  • The First time I heard this song, the late great Chris LeDoux was singing it, after that nothing comes close, not even Emmylou or Mr. Matthews. Sorry.

  • I just don't... like Dave Matthew's voice.

  • One word.......WOW

  • beautiful tribute to the best.

  • make it 61

  • I really like this. it puts an interesting feel to the song. I approve.

  • Hey Dave, how bout thank you (x3) Lefty Frizzell.

    Dave's response: "Lefty who?"

    Me: SMH...

  • @gluckme thank him for what? he didn't write it

  • @MrPittsSox

I know. But he had the first recording on it in 1959. If he had never recorded it, maybe nobody would even know about this great song. I guess we shouldn't thank george strait for Amarillo by Morning (since he didn't write it), nor patsy cline for crazy (since willie nelson wrote it..). It's just a comment. don't look too far into it.

  • @gluckme Fair point about Lefty recording it first. But, it would be a little silly to thank him at a tribute to Johnny Cash, of course he would thank Cash. It obviously was the version that inspired him. Feel free to dive into this comment, lol. Anyway, it is one of my favorite songs!

  • @MrPittsSox

Fair enough. and great comeback, too, btw. Handled it without getting nasty. definitely one of my favorite songs (the lefty version, though... haha). cheers.

  • Damn this is good!!!!

  • ahmazing. both of them. emmylou of course is an angel. but dam that dave matthews is talented too.

  • @twowaystreet101 few covers meet the standard of the original. give dave a break, this was when he was still tryin' to make it big.

  • First heard this over 10 years ago, and it still is my standard version for this song. This could be Emmylou's most stunning harmony vocal ever. I know that's a tough one to analyze.

  • No woman, on earth, is better than EmmyLou

  • @Andrea62ish ......true, true,true....Angelic

  • make that 57 on 29 aug 2011

  • There should be a movie about Dave Matthews, starring Tom Hanks :D

  • 00:00 "Urine their devotion" :D

  • I love jerry garcias best

  • ra376361b- r u serous? the soul just oozes out of both dave and emmylou.

  • of all the performances of "Long Black Veil" this is the worst. Please, every alternative on the right of your screen is superior to this phony souless treatment. Really?

  • i was introduced to Emmylou's singing in 1983 and have loved her ever since.

Long Black Veil was one of the first songs I played on the guitar 47 years ago and still do.

  • lefty's version is still the best.

  • Have i mentioned that im in awe, and completely obsessed with , and every other lovely glowing adjective that is not at the tip of my tongue, for this darling, fabulously talented man, at hte moment ....(or several moments, at least)

  • Lefty Frizzell recorded "Long Black Veil" before anybody else. And his version is still the definitive one.

  • It is amazing how much better he does the song now! And this version is great!

  • I was at this show as a guest of Emmylou Harris. What an awesome night of entertainment! This song was my favourite of the lot

  • not a huge fan of dmb, what a great version of this tune!!

  • not a huge fan of dmv, what a great version of this tune!!

  • I LOVE Johnny, but this is my favorite version.

  • such a sad song

  • HONKY! C&H!!!!!!! SUCKS!!!!!!!

  • John Voight is a right wing shit.

  • @jasperyirl / so????? that is nothing to do with this beautiful song!!!!

  • ahh, if I could sing a duet with her, I would die happy!

  • the jon anderson version has more soul

  • Matthews is an amazing talent (along with his band of course.).. they are sweet and can truly kick some rhythmic ass. Emmylou... she is so so .....yeah! My Son does the Matthews version of this song during his shows.... he rarely does covers .....buthis one gets applause like mad. (voight?...wtf!)

  • Matthews is an amazing talent (along with his band of course.).. they are sweet and can truly kick some rhythmic ass. how in the fuck did this prick Jon Voight get in the picture?..... he is pure scum... now back to Emmylou... she is so so .....yeah! My Son does the Matthews version of this song during his shows.... he rarely does covers .....buthis one gets applause like mad.

