  • why killer queen?

  • amazing video! thanks

  • Lol @ the beatboxer

  • @TheCelticsman101 ya... fail... haha

  • Oh damn!

  • Amazing end to the solo with the high falsetto followed by the powerful yet not blaring mid range voice. That is a great way to keep everyone on their toes through the end of a song.

  • Goosebumps.

  • awesome!

  • what freak show would dislike this. This is amazing

  • @brettriley565 The stupid tween freak shows that probably thought that they copied Glee when Glee probably used this video for inspiration.

  • mejor que los de glee.

  • I'm in love with the soloists voice! this is amazing :)

  • I thought the Killer Queen part was really well thrown in hahahaha xD and that singer's amazingly talented :)

  • wow. that was stunning

  • I love how they broke into Killer Queen at the Guitar solo!

  • OOOO MY GOD!! :D eargasm at 0:17 seconds!!

  • OMG! glee got some good researchers! huh!

  • @vanzskull They do! In fact, Glee was originally intended to be acapella, and that is why did all sorts of research of college acapella groups.

  • flawless, fantastic, note perfect!

  • What on earth was Killer Queen doing thrown in there? xD

  • Our choir is doing this song for our Pops Concert <3 Great job!

  • did they intentionally switch keys in the middle, or just become off tune together? lol

  • I see Kenton, Kelley, Catherine lol n the sing offs socals reps here too

  • @ethong007 and Sarah

  • i think this is the only video ive seen that does queen justice, great job!

  • Glee totally took this from the SoCals... was at the performance.

  • Speechless.

  • I love this song, and they did it justice!!!

  • Out Frickin Standing. I love a capella, but these guys really nailed every aspect.

    Five thumbs up.

  • eisenei, try live vocal performance yorself and then post it , so we can all see how wonderful you are. i'm betting you can't hold a candle to this.

  • The soloist is flat and indulgent.

  • @eisenei Indulgent, yes. Flat though? Really? Try again.

  • 00:15 - 00:30 perfection! after this its suck

  • I loved that Killer Queen bit. It was great.

  • 2:10

that "guarenteed to blow your mind" move was awesome

  • Somebody to love - Killer Queen ?

  • Thumbs up!

  • Wow... That is probably the best cover of that song I've ever heard... I am a hardcore Queen Fan, and rarely like a cover of this song.

    I loved this one.

  • They should've had a bigger crowd

  • wowwwwwwwwww :D LOVE IT!!! gave me the chills and goose bumps haha

  • this guy's voice is sex. and i'm a dude

  • @PhilFromSchool haha

  • we have this ?... i never knew about this .. lol

  • I thought it was Justin Bieber's "Somebody To Love" ... Sorry for being a Belieber. >.>

  • Aww good job you guys :)

  • :) Very very nice :)

  • THEY ARE GREAT! the lead is superior & the back ups are up to his vocals so that's it sounds better by billions than any other version i've heard before! lol

  • yall are right up there with glee great performance

  • What is the guy leading the song called???? He's genius.

  • @kenkenka

Payson Lewis - also on NBC's "The Sing Off" with the SoCals

  • Great singing!!! I really enjoyed it

  • thanks for posting .. really enjoyed this

  • did glee pay you guys?!

  • Oh my god I just fell in love with you guys! You're incredible

  • I believe this is still the highest scoring performance in ICCA history, right? If so, well deserved.

  • AMAZING..... Soloist= singer from heaven..... wow

  • I am sure I am not the first one that heard the "Killer Queen" sample at 2:03, but I really liked it. The dude can sing.

  • @Jmunny1237 The main soloist (Dan Payson-Lewis) also arranged this entire song!

  • i love this... great singing!!!

  • Go Dan!

  • haha i think glee is just stealing their songs from a cappella groups on youtube.

    btw, this is really good.

  • EXECELLENT! Best I've seen/heard on YouTube. Seriously talented performers!

  • Hi,

Parabéns pelo excelente arranjo e harmonia de todas as vozes do coral.

A melhor versão de Somebody to love por aqui no Youtube.

Congratulations and fraternal hugs to all,

  • that was bloody brilliant!!!!

  • i realllly like this

  • Remix with Don't Stop Me Now? Haha.. it's a pretty good performance, but nowhere near the real thing, of course.

  • ...meanwhile Th3seguys are standing back stage left going..."oh shit! We're on next"

  • wow. super awesome. where could u find the satb for this? very nice!!!

  • this is amazing.

  • AWESOME JOB!!!!!!

  • LOVE this arrangement and the performance!! Can anybody tell me the arranger's name or where I can order this particular version? I want to perform it with my a cappella choir and all I can find is the sheet music from Glee. Thanks!!

  • @jeaner617 -

Arranger and lead singer, Dan Payson-Lewis

  • the best choir performances i've heard here on youtube! well done! is there a chance to get the partition? wanna sing it in my choir!

