Nuclear scientists and politicians during the cold war are using Nash's theories, but he gets institutionalized for being paranoid schizo & thinking spies are watching him.. me thinks Nash was right about that.
John Carpenter called and he wants his music back. :) For those of you who, like me, don't see where this Documentary is going; do your self a favor and keep going. This is the foundation and it will really start to pick up steam in the second hour. The whole series is well worth your time.
next time a dude with a german accent suggests a marvellous new social/economic system, how about we all just say no? it never seems to turn out well.
There is also a great irony here. Hayek spent a great deal of his career arguing against central planners that it was not possible to simulate markets with mathematical models. He argued that Markets were not something that you could just play at they had to be real. That Curtis has the gall to associate Hayek with projects to re-engineer social institutions according to the very type of mathematical market model that Hayek spent his career opposing is just astonishing.
18:40 Game theory as a foundation for Hayek's vision? What utter bullshit. Hayek did not think that people are ''rational'' in the sense of game theory or that they need to be for society to be ordered & free. That is why you can find so many video's of him talking about tradition & social evolution. The whole point of Hayek's ideas about spontaneous order was that it does NOT need to be ''ordered'' by anyone. Technocrats trying to 'engineer' society is antithetical to Hayek & his liberalism.
@Conejito22 No, I understood fine, I was condensing essence of this line, 18:52 ''because the equations provided a scientific basis for the alternative vision Friedrich von Hayek had called for'' Hayek's attack on socialism & defence of liberalism were based on ideas concerning ''spontaneous order''.Trying to attain a Haykian spontaneous ordering through a managed or controlled order(simulated or not)is contradictory. If Curtis understood Hayek's alternative vision, he would have known that that
@Malthus0 I don't like people like you, who spend some hours in the university seat listening to their professors and consider they understood everything... Your stupid name shows your character as a self-proclaimed smart person... The bottom line of Game Theory is SELF-ORGANIZATION, or spontaneous order... And this spontaneous order came from rationality, which means SELFISHNESS of the individual...
blame edward bernay and his ilk .people as consumers is not natural ,,,they make you think you are an idividual cos you have 23-30 different choices of clothes, cereal ,football teams ,all sorts of foods but only 2 political parties(not
counting the independent candidates) ,why did we fight to get religion out of gevernment just to let corporations turn governmernt into a buisness..madness
At 15min in, game theory is fail and does not represent the selfish gene at all.
besides the fact that Dawkins says thats not even what he means by that.
Game theory isnt a mathematical representation of human nature.
In the example here, the rational choice isnt betrayal, because whether you get one or both, your life is on the line now, unless you kill him. But with that thought, if he betrayed you, you could kill him. Therefore the rational choice is cooperation and thats why most choose it.
wow this statements are of incredible importancy. When i study psychology i did read some of Laing theories but it should be more emphasis put on studying him. We were brainwashed with DSM classifications just what is the idea of control by state. Really good and really brave documentary! thanks x
So far a really interesting look at a few things we don't get over here in the US. Maybe "The Corporation" is close but we don't get this look into the thinking that started the ball rolling.
There is no "public interest" anymore. It's only "their" self interest that drives the world.

watching psychologists, sociologists and economists use mathematics is like watching chimps play with mirrors.

other people don't get up in the morning to save your ass, and people arent in government jobs to help other people.

@Malthus0 He doesn't say game theory is a foundation for Hayek's vision - you clearly haven't understood.
