The man in the video who killed the deputy should have been shot after he was issued four verbal commands to drop his weapon. If you are asked three different times to drop your weapon and step away from your vehicle you pose an imminent threat and therefore should be dealt with as such.

You need to do some research. NO handgun is a guaranteed stopper and, by far, the most important factor is shot placement. This is a fact. A shot to a non-vital area with a .45 caliber will have the same effect as a shot to the same area with a .380, or any other handgun caliber.

This is why its essential to practice moving and shooting at targets that also move. In how many firefights is the target going to stay still at certain distance? not many. If you are a shooting enthusiatist try practicing with your friends, take bb pistols or paintball guns and try to simulate real fight (remember to wear helemts etc). Keeping calm is extremely important.

First off, I'm no expert. But I have heard stories from people who served in the military and they mentioned how even people that had been hit in the stomach or hip region with rifles were frequently able to still move and weren't always "stopped" by the round. They were able to get to cover or still return fire. I have also seen ballistic info that shows the 9mm in certain forms to be as powerful as the 45. That said I think that both can do the job but neither are a guaranteed stopper.
@gotmatt2 Military and LEO are apples and oranges. Military unit cannot use hollow point ammunition, LEO's can. This makes a huge difference. Paul Howe talks alot about this fact in reference to the Blackhawk down incident. He was shooting somolies 5&6 times with the 855 rounds and the bullets would zip right throught bodies and they would just keep fighting back

I've seen interviews of serbian special forces in kosovo where they faced drugged up mujis on adrenaline shots or cocaine. They could take 5-6 rounds and not even know they were shot. They would continue to shoot and advance at the position. Later the handed out some thompsons left overs from ww2. At 50m 2-3 thompson rounds drops them like bags.

You sir, are a moron. You were very correct in saying that you don't know much about the .45 ACP. Terminal ballistics is based on shot placement. The caliber which you shoot, unless you are talking about upgrading your firepower to a rifle cartridge, has very little to do with it. With regard to calibers that are typically carried for defensive purposes, 9mm is a fine choice. Modern bullet technology has made a significant difference in the terminal performance of 9mm bullets.
@APDECHO2 We do not know what round the deputy used here. 9mm parabellum FMJ has more penetrating power to .45 ACP. Where 45 stops 9mm will penetrate. Futhermore there are also 9mm hollow point rounds that have similar expansion to 45 acp. We dont know what round officer was fireing at this lunatic, or if he hit or just grazed him.
I've watched, Russian Specnaz training videos, and one thing they do is shoot live rounds at each other, beat eachother, endure burtal training, all in effort to become desentisised to violence and think clearly in situation where the "reptile" part of your human brain takes over and that is survival. I'am not saying that police should have same brutal training as those guys but i can see why its necessary. In hand to hand combat, point blank you need to act.
I've seen the video, the golden rule "if in doubt, shoot" was not followed. This guy with M1 was the real thing, get how calm he is during shooting he was no stranger to killing before... I think it's a good suggestion, possibly, that the .45 would have brought the suspect down. That said, it seems to me that the point is irrelevent, since the officer didn't land any good kill shots with his 9mm. Essentially, if he wasn't landing good shots with 18+ rounds of 9mm, I wouldn't trust him to hit with a .45 either. I'd take the .45 over the 9mm any day in a firefight, but neither will save you from poor choices. RIP.
I can guarantee you that the 9mm was a better choice. The .45 doesn't do more damage - The kickback of a handgun is completely neglible. The .45 wouldn't have done anything the 9mm has done. Hits to the stomach just don't do anything when you're operating and the handgun energy level. However: In a battle where cars are being used, the .45 bounces off a car door while the 9mm goes right through. Therefore, using a 45, the deputy would have been at an even bigger tactical disadvantage.

Most cops use 9mm and 40. Almost none carry a 45 of any make. Lot of people try to say a 9 will do just asmuch damage due to higher velocity. This is proven bull though cause if is was true the 223 would be one of the most devistating rounds. Its not just speed that does it. Its mass+velocity. You hit someone with a hollow point 45 and a hollow 9mm, watch which goes deeper and does more damage. Its like saying a volkswagon will do just asmuch damage as a semi.

