I'm sorry but everytime I see Fencing it reminds me of that Part in Indiana Jones when that dude is doing all that crap with his sword and Indiana just shoots him.
@L33tHackzor I reckon he's just being more explicit about the purpose of a parry maneuver when he mentions the "defensive parry", rather than implying there's such a thing as an "offensive parry". I guess a "beat" is the nearest actual maneuver to anything that can be described as an "offensive parry".
I'm fine and all with him trying to teach people basic things (I'm actually a beginner myself), but I think that when it's just this guy alone and no partner, I couldn't make heads or tails of this. I know enough to understand what he's saying, but if I didn't know this already it wouldn't help.
Wow, so many experts here. I'm indeed blessed to draw from the knowledge of so many fencing masters. There's nothing bogus or even poor about this guy's technique. It's intended as a beginning lesson. Give the kid a break.
@evannalynchje Again, I'm blessed to have you to tell me what's good and bad technique. Who cares? He's teaching basic techniques. He's not doing quantam physics. There's nothing wrong with his explanation. I'll keep my eyes peeled for you in the next Olympics though since you're so good at this.
at first i laughed at these but then i thought... well these videos can be useful. i can make my students watch them as motivation to train harder. because if they don't, they will have terrible technique like this guy
wow. ok. u may be making this for beginners, since more of them would like to learn how to feint, but i was looking forward to some advanced tactics. *when feinting, u can also change from ur line from 6 position to 4. this gives ur opponent no other choice than to attack in ur 6 line. this is also feining when trying to provoke ur opponent to attack u.
depends, if u want them to be world champions i wud start at 5 years old. gennerally the kids lessons are for 5 or 6 years old to 13 year olds. hope tht helped
Cutover... Sorry for commenting twice, but I'm commenting as I watch. I have NEVER heard anyone call it a "cutover". Coupe, I believe, although I most likely got that spelling wrong.
Cutover would be the English translation, as... "coupe" means cut. Disengagement is also "degagement".
But as fencers know, some words are "kept" even when using *English* w/ fencing (such as 'riposte')... but the word "parry" is the English translation for "parer".
Aussi, nous avons "counter-attack", mais, c'est contre-attaque a la francaise.
So... when speaking in English about the "parer avec riposte", we should TECHNICALLY say "block & answer" or "parry & answer".
If you establish the right-of-way, then feint, and they counter-attack, there is no need to parry their counter-attack. That's overkill. If you finish your action, you get the touch. In fact, with the more advanced fencing, if you try to parry, they will most likely get you anyway because of the hesitation of your attack, and the touch is more likely to be called against you.
wow...please dont post anymore videos. "cutover?" where did you learn how to fence?.... Fencing for dummies?....idiots guide to fencing? just embarassing
Why should any foil fencer in the world parry a counter-attack??? If your opponent rectas to your feint by doing a counter-attack, you just continue your attack (make an attack out of your feint).
Anyway these movements dont look too professional to me...
They shouldnt, if they have a good director and have point in line, but if the counter attack comes before the complete extension on the part of the feint a lot of directors will call the counter the attack. which is why having untrained directors (which you always will short of nationals and FIE) sucks.
I think he means beat but it's just in case you have someone like him directing the bout...then again he'll probably call it the other person's parry...
Oh I love the modern age where someone can look up an article on wikipedia and become an "expert" in five minutes. THis man has obviously never fenced before.
No... Foil used to be my first weapon, I have my own steam and electric foils, I fence epee and THEY can leave their mark, foils are just a wee bit bendier!
A coupe, or cut over, is to reach over a parry to land the touch, and its still made with the pointed end. Youre correct, there is not necessarily a cutting edge, and the move is made with the point, but irish dancer is not wrong either.
NO a foil is not a training sword, it is a gentlemans weapon used in the early days there are actual foil competitions I think that a foil is better than epee and sabre
why on earth are you putting your mask on are you trying to protect yourself from low flying insects. and this is "expert" village not "some guy who gives a half hearted attempt at a lesson with all the wrong language village"
Poor. An attack to draw a counter attack to parry in second intention is a false attack not a feint. A feint draws a parry. Also "you feint, they parry and miss, you come around for the counterattack?" He doesn't have a clue.
feint- a simulated thrust to draw an opponents parry. I have always differentiated based on the opponents response. I guess it's a difference in semantics. I still disagree with Mr. bogus because of his monologue. I apologize for and retract my statement of his not having a clue.
for those people that have never seen quality fencing (high national and international level) this is what it is about. this man disgraces the sport by calling himself an expert.
The video instead is more about a very basic tactical application of a feint of why you need to feint and also what to do when your feint is successful. I guess I thought the video was geared for more advanced students while it is more for beginner students. From the thumbnail I thought it was going to be a video on Golubitskiy.... ah ahaah!! (Comment Part 2 of 2)
i think it is an excellent idea to post these sort of things, and i hope that there will be a hostile free environment for questions. Because i was curious, why would you need to parry if they go for a counter attack. Surely it would be better to just continue the attack and keep right of way giving you the point?
no but the point of the feint, is that you draw their parry and then dissengage.if they start extending the arm, and then they go for a counter, and you go to parry there counter, you will mostlikely not make it, but also you will have lost the right of way.
