But notice that Kurt does eventually hit that note at the end. Just missed it coming in. The fact that he found a way around hitting this note this way after this just shows he wasn't a bad singer.
Everyone who keeps busting on Kurt Young needs to check out the Singing Americans 2010 NQC Reunion set. Check out Gloryroad @ 7:43....much worse than Kurt's note. Give the guy a break, it's been over 20 years. He had a really nice voice and was just singing higher than he should have been. Which, by the way, is mostly the Cats fault for not lowering the keys a little. No one but SG geeks would have known the difference. And I'm one of the biggest Cathedral fans out there!
Anybody can have a bad day, so I wouldn't hold the voice mishap against him, but I'm sorry, his voice just does not fit well with the rest of the group. It was cerainly for the best that he was replaced by Ernie.
I have some old Statesmen live recordings with Rosey, and I've heard him miss a few. Everybody misses sometime. This was just a really bad concert to miss a note on. Also, I think Kurt's voice may just not have fit them at this time.
thats my dad jerk!!! he hit a bad note because he wasnt used to singing that much!! now hes a youth pastor a jubilee worship center singing still and playing the bass so shove off!!.... go listen to the other this old house and listen to him nail the note!
kurt was terrible, we wasn't confident at all. and his voice showed it. that was an easy ntoe for someone with his voice could've hit like a baseball, but he butchered the amazing ending chord of that song.
Kurt was having some difficulty in the modulations just before the ending; you would think he would have felt/heard it, and gone for a soft-landing final note, rather than trying to emulate Danny's "power" ending.
This was shot at The Tennessee Performing Arts Center. For some unknown reason the Doves left the Opry House and all the excellent production facilities offered there. When Marc
Repp mixed the Doves @ the Opry House it was the best. But you guys are right this year they had someone come in to mix from the west coast. I trying to remember his name?....
I have never seen this but who ever was working the sound system that night should have been fired...it was not the singers it was the audio man who has no idea or for that fact never worked with a southern gospel group.Rather than leave this posted I would erase it as it is the worst I ever heard the Cathedrals sing ever. Please note I am a big fan just never heard this .
The reason that Garry was a screaming tenor is because that is how Big Jim Hamill and Eldridge Fox wanted him to sound. I work with Garry now and I can tell you he does know how to sing and does not sing in any way like he did in the 80s.
Emelton, I remember Garry talking about not wanting the Kingsmen job to be the one he got because he wasn't the type of tenor that they liked. However, he modified his voice and style to become one.
I had heard about this performance. I had been told this is what doomed this tenor. Unfortunately, they never were able to adequately replace Danny. Ernie was decent, but now is a dancing, prancing simpleton.
fbcwpastor....im sure u like the guys, as jake hess said, to just "clump up"...but im a 17 year old and i love the energy Ernie brings with his group...im sorry ud just prefer them to stand and sing..but George Younce loved it...and he knows quartet music...dancing doesnt hurt anything so dont talk about Ernie Haase's dancing...its perfectly ok to move around a lil bit...
you said it preacher! Ernie's vaudeville show is ridiculous! And only driving the few young people that actually listen to Southern Gospel away. They think he's a dork!
Actually, Ernie & Sig Sound, David Phelps, & Wes & Marshall from the vocal band are pretty much the only reason I enjoy so. gospel as much as I do--so don't be too quick to judge them...or the "young people" you speak about. mysterycurleywolf, keep up the awesome listening! And I totally agree with you--George Younce was all about moving around (and besides, George was Ernie's mentor AND father-in-law. He totally loved the energy & spirit Ernie brought to so. gospel quartet!)
Please....from someone who isn't much older than you....don't put Ernie and his circus act in the same category as Wes & Marshall. That's really insulting to them. Ernie's lead and baritone are great singers, but his choreography is what makes non-southern gospel fans "our" age, think he and the industry are a joke!
Hmm, that's possible, but I also think there are a few other reasons people "our" age think the industry are a joke...Anyway, since I don't think we're going to ever be on the same page on this one, can we just agree to disagree? I'm sorry you don't enjoy sig sound, but I personally am glad they are around. It's nice to hear these amazing songs kept alive for another generation. As long as God's getting the glory, I'm cool with it! God bless!
Exactly Ernie is letting a whole new generation enjoy SG. Its almost as bad as the older generation thinking anyone who sang in a quartet like the cathedrals couldn't be saved and are tearing down Gods name by there performance... When really the question is are they Glorifing God... Yes they are.
Dude get of that high horse you are on and realize that times change. I see nothing wrong with EHSS. They are a great group who have a lot of enthusiasm for the Lord. My grandfather sang in an old style quartet. He like to listen to EHSS. Just because they dance around don't write them off. Have you seen the farewell performance of This Old House. George himself is dancing around on stage
@RedCeltYank1. When Ernie was with the cathedrals you didn't see him jumpin around and doin a "train" and showboatin then. George and the gang would've told him where to go. Dancing in the spirit is one thing, Receiving a blessing from the lord and showing it is one thing, but the crap they do on stage is a show and I think it's a joke. Looks like a buncha monkeys dancing around. You couldn't pay me enough money to go see them. The young kids like that garbage cuz they don't know any better.
The songs were also part of the problem. The Cathedrals were still staging songs that had very high notes that Kurt couldn't hit. Unfortunately, it was too late for Kurt Young to sing new songs, because he left just a little before they recorded Climbing Higher and Higher.
