XLR cables are symmetric cause you got 3 leads in it. It's supposed to neutralize signal influences that came from outside all the way at the end of the cable. It's some pretty complex electrical engineering stuff (using two lines makes signals from outside get in while using a third makes the sum of signals from outside zero at the end of the cable, so eliminates them). So for long distances XLR-cables are always better!

Just one comment I'd make on harddrives would be (If you're using a desktop), get internal harddrives instead of external, especially if you plan to save/load large amounts of data frequently. Internal hard drives, SATA2 (or 3) will be significantly faster and boost performance massively over an external USB counterpart.

Saying that I would reccomend an external drive for backups and like Dave says, backup frequently!

Also, I've been producing using Reason for a few months now and am hoping to upgrade to 6 within the next few weeks if i can, and I have to say, the advice about backing up your tracks is one of the most important things to do. Because Reason doesn't periodically save songs and I don't either, I've lost many songs to my laptop battery running out. Thanks!
