I preffer the original song from the Paul Rodger's album ''Cut loose'' which i have in vinyl and its a little bit difficult to bring it up in you tube.
Here's what kills me, tickets to see the Firm went on sale in Canada way back in 1986 and before i had a chance to buy them the concert got cancelled. I never did see them live but man i sure would have loved to have seen them. I wish they would have stayed together as i think they were really great. At least we got two albums out of them!!!!
They should've been huge! they made great music and yes...For gods sake...Paul Rodgers voice and Jimmy Page on guitar and Chris Slade on drums!! Freakin Awesome sounding!!!
This is some good stuff. BTW, I met Jason B. years ago at a radio station; he had hurt his wrist somehow and his band ended up canceling their gig here. He's a HUGE man. I used to have the ticket (which he autographed for me), but someone stole it on me. :(
This is some good stuff. BTW, I met Jason B. years ago at a radio station; he had hurt his wrist somehow and his band ended up canceling their gig here. He's a HUGE man. I used to have the ticket (which he autographed for me), but someone stole it on me. :(
You know when you are getting old when you remember with anticipation as a teenager the rumours of a group between Page and Rodgers forming,...and now almost 30 years later, and in your 40's, you are listening to it.
@doable1 You want "old"? My earliest rock memory is seeing The Beatles on the Ed Sullivan show. They made such an impression that I remembered the video when I saw it a couple of years ago on YouTube!
GREAT GREAT song!! And that voice is magical...so good beyond words. I saw The Firm once and I remember it being a fantastic show...seeing and hearing Rogers and Page together was SO cool!
I'll have to say I was not impressed with the show I saw. For one thing, Jimmy was so wasted they had to bring a chair on stage because he couldn't stand up, and me and a friend were pushed against the stage, and my friend had to be pulled out by security because she couldn't breathe. We spent most of the show at first aid....I'll enjoy on here and on cd; I will not pay to see them again in any capacity.
@kwindshawne You should see Paul Rodgers solo while you have the chance. He sings better today than ever. What happened to you at the stage likely will not happen again because most concerts in the US are reserved seating.
The tune SMOKES! Has a real scary feel an's just epic, that solo is seriously AMAZING! I have this live version from the Radioactive EP. It also has City Sirens live which I converted so I could have them on my iPod! I'd suggest the EP for any who can find it.
Also, I totally agree with deborahlz in wondering how they really didn't become HUGE??
Paul doesn't look anything like this anymore, he's got a fake piece on his head that's colored completely wrong (as well as his beard), I don't understand it. He is AWESOME! I don't know why he wants to look like someone who is trying so hard to look young.
Saw The Firm in'86-what was then known as Brendan Byrne arena(sp?)-East Rutherford,N.J.-fanatastic show-trivia question-who opened up for The Firm and who was the drummer of that band???
Oh, I was'nt doubting you, I was just saying,I saw them in Omaha,Neb. 1985, no opening act.. in 1986 Kemper arena KC,MO no opening acts, but i did hear he had opened for him, which led to a short reuinion with plant , page, Bonham(jason) in 1988
Chris Slade was the original drummer of the Firm, along with Jimmy, Tony and Paul. Chris also was the drummer for Tom Jones and the drummer for Manfred Mann, ( Do Wah Diddie) and Uriah Heep. He was with ACDC then Asia, and then Damage Control, he is now in California doing several gigs, and has been nominated for the Rock and Roll hall of fame..
@elcherner I also saw them at the Byrne Arena. Remember the laser beams all around Jimmy when he pulled out the bow & did his solo. That was awesome. I also remember he had to sit down as I guess his legs were real bad at the time.
I've seen Jimmy 3 times, Arms tour in 83, first firm tour in 84 and with Robert in 98
I got lucky and Jimmy burned each time
of course all of them were in the LA area
and he likes it here. I love this version Jimmy is tortured and his guitar is bleeding- wonderful passion. Yeah Paul used the outro from a Bad co song for this
one even on Mean Business but I forgive him.(he plagerized himself on piano)
You'll never find it on the internet, so I went ahead and made a quick 'video' of the original song for anyone that is interested...
As far as I know, Rodgers played all the instruments, and recorded it track by track. His solo is much shorter, starts around 3:50.
It's a great song, whatever version one prefers, and the whole Cut Loose album was very well composed and played too, worth a listen if you can find it.
Weird, everybody is praising Page's solo here, and I gotta say I have always preferred the solo from Paul Rodgers' solo version on the album Cut Loose. The liner notes say that Paul recorded all the instruments himself , and if that's true, he was actually pretty good with the guitar parts. Obviously, Page is a way more talented guitarists in every way, but I still think the Rodgers solo had better energy. It just started better and ended better, must have been the way it was composed I guess.
thanks for the comment.. I knew Paul had this on a previous solo LP, but i never heard it, but now I am going to try to find it .. I was always curious of how it sounded without page. (does paul play the solo?) and another guitar player
A superb performance! This song was originally included on Paul Rodgers' solo album "Cut Loose" from 1983. For some reason it was also included on The Firm's second album "Mean Business". I think Jimmy was running out of musical ideas these years and Paul R was the main songwriter in The Firm.
By the way, I saw The Firm's very first concert in Stockholm, november 1984. Jimmy was, sadly, a bit "off" and did not play so well.
I saw the band in 85 or 86 with Deep Purple. One of those shows of a lifetime. The best solo he has ever had post zeppelin. Same intensity as Since I been lovin you. I saw Plant - Page in the late 90's. I enjoyed the Firm concert much better.
They did not play Dazed and Confused. Jimmy did what was the later years Zeppelin version of the bow solo from Dazed and Confused. Their standard setlist didn't change much night to night. No Zeppelin and no Bad Co.