As stated before, I don't think it would have been so bad if the sounds wasn't so unbalanced and the tenor wasn't about 40% louder than everyone else.
My dad's a sound guy at our church. He pretty much fixed everything up and updated the churches sound equipment. The only problem is that sometimes the microphones speaker and monitors start "sneexing".
u know with the sound checks those guys do..im wondering if its just the recording that came back through the video and audio portion and wasn't like comming out of the mains for the audiance. I set all our sound equipment up....if it was really that bad that was seriously embarassing
Definitely not the worst tenor note I've heard from a major group. As another poster mentioned, I hate that many people will only remember Kurt for this one note. He actually has a nice voice.
In my opinion though, this is just more evidence that most groups don't have a clue what a real tenor is supposed to sound like. And just because a note CAN be hit doesn't mean it SHOULD be hit.
Tony, Perry, Gill, Peter Cetera, Groban, Phelps types are lacking in SG. The GVB has had some. I loved the Funderbruk screaming sound. :) I hadn't heard ANY SG tenors until then who didn't sound like they weren't on helium. Hearing Funderburk nail the Db on this song on Jubilate '88 was radical to me back then. What passion and strength. The Jason Crabb of tenors I'd say. :)
Bill Baize was great in the '70s. Murray has a nice smooth sound. Larnelle does too, but not SG. Hampton's good too.
I do find myself liking some tenors I might not have as much before I got into SG. Ernie Haase (who at times has a nice sound) & Steve Ladd are two. I never got into Garry Sheppherd's voice (now there's a screaming tenor), but I loved him on The Judgement though. :)He was fun in the really high stuff he would scream. Booth does well. I'm sure I am missing some. :)
hear kurts voice, it sounds like he has a cold or something wrong.....on the end, mark is patting his back..he knows that something is wrong with kurts voice
Actually, it wasn't Kurt's voice that caused the problems. As stated before, it was the sound mix.
The reason why Kurt's voice cracked was because he was a lower tenor. Danny was a high tenor singer. That final note Kurt had to hit was a very high note. I'd say it was near a soprano note. Not good for a low tenor.
None of the guys sound good on this clip and I remember it quite well. Wasn't Kurt's fault, it was the mix. When a singer can't here the quality of sound they need a lot of bad things can happen, even to the best. George sounds like he's pushing it. Did not know Kurt, but I hate it that he will be remembered for this one bad note. I liked his voice.
Commenting on Kurt: 1st, he has a nice rounded smooth quality voice that's pleasant to hear, not thin and nasal like some tenors. 2nd, I think he sang a little too high at the start of this song, not allowing much margin for the ending high note. Third, his voice cracked because he obviously tried to power too forcefully into a dramatic high note. Danny F. was a hard act to follow, and I'm sure Kurt was under lot's of pressure, especially to shine for the Cats at the Dove awards!!
no bubers2007 is right because they sing this old house and i've just started living...i to have the same video and kirt sounds very good on those videos...it might have been nashville now but i am not sure..kirt sounded great and hit that high not on the end just like danny would have (but not sounding as good as danny
Hi Volscot. I remember watching this when it first aired & was upset upon hearing how out of balance Kurt's volume was compared to the other members. Aside from Kurt's unfortunate flub ending, the sound person didn't do the Cat's any justice. It would be nice to give Kurt some positive publicity so I would like to know if you plan on posting Kurt's "This Old House" performance & his other 2 songs that you mentioned having on your NN video. Thank you for posting the really good music!!
I absolutely plan to post the NN performances. I'm just not sure how long it will take me to get to them. The other two songs are "In The Depths Of The Sea" & "I've Just Started Living".
BTW, I really enjoy the 2 Priority cassettes that I own that feature Kurt.
Kurt's voice wasn't used to the Cat's schedule, either. If I recall, prior to joining the Cathedrals, Kurt had sung with a trio whose style was more like the Booth Brothers, and whose schedule was probably nowhere near as rigorous as the Cat's.
Kurt sang with Priority before joining the Cats. They may have been a trio at one time, but they were a quartet on the two cassettes that I own. Your stylistic comparison to the Booths is accurate.
Sounds like Kurt is the one filming this from a living room. It's like he's dubbing his voice. But I'm sure he isn't, because later, it sounds like he's on there. Plus, I'd think he'd keep singing till he stopped his voice from cracking at the end.
I agree that the audio mix on this is bad. Trust me, this is how bad it sounded on the live broadcast. I watched it live on TV and have watched the video several times since.
The "Gospel Jubilee" (GJ) that bubers2007 is referring to was a show on TNN in the early 1990's. I don't know that the Cats were ever on GJ with Kurt Young. I do have a video of them singing "This Old House" & 2 other songs with Kurt on Nashville Now (NN). GJ and NN were both on TNN, so maybe that's where the confusion came in.
I'm pretty sure the NN performance was just a day or 2 before the Dove Awards that this is from. NN booked the Cats because they were already in town for the Doves.

In my opinion, the "screaming tenor" is a large reason why SGM has never become a mainstream genre of music (regardless of what the fans think).
Andrea Bocelli is a natural tenor.
Vince Gill is a natural tenor.
Steve Perry is a natural tenor.
David Phelps is a natural tenor.
Heck, even Meat Loaf is a natural tenor.
Men that sing in a shrill voice aren't tenors. They're just annoying. :)
Tony Rush
former pianist for the Anchormen (responsible for more screaming tenors than most other groups)