Any edge that a .45 has over a 9mm is more than compensated for by modern bullet design of 9mm hollow points and a higher capacity in the firearm, period. A different gun would not have saved this man, not at that range and with the bad guy wielding a long gun.
@ChrisPenta I did not say kill shot but the 45 more times than not will slow a threat down enough to put another shot on target. However in this case with the perps reaction to whatever he was shot with i think only a Rifle or shotgun would have ended the threat. We can only speculate all day.
@jrose2020 I don't know where people get the idea that a 45 is some sort of death ray or superweapon. Compared to the 9mm ammunition that cops carry, you would find no difference in one shot stop or slowdown of the target.
@ChrisPenta I don't know man, I've done field tests on hornadys .45 critical defense loads and I get perfect expansion and penetration through various different clothing types and ballistics gels. Expansion to .86 is about the average. 2 of those anywhere center mass or 1 to the face is going to end the attack right now. JHP when fired thru clothing more times than not just ends up acting hardball and does minimal damage in my opinion.

Officers in any other situation not involving a firearm, usually are required by their department to try using a taser or a asp to detain or disarm a subject if possible, obviously that was not an option. He would still be alive today and the perp would have received his well-deserved death.

Im a range guy and one sunny Sunday I been shooting with my old Beretta 92 (9mm) to a human metal figure black painted in the range, the 92 is very accurate and easily can group the shoots like white dots on the target and after a few mags I switched to my friend Colt 45 and making more bigger dots in the target and making the rust blow from the back of the metal figure in the air like a spray, so was easy to understand the .45 hit way more harder the targets and more stop power.

I am a former N.C. State Trooper and I know of this case due to training classes, and the only thing I can say is the officer did wait but he was slapped with P.B. charge already. If these bleeding heart libs will shut up when we have to deal with animals this would not happen. It makes a officer second guess his training. i watched the video and as a former law enforcement officer I had more questions than answers. I wondered why the Deputy didn't tase the man, I wondered why the Deputy didn't shoot the man before he was able to shoot the Deputy, I wondered why backup wasn't there quicker, and I wondered why when the man charged the Deputy the first time, he didn't put the guy on the ground and cuff him. Like I said, I had more questions then answers.
@rhv201 I work for a L.E agency. let me try to answer a few of your questions. Most cops don't have teasers. Sadly a lot of officers are not willing to use physical force or deadly physical force. I feel that these kind of officers should not be on the job. A single man patrol car can cover a large area. so it would commonly take a long time for back up to show up. putting him in cuffs would have been would have been a dangerous situation as well. i agree with 155Millimeter @ 4min mark

Not to be either way in calibers, But The Officer probally had Hollowpoint bullits, That heavy jacket could have diverted the round or slowed it down, he wasnt hit hard, I so wish the Cop would have closed the distance in this case.

You need to do some research. NO handgun is a guaranteed stopper and, by far, the most important factor is shot placement. This is a fact. A shot to a non-vital area with a .45 caliber will have the same effect as a shot to the same area with a .380, or any other handgun caliber.

This is why its essential to practice moving and shooting at targets that also move. In how many firefights is the target going to stay still at certain distance? not many. If you are a shooting enthusiatist try practicing with your friends, take bb pistols or paintball guns and try to simulate real fight (remember to wear helemts etc). First off, I'm no expert. But I have heard stories from people who served in the military and they mentioned how even people that had been hit in the stomach or hip region with rifles were frequently able to still move and weren't always "stopped" by the round. They were able to get to cover or still return fire. I have also seen ballistic info that shows the 9mm in certain forms to be as powerful as the 45. That said I think that both can do the job but neither are a guaranteed stopper.

Paul Howe talks alot about this fact in reference to the Blackhawk down incident. The caliber which you shoot, unless you are talking about upgrading your firepower to a rifle cartridge, has very little to do with it. With regard to calibers that are typically carried for defensive purposes, 9mm is a fine choice. Modern bullet technology has made a significant difference in the terminal performance of 9mm bullets.

I've watched, Russian Specnaz training videos, and one thing they do is shoot live rounds at each other, beat eachother, endure burtal training, all in effort to become desentisised to violence and think clearly in situation where the "reptile" part of your human brain takes over and that is survival. I think it's a good suggestion, possibly, that the .45 would have brought the suspect down. That said, it seems to me that the point is irrelevent, since the officer didn't land any good kill shots with his 9mm. Essentially, if he wasn't landing good shots with 18+ rounds of 9mm, I wouldn't trust him to hit with a .45 either. I can guarantee you that the 9mm was a better choice. The .45 doesn't do more damage - The kickback of a handgun is completely neglible. The .45 wouldn't have done anything the 9mm has done. Hits to the stomach just don't do anything when you're operating and the handgun energy level. However: In a battle where cars are being used, the .45 bounces off a car door while the 9mm goes right through. Therefore, using a 45, the deputy would have been at an even bigger tactical disadvantage.