  • beautiful! I like how Dave really makes the song his own. Just beautiful

  • Not loving Dave Matthews so much, but Emmylou has a haunting voice. Listen to it resonate!

  • @sheenque I think the opposite. She seems to go off on her own. You got the haunting part right. *shivers*

  • gotta love it

  • friends of mine who consider themselves noncountry fans have been turned on to country music since watching this video, emmylou and dave manage to bring a classic to a new audience, and i want to say thankyou to you both,i love it!

  • Fantastic song...but i'm sorry, Emmylou looks like an evil witch.

    Just sayin'.

  • this song is so,so good...........and ruined by so,so many

  • @roman14032 Not by these two, in my opinion.

  • hot hot hot.....DM is frickin hot

  • Can it get any better?

  • Chillingly good.

  • Nobody beats Rick Dankos vocals on The Band's version. Check it out...

  • @MrHerbsmann amen brother, the bands take on that song is awesome

  • I love Dave Mathews. So much ,

  • Lefty Ffrizzell did it better

  • Love this song, it always brings me to tears. Especially The Band's version. That's my favorite.

  • @jbroek1994

"Nobody knows, nobody sees.... nobody sings this song like Rick fucking Danko!"

  • @jerrygarcia099 Indeed man. Rick Danko is a hero! Love his voice!

  • uh this song was covered by all the greats, who wrote it? I got david allen singing this song and it is SO great. Should I up load that version?

  • When was this?

It's amazing how clear the dave matthew band sound is and how perfect she accompanies this.

  • Crazy awesome version of this song!

  • Dave an't much to look at, but he boy can play. Now Emmylou, my god, what a vision and voice

  • @dougcapehart Awww man Dave is super sexy =P Don't hate.

  • John Anderson and Merle Haggard did this one also, that was insane, i think it was on John's Wild and Blue album

  • He should thank the writer of this song..not johnny cash

  • @thestaple8 he thanked Johnny Cash because this show was a tribute to him. Read the description of the video.

  • Mike ness did the best version. The end

  • @sachi808 I got a david allen coe version that will blow u away. I would like to hear Mike ness though

  • dave, please don't die

  • That's so beautiful, it breaks my heart to hear it....

  • the 'NEW RIDERS OF THE PURPLE SAGE " did a great version of this song

  • I don't believe there is but a half doesn't artist that can do covers worth a damn here's two of them on the same stage.

  • He should have listened to Rick Danko sing this.

  • 52 people have no soul...

  • @bluessiren78 You're kidding. This totally sucks compared to Johnny's version.

  • @bluessiren78 That's such a rude thing to say.

  • @blewj That's just the dumb new thread happening. If anyone posts that they don't like said video, we say X amount of people have no soul, or don't dig it. Nothing personal!

  • Lefty's version was the original and is still the best in my opinion.

  • @papdrugio it's a johnny cash tribute, that's why he thanked Johnny Cash, probably not just for the song, but for everything.

  • Am I the only one who cringed that he thanked Johnny Cash instead of Lefty Frizzell? I love Cash, but Frizzell is the original artist.

  • @papadrugio if you read the description of the video you will understand why he thanked Johnny Cash. It is a tribute concert to him after he died, lots of musicians played songs Johnny Cash recorded. Plus I'd be willing to bet Johnny Cash made this song way more famous than Lefty ever did.....

  • @jjj5278, @chrisspike

Point taken. I didn't read the description.

  • @papadrugio Actually Lefty was the first guy to record it, but he didn't write it.

  • LOL TO YOU SCIONTCDUDE I guess your name says it all. I am sure you must drive a Scion and were trutle necks. I am also sure you and your boy friend probably swing by Starbucks every morning to get some foo foo coffee. When you get to the office you are wiping something off you lips but it isnt cream from the coffee. O I almost forgot your listening to dave mathews in the car as well.

