  • Me and Siskel said really at the same time

  • Wow. I love Ebert, but fuck is he wrong on this one. Compares the scenes in hell to Bosch? What the fuck was he even watching, and with what inebriates?

  • The movies not that good but it's great for a quick action film fix.

  • "That's funny to you? At this point in your life??"

  • The only thing I remember about this movie is the clown and the hell scene. So i have to agree with Ebert about those two things. But the rest was junk

  • What i did not like form the film was spawn peeled back his face every now and then

  • i thought this movie was awesome! to this day it brings me back to those memories when i was a kid!

"the effects sucked" dude, this was 1997 were talking about here. thats not bad for that time.

now, i havent seen the animated series or the comics but i thought the movie was sick and the Clown/The Violator was awesome and hilarious as hell!

this is a opinion but im giving mine out because i still think this movie was awesome and funny.

    there.

  • Animaed series from HBO will always be the best!

  • I remember trying to rent this from Blockbuster so many times as a kid... lol.. there were a couple different VHS versions I remember.. bad movie, but it'd be fun to give another watch.. eh i'll download it. hahah

  • A real disappointment. A reboot would be welcome.

  • @sammycut1 mcfarlane has been talking about a reboot ever since this movie came out, sadly i don't think it'll ever happen

  • @camaroman101, Todd McFarlane will do a Spawn reboot. You can watch the video interview he was in here on Youtube. Spawn will face off against an evil version of himself in the reboot film like Nicolas Cage will faceoff against a Dark Ghostrider in Ghostrider:Spirit Of Vengeance. What do you think about this story in a Spawn movie so much better than Spawn being in a pointless film serving Malbogia to kill Jason Quinn to unleash his army on the world. I mean we've seen movies l t.

  • @MrKevinlclayjr where is this interview? he said he was doing a reboot in a darker comic style theme ever since the first movie came out but has never able to get the finincial support for it

  • @camaroman101, You can watch the interview with Todd McFarlane talking about the Spawn rebooted film that is in the works from what I heard in the Hollywood news. They showed a picture of Spawn and the new enemy that Spawn will face in the rebooted film much like Nicolas Cage's return as Johnny Blaze/Ghostrider taking on a dark tormented and demonic side of his Ghostrider good guy alterego. Everyone has a darkness within themselves Christopher Reeve had one and Tobey Maguire.

  • Haha I love how Siskel's looking at Ebert as he's talking. "Dude, what the hell is wrong with you?"

Ebert definitely blazed up for this flick, as that's the only possible way to get any enjoyment out of it. This is by far one of my top 5 most disappointing movies ever made. I was so excited to see it, then walked out of the theater feeling like I'd been gang raped in prison every day for the last seven years.

  • @Batman8657, I don't think ebert was on drugs dude talking about Todd McFarlane's "Spawn" film. He did however take a 180 turn into a trash can trying to badmouth Tim Burton's 1989 film which came out 7 years before Spawn's film. Movie critics should never compare a garbage comic-book based, movie to a comic-book blockbuster film that made Academy Award nominations with it. I mean that is utterly disrespectful Batman8657 wouldn't you agree buddy?

  • so many punds in this fucking movie I cant even stand it -_-

  • i think siskel sick at this point?

  • look if you old farts can't give EACH and EVERY movie a FAIR chance from opening to credits roll then you're no real film critics. You see I CONCEDE I would make a terrible biast film critic b/c I only like a few genres with comicbook movies being among the top - EXACTLY why I'm not a film critic. THEY however ARE and a film critic sits in the seat with the statement that they are open to ALL genres even if natrually they prefer some to others, thats natural but they are passionate about film.

  • I think both are right in their own way. Personally I'm with Siskel a bit more than ebert here. The movie isn't worth a wank.

  • I'm not a tough critic but I really disliked it. Went to see it all excited and then...ugh.

  • They need to remake this.it could be amazing.just keep john as clown

  • I'm with Siskel on this one big time...did Ebert roll one up before seeing this movie? Geez

  • I actually agree with Siskel. I'm not a tough critic but this film really bored me. It deserved a better story.

  • Siskel wins again :)

  • The visual style of Bosch? lol

  • ebert got it right on the visual effects and the funny anecdotes of john leguizamo's character... i liked the movie a lot

  • Does anyone remember the scene where spawn was shooting his gun and nothing came out? or the devil talking with his mouth always open?

  • Michael Jai White was great in Black Dynamite.

  • I would rather watch Batman & Robin than this headache-inducing piece of junk ever again.

  • So much wrong with this picture. I was a huge fan of the comics and action figures, but this... man. They could've had a kid-friendly super hero film or a dark R rated adult film examining Spawns' world and the game between heaven and hell. You can't have both. I think that's the main problem.

