hi, i have an powermac g5 that keeps freezing at either the apple logo spinning gear screen, or the booting mac loading bar screen. then the fans turn into a tornado. what should i do? i reseated the ram, wiped the ram, and even tried a different hdd. please help! thanks!
@deertzTV sorry I didn't mean to snap like that, but I read your comment after I experienced a very misfortunate event. I'm not a bad guy and I'm very sorry. Also there's nothing special in midol. Mostly what is in tylenol with a little caffeine, and a mild decongestant.
@stydel311 RISC is a lot more efficient than CISC, so read up before you comment. It's why the IBM power7 will run a lot faster than higher clocked xeons.
These machines are truly amazing. I purchased a dual processor 2.5Ghz PowerPC on Craigslist for $200. It's in excellent condition. Only problem was that I opened the case and unplugged the cable from behind the power switch and plugged it back in and it fired right up! It's been running like a champ since. I removed the SATA hard drive and installed a 250GB Hitachi PATA drive with a very long ATA133 cable that came out of a U1 server. This machine rocks!
First off, it's a PowerPC model, so it can't run Windows. Secondly, it's not supposed to play games, it's a mac. It's made for productivity in the art's. ;)
The 2.3 dual cores are brilliant for things like CS2 or Final Cut Pro 5, But i find they lack in the web browsing, we constantly have java or flash errors when streaming the radio and using google maps.. It really depends on how much you are going to pay and what would you use it for.
Hi, I also had a G5 Quad. It was a great machine, despite it being a liquid cooled unit, it appears Apple fixed the coolant problems in the newer G5 Quads. Because of it, I now have a 2008 mac pro. I will always be in debted to the G5 Quad. When I 1st got it, it only had 2GB of memory.. by the end of June 2009, it had 16GB of memory + extras and it was hard for me to let it go, but I had to move forward.
i'm thinking about getting a 2.7Ghz Liquid cooled model, for College, i know it will be no where near as fast as a Mac Pro, but i am only gonna be running final cut studio 2 i'll give it 8GB ram should run brilliantly
you might want to get a better card. I was looking at a PowerMac g4 MDD and it had a 9600 card in it. You probably want a 9800 Pro 256 mb or a geforce 7800
Ah ic,well maybe the "Apple" max is 8GB where in reality it can actually hold 9.5GB, great example, the Powermac 6100 Apple said it would only hold a max of 64 MB with 8MB on the board totaling 70 MB,where you can expand it to 512 MB with 8 MB on the board totaling 520 MB. So it depends on the RAM technology and the board.
i got a dual 2.3 with 7 gigs ram...only thing I do that taxes it is video editing

@stydel311 I know this may sound confusing but that G5 Mac is about 4 times faster than your PC.

Hi!
I have a question for you regarding your graphic card!
My Power Mac G5 is a Dual 2,3 GHz /w 2,5 GB RAM and 250GB HDD.
It's using an ATi Radeon 9600 AGP with 128 MB VRAM.
Your graphics seem MUCH, much faster than mine.
May it be other stuff like the HDD or something, that's much weaker in mine or is it just the graphic card that I need to change for best performance?
I appreciate a reply :)

themudrats 3 years ago
How much disk space? MIne was only a 1.66 ghz and 75 GB so I upgraded to a 24-inch iMac. Its soooo fast!
blueblob4 2 years ago
how do you have 9.5 gb of ram, when the max is 8 gb?
bkeaton22 2 years ago
The max on the last PowerMac G5 systems was 16 GB.
zakruowrath 2 years ago
Yes, 16 GB of ram was the max for the quad core G5. But the max ram on a dual core G5 is 8 GB, I know I own a dual core 2.7 GHz G5 with 8 GB of ram.
