Haha, your timeline of enjoyment of Twilight was exactly the same as mine...loved it at around age 14/15, and started hating it shortly before the release of the first film. The only difference is that I now watch the film for 100% comedy value!
Oh man when I went and saw Breaking Dawn, the wolf scenes just killed me. Me and my friend were just laughing so hard and it was awkward both because it was supposed to be a "serious" scene but because no one else was laughing either. Oh Twilight...
I read the whole series the first summer I was in college and I was 18 lol. I just thought of them as a fun summer read, and I kindof liked the books but after seeing the first movie and looking over the books again, I realized how bad they were!
Haha. I read the first three books and really liked them, and then i read the fourth one. That book was so bad. It made me realize just terrible the first three are. And I haven't. O
So, our Twilight stories are the same. That's really strange. But I was also on vacation when Breaking Dawn came out, my friends and I talked about nothing but Twlight, and I was a freak. Then I realized that the fans and the actors in the films annoyed me immensely, I hated the first film, then realized how awful it truly is.
oh good. yeah sex tends to fade you out... if it was good. xD the writing is shit. But the story isn't horrible for the teen genre. And the actors have tried their best.
lol my story is the same, i got so excited over the first film because i loved the books so much and i was about 12 and then i walked out and was like "oh" but still tried to hold on to my childhood, but after new moon came out my nostalgia was a lost cause.
I just got back from watching it. I used to LOVE twilight when I was about 14-15, until I read Breaking Dawn. OH MY GOD, what a terrible book of crap and disappointment that was. I tried rereading the first one, and I realized the whole series had been crap from the very beginning. I will say, I had the same experience watching it as you did. Although it made me laugh A LOT, it also reminded me of the joy I felt during my Twilight fase, and I understand why I used to like it. I'm still ashamed.
@HeyitsmeIA I know how you feel! I always read them as kind of 'good' fanfiction. But Breaking Dawn came and I was just like, THIS SHIT IS TERRIBLE. I used to like Twilight too, I'm a little bit ashamed but, hey, we all go through our phases, right? I'd read them again. They were entertaining, and if you stripped away all of the bullshit stuff like Bella jumping off a cliff and Edward Sparkling, it was a solid cliché plot--like that makes it any better, but everything is pretty much the same.
I watched the film online for nostalgia's sake - didn't want the franchise getting anymore money haha. The first few I found had Russian dubbing, which made the sex scene(s?) quite interesting.
It kind of pisses me off when people say Bella got fucked so hard she got knocked out, even thought I'm not a fan of the series. If you're gonna hate on a book, then don't criticise it for something that never even happened!
I did the same thing while watching breaking dawn, when the wolves were talking i couldn't stop laughing because they were having serious conversations, but they looked like puppies that I wanted to cuddle with.
I'm so glad you said you kindof liked it! I was like you, LOVED it at first, then realised that it was actually awful, and just not progressive in any way. But still..when I went to see Breaking Dawn I enjoyed it, and my feminist conscience has been upset ever since! It must just be a nostalgia thing!
I decided to read all the books before the movie came out, just to see what all the hype was about. My brother (yup, brother!) and I read Breaking Dawn while we were on holiday after buying it at the airport because we were so desperate to read it.
I hate Twilight as much as any intelligent human being, but I'm really not seeing the problem with rough sex. Maybe it's just that I haven't read the books or seen the movies, so I don't have all the context, but it seems like at least some of you guys have some moral issue with rough sex/BDSM and I'm a little confused by that. Perhaps that can be next week's topic?
@ImpassionedPlatypi I think it's just because such a large part of the fandom is in such a youngish range and the line between what's abuse and what's consensual might be not so clear. Perhaps an older teen group and up understands that line, but an impressionable child might think that hitting is okay in a relationship because he "loves you so much". Most people are probably uncomfortable with exposing kids to sex let alone rough sex/ fetishes. Perhaps Meyer should have considered her audience?
THANK YOU! I didn't think she was unconscious either, so the other videos confused me with that aspect. I'm not paying another £13 to go and see it again though (damn London cinemas!).
Ugh, I was so obsessed with twilight until just before the second film came out. I think the internet helped ruin it for me because if you use tumblr and like twilight you will be sacrificed and offered up to the harry potter gods.
Go to a uni workshop and do 2 hours of bullshit? You must be doing an arts degree :P I feel your pain, I just finished my exams, the core arts unit I did was entirely bullshit!
Yup, that is pretty much what happened with me. I was a fan, but then it just sort of was gone. I don't hate on them though, they just sort of exist now.
I read the first half of the second book, didn't ilke it so I just stopped and haven't bothered since. I read it because stephen king had said shit about it, so I wanted to know what it was all about. you know... that nuttymadam video here on youtube as well. I think I've seen the first and the third movie. I don't know... these are just movies, not terrible, but also quite mindless - like many things in the world, so no need to care really.
I read the books, and the only thing sentimental about them is remembering the time period in which I read them. Like i dont care about the books or the characters at all, but I care about who I was/the people I knew, WHEN i read them (If that makes sense?)
I actually never liked Twilight. It took me like a year to read the first book and I just didn't care about it at all... then I watched Alex Reads Twilight and I realised how hilarious it can be :D
I'm going to see Breaking Dawn just for comedy value :P
