I never saw this film but I read the book only in the novelization this scene is played out quite differently.

Fairly well done, lots more scenes appeared that couldn't have made it in the film due to budget and time constraints.

Like this particular scene, in the book it triggers a chapter long flashback sequence. Of course they couldn't afford to film in the actual Himalayas but it was clear that was what the writers intended.

However they actually had to make a correction as by this time Tibet was under Chinese control, the Dalai Lama had fled to India but they set it in Nepal as a compromise.
