    Buon ascolto e viva Verdi!

  • Newsflash--Damrau wove magic at the Met Opera tonight, spun gold, took grip of the audience & had 'em on their feet, at the conclusion of this aria. I haven't witnessed such a burst of applause in a long time, which went on & on, even though she was offstage by aria's end. I've loved this singer for a long time, seen her many times at the Met, even heard her sing Gilda before. But I have never heard her like this! Absolutely at the top of her game. Utterly breathtaking. Thank you Diana.

  • @roykogan Credit must be paid also to the brilliant Fabio Luisi, who conducted both the Dresden clip here & the performance tonight at the Met (where he had a better orchestra, surely). Were there even other musicians in attendance, besides Luisi & Damrau? Rigoletto was good, the Duke horrifying. A sad day for mediocrity, but who cared? Give us a little sublimity, Peter Gelb, and we'll forgive a lot. Thank you, for Maestro Luisi. And thank you, maestro, for gracing our town.

  • @roykogan i went to the performance on 4/30 (not sure if you attended the same one). filianoti could easily have ruined the whole thing--he cracked twice during la donna e mobile. thank goodness for diana.

  • She is a singer AND an actress!! She is complete!

  • i love how you can hear the excitement of love in her voice! fantastic!

  • how bizarre! - is that JDF's underwear she picks up/fondles/sniffs??!!

yes she does have a beautiful voice and does a very credible job here but i've heard voices more suitable/impressive in this aria.

would be interested in knowing who directed/set-designed this production.

  • @rossifigaro That's not his underwear, that's his hat! If you look at their duet you will see that he throws it off.

  • One of the best interpretations of "Caro nome" I have heard-that of Amelita Galli-Curci of course is the gold standard. This lady is so beautiful as well, and these days it contributes a lot to the effectiveness. HEM, Vero Beach, FL

  • @bodiloto Sorry to answer in English, but I just guessed what you wrote by my Spanish-skills.

Why do you think a virgin cannot feel aroused? Just because she hasn't had any "experiences" yet doesn't mean her body works like it should. ;)

  • Of course the original intention was to write "doesn't work like it should". Makes absolutely no sense the other way round. :D

  • This tempo is criminally slow. It ruins the aria. What was the conductor thinking?

  • @sopranosd I think it underlines the sensuality of this aria. Gilda is trembling with craving.

  • I love her interpretation of this aria!! she may not could be the best coloratura soprano,(although, she's probably one the bests) but this is the best version of this aria I ever heard and saw :D ....

  • authentischer geht es einfach nicht

  • beautifuuuul...

  • Here's the queen of the night posing of dumb little girl. Naaaaaaaaaaaah. Does she need to be aways this beautiful?????

  • Beauty, brains, & talent- not a bad combo. I've heard it sung better but that hardly seems important. Brava!

  • bravissima

  • brutto .

  • She is breathtakingly beautiful and excellent in this recording. I'm not a Verdi expert but this rendition really goes deep for me.

  • She is such a sweeet lady..aww

  • breathing is too frequent, and in wrong places...She was a great queen of the night - somehow I get the feeling she's better at being evil..

  • That is how this aria is written!

  • she does breathe in the "wrong" places but I think that's part of her interpretation of Gilda

  • Divine so....

  • I agree with you spbsalon, Verdi requires a lot of delicacy and long notes. Damrau should stick to her russian opera, her italian pronunciation is bad. But I love her sining queen of the night and no one better than her at that!

  • It doesn't matter that her pronunciacion is not perfect, after all she is not native.

She gave this piece sth outstanding, she is simply amazing:)

  • right...her Russian opera. ok. sure.

  • One thing more : what she smells is an underwear. Quite seasoned, and that's a good thing. This character is mostly represented as prudish. Who said she has to be ? Third listening : still so pure !

  • I think what she smells looks like a hat. You can kind of see the brim when she picks it up.

  • Maybe. A hat inside a bed ? Possible. Being honest, I haven't seen the main representation, so I have no possibility to know what happened before. Anyway, that's sexual... (Have I such an obsession ?...)

  • Adorable ! Finally, the taboo is broken : she is sensual, sexual, pulpy, alive and in love (her body too...) and so scamp.

Her voice is pure, deep and brilliant.

    Wonderful ! RARE !

  • DIVINA

  • It is not enough voice for Verdi

  • I understand why you would say that but my personal belief is that the difficulty in singing Verdi is not in the volume but in the demands on the voice. For example Verdi asks for high pianissimos, staccato altissimo, power at times, and a solid middle register which i hear Damrau is pretty darn good at! I admit that this may not be her best performance of this aria though

  • ABSOLUTELY LOVE HER!

  • i dont like these modern approaches...part of the story is that it is set in that particular time...

  • Hmm. It's always hard for me to watch her objectively. I think she has a very good technique, but there is something in both her acting and her natural tone that doesn't agree with me. I guess, she's wonderful, but not quite my favorite? Does that make sense to anyone else? Anyway, great job here.

  • She does come off as a little strong/exaggerated sometimes, but I think the perspective from the balcony of an opera house is quite.. distant. Usually on video it seems exaggerated though. I like it though. Subtle acting is not for me XD

  • I simply think that this isn't a good representation of her best work. Her queen of the night is nearly unmatchable by most modern voices but I agree that this particular performance is a bit shaky. I still applaud this performance.

  • Wow, that was hypnotizing!

  • molto agresiva....

  • I like the dramatic element that she brought to this aria. Unlike the tradictional little Gilda that we used to see. Here is a more mature women with a strong voice. I like this new type of Gilda.

  • it means she didi it wrong...Gilda is an over protected young woman...

  • Don't get me wrong I do like Damrau a lot, but I feel that when she gets into a lyrical repertoire she has trouble creating a mood/emotion. Her technique is fierce but she does not use to express only to impress. She puts in a trill because she can, not because the moment in the piece needs it. Do love her technique as I said, but her acting I guess still needs work.

  • any singer that can create an overtone while trilling is completely up there in my book. luckily i already love this woman so much....i wanna marry her. lol

  • She brings a new life to this aria and refresh it completely. How amazing it is! Caro nome is her totally.

Here's something that either Callas or any other singer could do.

  • !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Cor

    Netherlands

  • Ooh I was afraid of this. Like many coloraturas, she lacks the lyric singing abilities needed here. Her sound lacks the beautiful, smooth line and Italianate tone that spell success in this aria.

  • ¡Excelente!

    Viva Diana!

  • Excellent as close to perfection as it can get...but not yet, it could be so much better. I did not like that note at minute 5:14 it wasn't intense enough. Not to mention the acting wich takes a lot from her singing, it's just distracting to me and the smiling ruins part of her singing. I feel like she does Gilda in a "Rossinian" sort of way wich is a severe mistake. Other than that this Gilda is a promesing one way better than so many out there

    Viva Diana!

  • 7 and a half minutes of glorious singing then someone picks out 1 (one!!!) note that is not sheer perfection. How sad can you get?

  • brava e bella!

  • There's a singing actress for you! What technique!

  • another one! xD

  • Divine!

  • unbelievably beautiful!

  • what a voice control when she lays down

  • Vocally one of the best renditions I've heard. I am not sure about the interpretation... this is a Gilda who does not look very innocent haha.

  • by god!!! this woman is really the voice of god!!! there are not words enough to describe her" she is truly a music genius!

  • Superb!!!!!! She's the best...

  • Yes she's one of best Gilda in Opera history!!!! Grande Diana!!!!!
