. Abandoned by my friends who were too board of painting. I was on a mission. 4 years to complete the whole production. Most of that was painting.

  • what did he say? bean poke leaves his scent? haha anyway, that was bloody funny

  • yes, "Peanpoke leaves his scent." I can't remember how I came up with that name, but it was a nickname I game my friend. He used to call me Bellbock.

  • HELL YEAH!!! AWESOME!!!

  • Lol, is Gork retarded or something?

  • FUNNY, NICE! lol

  • The repairing the ship part was hilarious! Good job.

  • very cool, man! well done!

  • Great Job. I´ve never seen something so amazing since Flash Gordon

  • ffflaaaaaaaaaash

  • super, love the backgroundstory in your comment

    you still animating a lot?

    cheers

    W

  • Wow! Really well done!

  • Awesome.

  • YEAR OF THE FISH is an entire movie in rotoscoping!

    trailer here: yearofthefish [dot] com

i really love the painterly, otherworldly, fantasy effect...

  • Yeah, but rotoscope is only cool when done in pen.

  • So damned good Work!!!! 5 stars

  • good

  • Thoroughly enjoyed the style, not to mention the retro feel of the movie. Hope you can get someone take this seriously.

  • This is amazing my friend. One of the coolest things I've ever found on Youtube. I'm working on my own little rotoscope piece and I'll hit you up for an opinion when it's ready.

  • Not even the flora is safe from Hedgemo...

    That was outstanding! Thanks

  • kicks ass

  • I thought for sure that you had made this with Photoshop and After effects... until I read the description.

  • Thanks. Yeah it's major old school. I drew each image with a sharpie on a clear cel then hand painted every frame. I had no choice back then. Photoshop and After Effects hadn't even been invented yet. hehe. I feel old. I'll never do it that way again. Todays computers would make it much!!!! easier. Maybe I'll do another episode.

  • Yes, please make another episode. I could watch an hour of this. Get some student interns.

  • I want more GORK, set a course for the GORKALATIC system

  • this has a really wierd feel to it that definately enhances the whole thing, like a cross between dune and tron, but kind of better. top stuff. favourited 5s

  • Just needs to be refined a little bit more, but otherwise great concept, technique and looks like it has potential.

  • heavy metal style - good job

  • this is arsekicking

  • woa this is wierd..in a good way though. :D

    gj

  • CALLOUSMAN.

  • yes I would like to see more of this.

  • nice work~

  • amazing

  • Ralph Bakshi would be proud!

  • gORk! gORk! Gork rocks.

If only George Lucas had been influenced by this.

Things would have been..o so much more..different.

  • I'd just like to say that I love every single aspect of this film. Well done.

  • Hehe.. So glad you like it. Thanks so much for your comment. Tell a friend. Lets get this thing made!

  • What you gotta do is pitch it to Adult Swim or something. This is zany enough to be up their alley.

And by "their," I suppose I mean "the people at Adult Swim."

    Vagueness reigns supreme.

  • I've spoken to them years ago, but perhaps I'll look into it again. Thanks for the suggestion.

  • Awesome short. Beautiful work, especially for being done in the 80's.

  • I love it, has a real Heavy Metal/2000 AD feel to it.

I think rotoscoped ships or some sorta cel shading technique would work better on the cg stuff.

  • so fucking cool, mate !!!!

wish to do something like this soon !!!

  • this is sick :))

  • Awesome!

  • wow. this is insane.

  • wow. this is insane.

  • this is awesome dude. just the fact that you went to calarts made me expect that it was gonna be great quality. my expectations were met!!! i hope one day you make it into a series and some network gives it a shot

  • Hey Thanks. I really think it will get made one day. I'm working on several other projects that I think will lead to Gork. You're comments inspire me to keep on trying. :-)

  • oh my god.

why isn't all animation done like this!

  • stylishh

  • gork is great! i would buy an episode of this easily!

  • this is awesome. rotoscope is undervalued, pulled off brilliantly here

  • If you plan on doing anything with this I'd love to grip or act in it, anything to help this greatness out man!

  • Thanks for the props. I certainly plan to try. I wish I could get this on the home page. That might really spike interest. Who knows what could happen.

  • how long did this take ?

    its well good

    bit weird but good

  • This took me 4 years to create. Mainly because It's all hand painted and I didn't have much help painting.

  • This is good. It's rare to see rotoscoping that works with the film. Maybe you could sell this as a film or series, no easy task I know, but I could imagine this as having some sort of following.

  • Thanks for the comment. Yes it's very difficult to actually get something on TV or film, but i'm hopefull. I think I need to get over 100,000 views before someone will take me seriously. I'm so happy that i've almost got 10,000. But it's nothing compared to many of the popular videos. It would be cool if the public could pick the ideas they wanted to see made into a series. It would give sweeps week a whole new meaning.

  • im either way too stoned, or this is the funniest thing ive ever seen in my entire life.i love the acting!

  • great work, nice style - reminds me of a-ha's take on me video in 1984 - i guess it was in vogue at the time.

  • No, not really in vogue in the 80's, the Ah-Ha Video was pretty much it. Actually more in vogue now with the flash rotoscoping comercials and that movie "A Scanner Darkly". Even Wired magazine had a roto cover recently from the film maker. I wish it had been in vogue, I would have gotten more work.

  • Pretty darn awesome! Hope we might get to see more of it in the future.

  • You really know how to utilise rotoscoping, this is excellent, great designs and acting, funny too.

  • Thanks, I hope I get to make another episode one day.
