sang this in HS... was my favorite piece of music that i got to sing. learning the pronunciation of the french was the hardest part... when you're the one on stage, its impossible to hear all the harmonies and melodies come together.. this was a real treat.
As someone who also has had quite a bit of choir experience, particularly with this song which I did in a summer workshop with college professors, it is by no means an easy song. If you add in the fact that the choir shown in the video isn't necessarily a professional choir, but sing for the fun and beauty of it, this performance is absolutely amazing.
@Olympicgardens The simple fact that people here ARE comparing them to professionals tells you they are pretty close. At least some people got fooled here....
A best solution for the musical joblessness. One piece - Two conductors.Wow!!! Precision: certainly you think 2 better that 1.Then... why not a conductor for every section ? Strings, wood-winds, brass, harp (4), chorus: a conductor for every section (4) : 8 conductors. But now we need...a conductor for this 8.Total: 9.What for a fantastic solution: job for so many conductors.AMAZING!!!...Unfortunatly, is not a joke ...this video, but the materialisation of the music's death!!
Maybe not the best performance from a technical standpoint, but a good performance because it dodges the problem that usually ruins this piece: it's not too slow, and it's not "dead."
The words are a rather earnest prayer that resolves in a statement of faith. Regardless of whether the singers believe it, that message is more "present" in this performance than some posted here on this site.
Except the french pronunciation in that vid is not horrendous, but wrong in several places... But if that made the trick for your audition i guess it's good enough :)
We sang this piece in the choir as well and I think this choir did it wonderfully. And I would NOT say that the sopranos are wrong. Maybe it's just because of the sound quality.
they were flat, but remember that for some reason this choir/orchestra is playing the piece one semi tone higher than original, so that's kind of an excuse. Does anybody has any idea why btw ?
I'm not extremely musical so i wouldnt be able to tell if it was off key or whatever but as an impartial normal person, it was performed lovely.....ly?
I guess if you consider the sopranos good or bad is a quite subjective thing (look at the comment below)
As for the two conductors though: This was done simply because of the layout of the location. It would have either ment to put the conductor very high and make it impossible for the chorus to look at him while looking into their sheets or leaving him where he is now, impossible for the orchestra to see. So in order to make sure everybody sees the conductor we just put in a 2. one
The sopran is false, off key in this piece, that's a fact, simply objective.
I also sing in a choir and I've already sang several type of stages and podiums. I even don't understand why the orchestra up and the choir down here? Sorry but this podium doesn't look so high.
And finally this piece is so beautiful but also very easy, doesn't need two conductors.
the choir was added for just 4 pieces. it was a concert of the orchestra. therefore they are on the main podium.
anyway, i respect your opinion. and i may add: neither the sopranos nor anybody else on this stage is perfect since all of them only do this out of fun and as a hobby.
nevertheless, i believe that your tone of voice ("OMG, pathetic") is not a way to give constructive criticsm but more a way to talk down on people you personally feel superior to because of your more advanced skills.
Don't be aggrived because of my honesty! I ment "OMG pathetic" simply for the fact of using two conductors for this kind of choral music (not for your skills). It's very unusual, and sorry but looks so amateur, so I advise not to do that next time. find another solution. trust me.
Using wo conductors because of a large set up is everything but amateurish. It's adapting to the configuration of a given concert hall, and requires coordination.
And if you are specialist, you must know that the light travels faster than sound right ? Maybe that will give you an hint about why if the stage is too wide it is necessary to use two conductors... But I'm sure you know all about that. You're not an amateur after all.

Do not compare it to professional musicians, please. I think it is so wonderful, that young people still perform great music even if not so perfect.

Declaro mi extrañeza ante la dirección dual de esta pieza , suena rara , falta harmonia de conjunto.

This is beautiful. I'm auditioning for district choir and this was so helpful for the pronunciation and melody. It's a beautiful piece.

Ô Christ, sois favorable à ce peuple fidèle
O Christ, show favor to your faithful people,
Pour te bénir maintenant rassemblé
Who now gather together to praise you
Reçois les chants qu'il offre à ta gloire immortelle,
Receive the songs they offer to your immortal glory
Et de tes dons qu'il retourne comblé
And your bountiful gifts to them.

Répands sur nous le feu de ta grâce puissante,
Pour out upon us the fire of your powerful grace,
Que tout l'enfer fuie au son de ta voix
That all hell might flee at the sound of your voice
Dissipe le sommeil d'une âme languissante,
Dispel the sleep of a languishing soul,
Qui la conduit à l'oubli de tes lois!
(The sleep) which leads to forgetfulness of your laws!

lyrics:
Verbe égal au Très-Haut, notre unique espérance
Word Most High, our sole hope,
Jour éternel de la terre et des cieux,
Eternal Day of the earth and the heavens,
De la paisible nuit nous rompons le silence,
We break the silence of the peaceful night:
Divin Sauveur, jette sur nous les yeux.
Divine Savior, cast your gaze upon us.