  • u have a AWESOME!!! voice

  • the soloist is fantastic. the way he uses his head voice for the high notes is just out of this world!!

and the harmonies are so tight! FANTASTICCCCCC

  • that was sick! way to go!!!

  • did glee just see this is and decide to use it?

  • yes. :)

  • @hckyplr588 no the original version by Queen is similar to this too, just not completely a cappella haha

  • favorite a capella arrangement ever! this is perfect!! <3

  • i'm like honestly in love with the lead singer.

  • WOWOWOWOWOW THE SOLOIST IS ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!!!

i'm speechless, i was not expecting such an OUTSTANDING voice! i had goosebumps throughout

  • Who is the soloist?

  • Dan Payson-Lewis

  • gets very fast in the end but it's really nice!

  • Ah! I saw you guys at the finals in NYC! (I have a friend in Purple Haze) I'm serious, I went in expecting something suckish and boring...and came out loving a capella. You were AMAZING!

  • wow!! it's like glee performance of somebody to love!!! and the colors are the same :/

  • If you're mildly freaked out by how much this sounds like Glee...and the fact that they wore blue outfits like this on Glee...remember that this video was shot over a year before that Glee episode ever aired... :)

  • @TheOrigMac HAHHAHAH thank you TheOrigMac! People seriously need to realize this.

  • @TheOrigMac : Which makes it even freakier! They even have a girl that looks like Quinn.

  • @TheOrigMac why is everything always related to gler!?

  • @TheOrigMac Soooo Glee copied SoCal...? Right on.

  • @TheOrigMac i think glee copied this a bit.

  • @wise0women As TheOrigMac said, this was done a lot earlier.... meaning Glee may have taken the idea from the SoCal VoCals.......

  • @wise0women

glee producers and music directors do constantly look for performances like this to make the show authentic. If you have recently seen the teenage dream performance the voices of the chorus singing behind the lead is the beezlebubs from the sing off as well!

  • @wise0women except like... not incredibly overproduced... lol =P

  • @wise0women It's an insult to compare this to Glee. For them to sound like Glee they'd have to be autotuned to sound like robots.

  • dan went to my high school, he was a great singer then and now. if he hasn't yet, he better audition for american idol. he would go very far.

  • i wish they won so much.

  • Absolutely Amazing!

  • this is so beatifull and the acting aswell

    i am crying here XD

  • they are wonderful.

  • better than glee xD

  • I wanna see what one of these groups would do with a guitar solo. So far they haven't done that yet.

  • Do a search for "The Sing Off Journey" here on YouTube -- the video is titled "AWYWI/OA/DSB". It's the SoCals (the sub-group of SoCal VoCals members/alumni who competed on the Sing Off on NBC back in December). David Rakita (who was in the SoCal VoCals in this video) does a pretty cool guitar solo on "Don't Stop Believin'"!

  • @TheOrigMac I looked that up. He looked really familiar. Does he sing with the Westminster Chorus (Barbershop Champions)?

  • @apr28 yep -- he does indeed!

  • @jsmith100290 theyre an acappella group they dont use instruments

  • dans hot

  • socals definately should of won!

  • Wow. o.o

  • i am not sure if it is just the cold temp in here, or the music but i had goose bumps all through out the song amazing singer he has a bit of the great Freddy mercury in him. well done

  • The lead singer has one of the best voices I've heard in a long time :)

  • luv the lead socolist!

  • you guys rule try american idol u could win and hes right u guys got robed or try Americas got talent as john cena say NEVER QUIT!

  • I would have voted for u guys a million times if u guys had gotten in the finals of The Sing Off!!

u guys are amazing! Go Nota! they deserve it next after u guys!

  • Dan (that's the lead singer, right?) has such an AMAZING voice!!!

  • I AM IN LOVE WITH DAN !

  • You guys got robbed on The Sing-Off! You are all amazing!

  • I wish the Socals had won!

  • @CoveredByRegret They should have. I haven't figured out any reason they did not.

  • maraaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!! super iper tensoo!

  • OMG THIS IS AMAZING!

  • You all are AMAZING and should have won the "Sing-Off" show!

  • You guys are real champion on The Sing Off!

  • thats not the same beatboxer right?

  • no, the guy holding down the vocal percussion in this video is Will Harris. The guy on the Sing-Off is Brian Malony. He had already graduated from the VoCals when this video was shot.

  • i was confused about all that....they said the socal vocals on the show were graduated from the original group, so i thought they were like from the late 90's and now i hear that some of them are still in the group. are they mostly 07-08-09 grads?

  • The VoCals were founded in 1996; there are no "original" members participating in the Sing-Off (although several of us got to be in the audience screaming at them!) Only one of the "SoCals" (Kelly Jakle) is a current member of the VoCals. Dan Payson-Lewis, Allie Feder, Lucy Jackson, David Rakita and Joe Sofranko are all 1-2 years out of the group (all of the above were part of the ICCA champs group in 2008). The other two "SoCals" (Ryan Alvarez & Brian Malony) are both roughly 6-7 years out.