The Anime as mentioned is superior.

  • What I like about Roger is that he sticks to his principles as a critic. He doesn't judge a movie against time-honored classics. He judges them based on what they do for the genre they're considered to be a part of. I thoroughly respect him for his views on the movie and agree with what he found enjoyable, as I do agree with Siskel here overall as well. I miss Gene, and I feel bad for Roger. They made a great critical team.

  • Can you imagine Spawn vs. Deadpool? Holy shit. That would be incredible.

  • @SonicThunderBYG ... no, not really. Not taking any side here - but from a statistic point of view, Spawn is a hell of a lot more powerful than Deadpool. Would be rather pointless to see. It's like if Jason Voorhees fought Freddy Krueger in the real world. Oh, wait...

  • @kurvos True, but in the Deadpool comics, Thanos was jealous of Wade (Deadpool) and gave him the curse of immortality. He can feel pain, but he can't die. Contrary to Predator, Deadpool can bleed, but you can't kill him. But it is possible that Spawn could request from Satan to lift Thanos's curse of immortality on Deadpool, so Spawn could in fact kill Deadpool. Nerd powers activate!

  • @SonicThunderBYG Meh... I'm not that much into it anyway - so I don't have much to say about it. My area of expertise would be Batman. XP Buuuut not the comics, because... well, even though I love comics in general - I hate Marvel and DC comics. Why? Because there's way too fucking much multiverse bullshit and billions of issues. What's the point to even get into it? I wouldn't even know where the hell to start. And no, you can't talk me into start reading them.

  • @kurvos I understand completely. That's exactly why I never got into Pokemon or Yugio (spelling?) or anything like that, but when it comes to Marvel and DC, I love it all. On a side note and getting back to Freddy and Jason, Jason won. Regardless of what anyone says, he won in the movie. At least his head was still attached to his body.

  • @SonicThunderBYG ... of course he won. Only reason they made Freddy wink was for the sake of forced fanservice, as they where too afraid to upset the fans of Freddy. Why they didn't decide to make a more interesting movie is beyond me. I mean, why not Jason Voorhees vs Michael Myers? That would have been freakin' perfect. Freddy is like Superman - invincible until he gets his cryptonite (real life in this case), which is the point when he gets defeated. Oh, and PS - I hate Superman.

  • @kurvos I do too. A Jason and Mikey face-off would be awesome. They could have it set up that Crystal Lake is in Illinois and have one of the Strodes go to the lake to get away from Myers. The Crystal Lake town could be renamed to lessen the stupidity, but yes. A Jason vs. Mike Myers would be awesome, and yes. I hate Spuerman too.

  • @SonicThunderBYG It seems like you're willing to discuss opinions in a constructive way. :) If you like to, go and check me out at DeviantArt. My username is Kurvos there as well. I submit comic strips and reviews. Reviews of what? Movies, games, animés... most stuff. I get to hear I am very good at being constructive - and comments are always welcome to start debates.

  • I heard they're gonna make another movie that'll follow the comic better.

  • Ugh, an absolutely terrible movie. I liked the comic, but this movie lacked all of the macabre thrills, characters, and humor that made the comic so much fun. It also had a lousy, lousy story and really bad special effects. I remember at the time, everyone was talking about Spawn's cape. It looks terrible! Its obviously CGI and has no believable physicality. Plus, the fight in cell was pretty laughable. Avoid this movie at all costs!

  • Wow they seemed like they Clashed alot but I guess it makes the show better

  • Siskel owned Ebert big time.

  • Where's the damn cape! That's the whole point!

  • I've always loved Roger Ebert for his unconventional appreciation of movies. Not sure I agree with him on this one though.

  • @RyanHD1080 Yeah I know. It was a bit too unconventional (I mean, seriously he basically says that he dismisses the story, when Ebert usually considers the story as an integral part to the formula of a movie). Ah well, I have disagreed with him a few times, but I have always admired the way he articulates on his reasoning for liking movies. Not with this one though.

  • What was Roger smoking when he saw the movie ?

  • @sugreev2001

He gave the movie credit for what it was worth. But I would've liked to see him say with a straight face: "I recommend this movie."

  • Not sure why Siskel was confused by this film. Pretty simple plot.

  • I hated how he never wore the mask over his face. It was way more badass than his burnt face.

  • @MelanicDisaster Same here man!

  • This movie was terrible---I agree with Siskel. The main superhero's acting was so over the top it was laughable---and what a waste of Nicol Wiliamson.

  • yeah I admit the movie was horrible, but I love the animation

  • Siskel was like "really?, u liked this piece of shite, ok u just lost all credibility as a movie critic"

  • @fgvmochica50 I cant believe Ebert liked this---Wow.

