I think the worst ever Bergman movie. The Jewish scenes are here, probably only because Bergman wanted Oscars from the Jewish film makers of America.
@joooachim No can ever surpass the artistry of Ingmar Bergman and his cinematographer, Sven Nykvist as well as many acclaimed performances who starred in his films. MTV...what the hell has happened to you in over a decade? Nothing is the same anymore. Oh, well.
I do not know if that 5 hour version is released in Sweden or not? I am from Finland and I have it. If it is not available in Sweden you can easily buy it via net delivered by post from Britannia for example. You know those net stores like Amazon and many other. I think that it is very strange if that 5 hours version is not released in Sweden today, becouse it is available in net stores European wide with swedish lanquage and english subtitles.
Well, I still remember this film and how it facinated me when I saw it first time. There are really rare films that have had that kind of influence. The film is simply amazing, the greatest work of Bergman absolutely. That film is real art and film classic, not calculated mass entertainment product, so easy to forget after watching.
I saw this movie over summer holidays when I was 11 or twelve. It has such an impact on one's conciousness, that it affects me to this day, some twenty years later. Still an amazing fim. What an incredible artist Bergman was.
On it's initial release, there was a storm of critcism over the fact that the father of Fanny and Alexander looked like Adolph Hitler because of his mustache which has since been changed or simply air brushed out. The original Hitlerian looking father made the film very creepy especially when his ghost appears before Alexander in the drawing room softly playing the piano. It is one of the most hauntingly eerie and yet realistic moments I've ever seen like some very vivid dream.
i forgot i ever watched this movie. It really dosnt feel like an Ingmar Bergman film but its great none the less

Not bashing this movie but without the voice over trailer guy I really can't make out what this is about. Will give it a try though.

This might be Bergman's greatest film. Some might argue for Persona, Wild Strawberries or The Seventh Seal. Haunting in the most literal sense!