Most cops use 9mm and 40. Almost none carry a 45 of any make. Lot of people try to say a 9 will do just asmuch damage due to higher velocity. This is proven bull though cause if is was true the 223 would be one of the most devistating rounds. Its not just speed that does it. Its mass+velocity. Expansion to .86 is about the average. 2 of those anywhere center mass or 1 to the face is going to end the attack right now. JHP when fired thru clothing more times than not just ends up acting hardball and does minimal damage in my opinion.

In this situation cops sometimes think "well he is jerking my chain" or may be thinking that he wont use the gun. Golden rule is if you pull the gun you better use it or you will pay for it. He hesitated and it costed him his life.

According to another blog, the prosecution seems to be malfunctioning because Andrew Brannan is insane. He accurately calculated & shot utilizing his excellent marksmanship to murder the officer. They have to learn the difference between a sober insane guy and a mentally retarded guy. Andrew Brannan is not mentally retarded. Georgia needs a lot of of help to overcome their incompetency to process this case. Or, do they want to release this POS onto the street & wait someone to execute him?

I can't believe I watched this. NOTHING OF VALUE WAS SAID. .45ACP and 9mm were not compared OTHER than to say this guy THINKS the cop was carrying a 9mm. He has NO idea what the cop was carrying. He THINKS a stomach shot with .45ACP is a knock down shot and 9mm isn't. Wow. Neither caliber to the stomach can be assured to be an incapacitating shot (note: knock down shots don't exist by kinetic energy alone). If you happen to read some comments first, skip the video.

Officers in any other situation not involving a firearm, usually are required by their department to try using a taser or a asp to detain or disarm a subject if possible, obviously that was not an option. He would still be alive today and the perp would have received his well-deserved death.

It is not fair to say that the cop is at fault here, that is not ethical. Cops under statute of the law have the authority to shoot to kill once a perp goes for a weapon. I agree, obviously people would say its police brutality if he shot him right when he went for the gun, I guess thats the world we live in. Im a range guy and one sunny Sunday I been shooting with my old Beretta 92 (9mm) to a human metal figure black painted in the range, the 92 is very accurate and easily can group the shoots like white dots on the target and after a few mags I switched to my friend Colt 45 and making more bigger dots in the target and making the rust blow from the back of the metal figure in the air like a spray, so was easy to understand the .45 hit way more harder the targets and more stop power.

I am a former N.C. State Trooper and I know of this case due to training classes, and the only thing I can say is the officer did wait but he was slapped with P.B. charge already. If these bleeding heart libs will shut up when we have to deal with animals this would not happen. It makes a officer second guess his training. As a officer I would rather lose my job than my life or as we say I would rather be judged by 12 then carried by 6.

i watched the video and as a former law enforcement officer I had more questions than answers. I wondered why the Deputy didn't tase the man, I wondered why the Deputy didn't shoot the man before he was able to shoot the Deputy, I wondered why backup wasn't there quicker, and I wondered why when the man charged the Deputy the first time, he didn't put the guy on the ground and cuff him. Like I said, I had more questions then answers.

@rhv201 I work for a L.E agency. let me try to answer a few of your questions. Most cops don't have teasers. Sadly a lot of officers are not willing to use physical force or deadly physical force. I feel that these kind of officers should not be on the job. A single man patrol car can cover a large area. so it would commonly take a long time for back up to show up. putting him in cuffs would have been would have been a dangerous situation as well. i agree with 155Millimeter @ 4min mark

NO , the Officer DEFENDED himself when the driver charged . If you want to get technical law says the officer can dictate you stay in your vehicle, or have you step out of vehicle, (as longs as the stop is valid) so yeah technically dancing in the street was against the law at that point..

I have actually seen a guy enter the emergency room @ EAMC with seven .45 acp wounds to the chest, stomach and HEAD area. He lived and went home a week later. So Pistol rounds are NOT that effective. ps This video is a Standard training video in the stae of Georgia and Alabama. The cop was young and inexperienced. When painic sets in you are trying to survive not closing the distance.

The video pissed me off as well. The police are put between a rock and a hard place. If they use excessive force the public bitches at them and if the police don't react they end up dead. I think the officer could have done a lot differently to save himself like grabbing his shotgun/AR-15. As far as 9 vs 45 goes I would rather carry a 45, but not in a 1911. A high cap Para-Ordanance would be okay. I'd rather use an xdm .45. I think experience and training trump all. The military vet beat the cop