I am so glad that my best friend and I are not the only ones that laughed to the point of tears because of the wolves... that was, by far, the funniest thing ever.
Oh my GOD! The wolf scene... I spent around 10 minutes with tears streaming down my face, convulsing on my cinema seat...I have not laughed that much in years...that scene made the film.
Yeah, I wonder why people keep saying she was unconscious? It definitely just faded out and she woke up the next morning. Plus, after she woke up she was having flashbacks a.k.a. specifically remembering the sex. lol I'm glad Lex pointed that out because I was watching the other sarcaschicks videos wondering "What the hell are they talking about?" haha
Oh god, my Twilight "story" is EXACTLY the same (even down to the vacation bit), but I was 13 at the time. I also used to like the Twilight series...haven't seen the movie yet, I'm waiting for all the hardcore fans to stop seeing the movie so i can laugh at it in peace. XD
The only Twilight movie I saw was New Moon. And, honestly, I didn't think it was poorly done. The story was stupid, Bella was terrifying, and the dialogue left a lot to be desired, but it wasn't that bad. Like you said, they did what they could with what Meyer gave them. The only problem I had with the movie was the obvious use of Lautner as a pornographic device.
Cut from we same cloth we are. I read all the books and was quite a fan. after the first film came out I reread harry potter and remembered what it was like when an author was at least able to use grammar correctly, and from there my opinion of the book slowly went down.
she's not fucked unconscious. and Breaking Dawn was actually good, in a funny way. Me and my friend pissed off the whole cinema by laughing. A lot. So yeah. I empathise with this.
I had a similar Twilight experience to you, read all the books, watched the films, was never obsessed with it but thought it was ok. Then I actually thought about the themes are realized how awful it is! The writing is fairly horrendous too, I gave it a go though so I feel i'm now justified to dislike it! Still have a strange urge to see Breaking Dawn however...
I was totally in love with Edward too XD he was always so sweet and caring. I stopped liking it because my friends would talk ALL DAY about it, just endlessly, to the point where I just hated it with such a passion. But I always thought Bella was a total moron, she really annoyed me.
I'm kind of sick of this twilight thing. Yes, the books are stupid and are nothing compared to 'highbrow' literature, yes, this last movie was ridiculous. But if you, by some strange miracle, did like the books or the movies, then just like it, for god's sake. Since when do people need to apologize for liking something, even if that something is not 'generally accepted' as good or whatever?
Also, she isn't fucked unconscious, it only seems like that because the scene fades out, like you said.
@woohoowwww I don't apologise for liking it, I genuinely REGRET liking it, because with hindsight I can see that the messages in the Twilight series are actually dangerous to young women. I also don't enjoy reading the books anymore as they're dreadfully written, I've attempted to re-read them but found it impossible. back when I was 14 I didn't tend to notice these things, but I've grown up a bit now, so now I do.
Wow lex it's like we share the exact same thoughts on twilight. EVERY thought and opinion you had and have on the books/movie/fan-dom are identically to my own. I was once a fan and than after the first movie I realized how ridiculous the books and movies truly are.
I read the books because I was told I couldn't say they were shit until id had read them. As it turned out i actually realy liked twilight book 1 (I remeber reading it whilst walking down stairs going from one class to another)
Then book 2 was ok, I struggled to finish book 3 and I liked only the last half of book 4.
Yep. Don't remember the unconscious bit either... =/
I thought BD was the weirdest movie of the saga. I "Wthed" so much with my friends at the wolf scene too.
And bcz I live in a "more closed up" country, they cut out the honeymoon scene and the birthing scene =/ So I'll never know the horrid details of the c section =P
I went through the twilight phrase too, a little over 2 years. Until the year I turned 16 =P
I thought she was unconscious. She wakes up in the morning and she doesn't remember what happened the previous night, and doesn't know how she got bruises and feathers all over her.
I've seen all the movies, and they make me want to read the books because to be honest, I don't think the movies are that interesting. The first one is boring, and then the next two were a little better and more funny. This latest one was strange and honestly kinda gross. Of course i'll still see the last one though. xD But I genuinely wonder what makes the books so enthralling, because the films are just a bunch of awkward conversations and heavy-breathing closeups.
in comparison to you being on holiday so you couldn't get the book, when the deathly hallows book was released i cried 'caue my mum wouldn't let me buy it.. it was because my sister bought it for me as a thanks for being an usher at her wedding. i had to wait until june/ july and i was not amused! :3
my best friend and I were in tears of laughter throughout the majority of Breaking Dawn..
especially there honeymoon haha oh man.

I went to the first night of Twilight screening dressed as Harry Potter and screamed
'SHOULD HAVE GONE TO HOGWARTS YOU FUCKING FAIRY!' When the titles rolled out....
I got kicked out for making loud obscene comments (which I thought were rather appropriate and fucking hilarious) and still haven't seen the end...

Cheeseballs were definitely the stars here.

As it turned out i actually realy liked twilight book 1 (I remeber reading it whilst walking down stairs going from one class to another)
Then book 2 was ok, I struggled to finish book 3 and I liked only the last half of book 4.

she isn't unconscious- and I am glad, cause I enjoyed it too

I too had a weak moment when I was 15 and being obsessed with twilight. Being young, you know... and stuff. I didn't see the horribleness really.

She wasn't unconscious in the book, no.

Nah, she wasn't unconscious. She had sex and then fell asleep, like normal people, but the bruises and stuff kinda freaked me out :)

Hahaha, nice Lex, I'm kinda half worried that the same thing will happen to me if I go to the movie.