  • The comics are the coolest, craziest shit ever! THe movie isn't that good....but the clown was great!

  • This film was released on the exact same year as the HBO animated series.

  • at 3:36 Siskel thought Ebert was talking about him.

  • Siskel was in top form here :)

  • Roger Ebert will always be the only person to ever like this movie

  • @DCEnigma i like it.

  • @bigboss25262 ok, we're up to two now

  • @DCEnigma Fuk u lol just kiding.

  • The original animated series from HBO was much better than this movie.

  • @MrPhukyou indeed

  • @MrPhukyou and animated series is masterpiece. no doubt!

  • @MrPhukyou, I have seen the HBO animated Spawn cartoon animated movie and it is better than the live-action 1997 film. The animated movie of Spawn is alot more violent and graphic than the film in 1997. Todd McFarlane MrPyou will be doing a reboot sequel as this was mentioned in an interview on Youtube. It will be like Ghostrider:Spirit of Vengeance with Nicolas Cage, and Idris Elba who was in Kenneth Branaugh's "Thor" film in 2011 last year. Spawn will be done right next time buddy.

  • so weird. ebert isn't often wrong post 80s.

  • DYNOMITE!.....DYNOMITE!

Michael Jai White should have thrown that script before he walked in the room.

  • siskel's the bald dude right, he's sickingly annoying with pessimistic views on movies

  • @rother011 siskel is right, the movie is utter shit

  • This movie is fucking terrible. I used to love it when i was a kid but it doesnt follow the comics. I like the cartoon a hellluva alot better.

  • @ghostbuster56 When I was a teenager when this came out, I thought it was lame then and I loved the comic.

  • @ghostbuster56, I went to see Spawn 14 years ago and I was only 20 years old at the time man. The movie seemed really good I looked at its Box Office gross and it made over $100 Million dollars but the film tanked very badly. The animated movie is 1,000,000 times better than the live-action movie but there are scenes of occult practices in the movie that you shouldn't watch. My baby brother has the animated movies on DVD and when you get to those scenes just skip it.

  • They need to reboot Spawn and make it more like the comics and animated show.

  • Ebet was wrong here. Clown is annoying, the effects suck, and I'm sorry, the plot is supposed to be the whole reason for a film.Without the plot, all you have is ugly shots of art. Spawn is one of the worst films ever. I agree with Siskel.

  • @NeoConnor1

They need to do a reboot of this movie like Batman Begins and would it work?

  • I keep hearing Todd McFarlene was to reboot the character. He wants it to be more like the Departed, and he wants Spawn to be more in the shadows, like a force of nature. He wants it to be a hard-R and scary film. Sadly, that is all I have heard about it. If I hear any more,I will let you know.

  • i agree with ebert about hell, we never see much of hell, i didnt really like this movie but the hell scenes along with the violater were great, more character develoupment of the knight guy would have helped me out

  • "You're comparing the visual style to Bosch? Well. Good luck!"

    Best truest Siskel quote ever.

  • I can't believe that haven't made another Spawn movie.

  • i did not like this film, all style no subtance, the cgi skyscrapper long cape was f%@&ing retarded. i spent most of the film wondering how they made john leguizamo that short with the make-up.

  • they do a sequel for ever single movie known to mankind but not this one...

  • @wataki2 They might, plans for a sequal has been planned for a while now

  • Siskel, shut your damn mouth and let Ebert finish talking.

  • @EliteF50 Unfortunately, neither man can follow your orders now...

  • I remember seeing this movie when it came out. It actually made me angry. The story was ham-handed and lame, as if grafted onto the special effects (rather than the f/x being in service to the story). The script had a very "...and then..." feel to it, and it was so clunky. And just when i thought it couldn't get any worse, a character at gunpoint actually uttered the line "You don't have the guts." Spawn is such a Batman rip-off - like getting a Gobot for Christmas instead of a Transformer.

  • I'm with Roger. I have watched this movie several times. Let me go dust off and watch my Spawn tape. WAIT! I bought the DVD version some time ago ... WHERE'S the popcorn!

  • @PlatinumProductionzz You mean the Crapcorn. LOL

  • haha they bicker alot

  • I gotta agree w/ Gene: it was all about special effects. If they'd focussed on and fleshed out the story more, it woulda been better. This was the first movie I ever went to and felt extremeley let down as I was leaving the theater. Kept thinking: "Todd McFarlane let them do THAT?!"

  • I hated this movie. Spawn looked cool but the movie was garbage. John Leguizamo was kinda cool I guess. Martin Sheen was wasted.

  • I enjoyed this. Stupid, but I love how 90s it is. A perfect night would be a double feature of this and the first Mortal Kombat. Awesomeness

  • yeah 1st niggaz....i cant believe roger liked this shit