  • @TheOrigMac If this was such a taelnted and deep group: Why didn't they get more people from all of the years past and present? Even if they had 2 or 3 more people they would have been stronger and won the competition. With only 8 people it's hard to cover everything and they should take advantage of being deep since none of their female soloists were amazing

  • Why is the C in vocals captilized?

  • to emphasize that it's not "vocals", like the voices on a record. "VoCals" rhymes with "SoCal" -- so it's to emphasize the mispronounciation.

  • If there songs are usually performed with a larger group, and they weren't limiting themselves to graduates from the last 3 years, i don't understand why they only went with 8 people (one of whom has gastro reflux disease)? I think most people would agree that only 3 women and 8 total in a coed group is a little thin. they might have been on key and had more power with 10-12

  • I LOVE THE SoCal Vocals! Break a leg on The Sing Off!

  • best of luck on the Sing Off! SoCals deserve the win in my opinion :)

  • I just saw you guys on The Sing Off, definitely bookmarking you and showing you to everyone! Amazing!

  • I saw you guys on The Sing-Off! All the best on the competition!

  • THIS GUY HAS AN AMAZING VOICE

  • ALMOST made me cry!

  • Is it just me or does it seem like Glee went to do a little research at USC before getting its acts? You guys and Reverse Osmosis. The resemblance is uncanny. Except no autotune! Go USC!!!! (Fight on!!!!!!!!!!!)

  • They are both covering queen, they both didn't change much from queen's original arrangement. That's probably why you are hearing a resemblance.

  • @alortez : Okay, I just watched Glee's version again, and this version is just similar enough to make you say, "Hmmm, that's kind of ironic," but not enough that you'd think Ryan Murphy got the idea from USC or ripped them off or anything.

  • Watch Dan Payson-Lewis (the soloist) and the SoCal VoCals Monday, Dec 14th on NBC's the Sing-Off!!!!!!!

  • WOW!!

  • I say YEAH!!! But mind the tempo, guys!!! And PUMP that killer Queen segment UP!! OOOOON WITH THE SHOW!

  • you guys are really expressionised which is great to see i always love expression the vocals are great too!

  • O:

    all im saying .

  • that was a little...amazing!

the soloist is gonna go far. :)

  • BRAVO! Wow as they said before, you are the real Glee [ My standing Ovation! ]

  • gleek though I know this was done first :))))

  • sounds VERY INCREDIBLE AND GREAT

  • major props!!!!!

  • YEAH KILLER QUEEN IN THE MIDDLE!

  • the lead singer is awesome.. =p

  • You guys are AWESOME!!! :D

  • The lead guy here really did this song justice. When you sing Queen you just have to go big or go home.

  • fuck glee, thats just a show, this is actually LEGIT(: you are the real glee<3 haha SoCal Vocals<33

  • Super cool performance....! Where I can find this arrangement????? Please let me know...!

  • This was arranged by vocalist, Dan Payson-Lewis...the Glee arrangement is different.

  • Also, I loved the Killer Queen bit in there.

This is honestly the best video I can find of an a capella group doing this song. Amazing work <3

  • This is COMPLETELY amazing. Ps: The kid with the solo will be my husband some day. Just thought i would say that.

  • did glee buy this arrangement from your group?

  • Arrangement and vocals by Dan Payson-Lewis

  • Wow! Amazing! I'm in awe :)

  • This is completely amazing. I agree with lots of the other comments. I love Glee and they did it great, but you guys did this amazing version 100% live with no instruments and that's what is truly impressive.

    Awesome.

  • In response to that comment about the black girl from Glee having way more soul during the ending solo bit, that show is heavily edited, mixed, and auto-tuned whereas this performance is 100% live. On top of that, Glee is not even really a cappella... All of the bass and drums are actually real bass and drums, whereas the SoCal VoCals have human beings making all these sounds. And that's not to mention that the ending of the Glee version is totally overblown... Goooo VoCals!!

  • This was really good, but after watching Glee perform it, the solo "somebody to love" towards the end was so anticlimactic compared to Mercedes'. But then again, that girl has some serious soul.

  • The way they did it is the way Freddie Mercury did it in the original song.

  • IK i was like HOLY SHIT that girl can BELT it out!

  • Re: the SoCal VoCals ending being anti-climactic compared to the Glee ending: The VoCals' version is 100% live & 100% voices--including all the drum and bass parts. Glee's version is edited, mixed, and auto-tuned to no end & is also accompanied by an electric bass & drums at the very least. Forget about the ending how overblown and overly dramatic is. You can prefer the soulful Glee ending over this one, but there's no denying that the VoCals rock this song from start to finish.

  • Yeppers. Glee totally stole your arrangement.

    YOU'RE AMAZING.

  • i agree

  • I have watched your video in the past and loved it. Then I saw tonight's episode of Glee and was blown away by the similarities. Between the arrangement and the costumes. You should be very proud that you have been respected enough to be imitated. Good job. I love it.

  • Indeed. Imitation is one of the highest form of compliment. =3

  • LINDO!