i'll never forget a friend of mine not very much into Page because he was into the 80's hair and metal bands. then he heard this solo and said "man! he's good". this is about the time when Page started to have a slight chinese look about him.
I would love to see a Firm reunion...and why the hell not? Journey is bigger than ever without Steve Perry for heaven's sake! I also agree the solo here is one of the most underrated of all time. Jimmy gets such emotion out of his guitar on this one! Firm in 2009!!!! (that is if Plant doesn't get off his ass and tours with Zep!)
I'm a huge Jimmy fan...I remember hearing the studio version of this when it came out and thinking that it was the best solo that Jimmy had done since Zep. He always knew how to structure his solos, to the point where even if he was sloppy, he still took you on a journey with it.
The Firm was one of my first concerts (I'm a huge Jimmy Page Fan)I saw the The Firm in Chicago it was on the "Mean Buisness" tour and It was one of the best shows I've seen. When Jimmy Page came out the crowd just went insane. I also seen Jimmy Page on the Outrider tour which was also Great. I hope to see him again.
I saw that tour in kansas city... even though it was a great show, the one a year earlier in oh=maha Neb. was alot better, cause i was a few feet from the stage :)
i saw the firm back in 84 in nj. whenever jimmy page comes out on stage the place always goes nuts. saw him with the blackcrows in nj also same thing, place wents nuts.after zeppelin when jimmy did his solo stuff it was always magic. this guy is a rock legend..
i remember my friend not caring much for Page until i played this for him. i had it on a large 45 with this and city cirens on one side and a long version of radioactive on the other side. still have it. don't play it anymore since the turntable is put up. i do get in my nastalgic moods and hook it up sometimes. i imagine i'm back in time and jammin' out to this on the turntable. miss the teenage years sometimes. what's happened to music these days?
in 1984, seeing the firm was just about like seeing zeppelin for many of us in the states... we knew we would never get to see Led Zeppelin like they were, but alot of us thrived to see page live.. this live show was an excellent show.. the 1986 tour (mean buisness) was not as good IMO
agree...i saw The Firm in Houston, Tx in '85 and '86...my first two concerts respectively...the 85 show blew me away. I was such a Zep Head at the time...5th row floor seats, Houston Summit...unbelievable experience. Not Zeppelin, but to me, a goofy 17 year old kid, it was as close as I ever got to the mighty zep.
saw both tours in ny and then 2 years later outrider came out was lucky to see the page at a small club(10/88) in ny called the ritz about 10 feet from him the whole show amazing
they opened up with closer.. then a few more off the first LP.. this song, Midnight moonlight, one of paul rodgers(another one other than this) Page did a violin solo, with lazer beams shooting up the bow, and dazed and confused type solo, they closed with everybody..... needs somebody, and it rocked the house...
The lyrics are certainly Paul's on Midnight Moonlight ... the tune itself was Jimmy's. It was kicking around from the Zeppelin days. At that time it was called Swan Song with bits of White Summer sprinkled in. If you have evidence to the contrary, please enlighten me! I'd rather be right than wrong in my postings. Although, I think I'm right in this case.
after i re-read my comment, i would understand how it looked confusing, i was trying to name the songs they played, this one... one song off Pauls solo, midnight moonlight, and many in between.. then the encore.. sorry if i explained it wrong.
this song here, is Paul rodgers, but they did another one that was not recorded with this band!
I have Paul's album "Cut Loose" although this live version elevates the song to a whole other level. I was fortunate enough to see Jimmy and Paul at the Garden on 12/9/83, and both US tours of the band in Philly. Yes, the set-list was peppered with other tunes not recorded by the band. I wasn't looking to pick a fight, just for info I might not have. I'm always looking for that. Thanks for the video!!!
were cool, i would had said the same thing after i re-read my 1st comment, but i know about swan song, and ect.. I just like to hear him play (jimmy) regaurdless... :p
listen to all you can from this band you will not be sorry!I saw them in Chicago at The Rosemont Horizon.1984-85?I don't remember the year, but I do remember the show! One of the best shows ever.Jimmy raising up from below the floor playing the piano. And playing his guitar with a bow, and it was one of the first shows i had seen with lasers.Sounds funny now but back then they were kinda new. ROCK ON!
I saw them in Omaha in March of 1985.. then in KC in 1986, the show in omaha was awesome cause i was only 50ft from the stage, but the show kicked ass, page did a violin bow solos, with laser lights all around. i would imagine your show in chicago was soon after.
Thank you for putting this and the other Firm vids on the tube....Awesome and underrated band. Some of Jimmy's prettiest playing is on those 2 Firm discs and of course Rodgers delivers on vocals and Slade and Franklin are great musicians!
I tried to enter a one character comment and youtube doesn't allow it. Let me answer the question posed by the title of the song as succinctly as I can... $ and that's the answer to nearly every question.
Money? lol.. What world do you live in? Money is the reason we can't live in peace? Not even close. How about religion? My God is better then your God. That is why we can't live in peace. Has nothing to do with money.

Saw them in 85 and 86 in Landover, Md. All were amazing and Tony Franklin was sick.

Yes, what a great band and a great tune. The message is current 20 years later, unfortunately. Simply magic. Page is the man.

Fantastic, would have loved to have seen them live, what sort of set-list did they play???

they opened up with closer.. then a few more off the first LP.. this song, Midnight moonlight, one of paul rodgers(another one other than this) Page did a violin solo, with lazer beams shooting up the bow, and dazed and confused type solo, they closed with everybody..... needs somebody, and it rocked the house...

Thanks for the video!!!

listen to all you can from this band you will not be sorry!I saw them in Chicago at The Rosemont Horizon.1984-85?I don't remember the year, but I do remember the show!
