You've got to be kiddin' me. Was Hancock trying to promote his RIVER album? I don't think Elvis was really ready to do this one. Hancock saved it though. After all he's got an album to sell.
Is there anything EC can't do musically. I don't think. He just keeps confirming what I've known many years ago. EC is a musical genius. Thanks for sharing this video.
Here's another attempt at trying to sound cool by singing a cover version of a song that cannot be surpassed. Skip this and go straight to Joni Mitchells original ¦¬D
Have to disagree wholeheartedly that Mitchell's original is a pop song. It's one of her best songs. Elvis does a very good version here, but that's to be expected.
@christophersheldon Not doggin on your personal preference. But don't you think Tina sings it like a pop song instead of giving it a jazz feel like EC or Melody Gardot?.....Or Maybe you hear jazz in Tina's voice....Just a question
i just listened to tina turner's version on the joni letters. what the fuck? she fits joni's meter almost perfectly. who wants to hear that in a jazz setting? i want to hear the phrases distended, bent and fitted to the singer, not a completely identical rendition. i think a lot of the people hating on this video really missed the point.
to the people crying about elvis's rendition, i'd like you to take on a song like this written in joni's vocal range with little to no experience in the loose, improvisational jazz field and come off even a quarter as good as elvis. tina had the patience of the studio behind her. i doubt elvis, herbie and the rest rehearsed more than once or twice before this performance.
Costello is a bit obsessed with jazz and blues black magic (a nice and polite way for me to say when someone has nothing creative to offer). I think it would be nice to wake up a bit. Joni Mitchell created a pop-rock song mainly.
@dancing0being agreed that the original is basically a pop song, but this version really isn't. i don't get the whole thing about "jazz and blues black magic".
underwhelming, Elvis, sorry but you are up against pretty tough competition here. George Micheal botched the phrasing. Tina Turner did a gorgeous husky rendition and Jonis original, well what can you say.
@spookychris1 I agree. Singing this song, no matter how cool Elvis tries to be, is undewhelming. In fact I say he is sounds like crap. He should of asked his wife to come on a sing it. Yes, you can write some pretty good tunes Elvis. But, as a singer .... stay as the host. The worst rendition I've heard. The band is awesome by the way.
Whoa-- I loved this version-- because Herbie has never been so inspired. He blows Elvis right off the stage. Long live Herbie-- a national treasure and our most supreme jazz piano virtuoso. That man SWINGS! And kudos to Elvis for a valiant effort. Note to Elvis: only Tina's genius and courage can contend with Herbie, but nice try! Nice showcase you have going there, by the way, you are an innovator of the pop medium-- and I do like your dynamics, but seriously... did you hear HERBIE?
the two worlds just don't meet for me never mind the smiles and hugs! nothing happened...everybody kept time and stayed in key ...underwhelming. Let m dangle!

Denzel Washington could easily play Herbie Hancock in a biopic. They look like they could be related.