  • @Copperheadroad1 off by a bit ..i use to own scion tc back when they first came out i now own a 92 civic si hatch with a b16 engine swap full cat back intake header skunk 2 full coilover suspension ..im not gay and i dont own any turtle necks at all ...we all have our opinions and mine is this chick cant sing i dont know how she is "famous"

  • This song always makes me cry...

  • Love this song- Love you Dave but Emmylou makes the song- this is the best version by far!

  • Wow...that was beautiful!

  • I cant belive that emmylou would sing with this bunch of untallented, unoriginal buch of fags.

  • @Copperheadroad1 lol u know whats funny emmy lou or w/e her name is sucked balls she was just talking but with a higher pitch not singing..now dave matthews he is the one with talent

  • @sciontcdude whats a gobshite like you doing commenting on country music, your on the wrong channel, spongebob runs all day keep watching!!!!!!!!!!

  • Emily Lou has that "high lonesome" sound. Wonderful.

  • Who better to cover Johnny cash than Dave Mathews!! Two amazing musicians

  • Anyone know if this version is on any cds?

  • justin bieber was here..

    50 times!

  • amazing.

  • nobody knows but the man in black but thanks for sharing

  • Nice video, keep it up. Watch for BRANDON JAROD new music, OCT. release. Awesome!

  • ya'll are all crazy

  • the harmony, the harmony, the harmony ... i cannot help it she always touch my soul.

  • glad to see Dave give credit to J.R. Cash...all props go to THE MAN from DYESS, ARKANSAS

  • love this song! love this version of it!

  • i love this song so much

  • holy shit this sounds horrible! A complete disgrace to the song.

  • sometimes Dave looks like a bloated 12 yr old boy with aspbergers

  • @sstyblo / i think that you may be the one with asPergers/ let's see you give a better version/ don't think so!!!!!

  • Classic country with the Dave Matthews touch. I have always loved this song.

  • I love dave but this version sucked balls

  • Greets from Michigan!

  • Dave and Emmylou!!!

    Two great Voices

  • I had no idea this was a Johny Cash song, I always thought it was a DMB song. never been a huge fan of the song to be honest.

  • dave matthews is the man! saw him live a few months ago... it was just awesome

  • Great Voices

  • I'LL be your huckleberry. ELH makes anyone she sings with sound like a million bucks i've always loved her shes my jenny

  • I like Dave M. but Emmylou Harris makes everyone better when she sings backup.

  • simply beautiful!

  • I think this version is better lol it's faster and his voice sounds a little better.

  • Emmy Lou Harris makes EVERY man look like a complete noob

  • Why no close ups of emmylou ?????!!!!!! I sure would love to exchange some body fluids with her !

  • maybe she requested no close ups. Because she is old. she is sexy i'll give her that. but maybe vain. or self conscious. i like her. alot

  • For a great version check out Mick Jagger with The Chieftains.

  • Garcia did one hell of great version of this song late in his career. not sure if it was with DG or solo. blows this away.

  • no one sings harmony like emmylou harris!

  • no one can come close to the wolfetones when singing this song

  • @kookes100 u must be tone deaf or stupid or both

  • @jimmyriddle100 have u even listened to the wolftones version u halfwit get back to me when u have

  • @kookes100 when you grow up hopefully you will understand that the wolfe tones cant sing country music or bluegrass,I would suggest you listen to the JOHNNY CASH&JONI MITCHELL version..!!!

  • awesome

  • I think matthews needs to stick to whatever music (not country) he sings

  • @Af4408 you sir, do not know what you are talking about. Although JC is remembered as a country artist, his style and musicianship most certainly spanned many different genres (Lefty is much more of a literal country artist but LBV is/was a significant differentiation from his regular honky tonk country). And although this is a 'country' song, it is not country in the modern sense that I believe you are implying. It is a country ballad influenced by the sounds of country soul, folk and gospel.

  • Agreed. Where was Emmy up close? Great rendention however. Smooth.

  • i love this song

  • It's all about Dave Matthews, not the song. Posing and feigned feeling. Emmylou and Dave Matthews don't sound good together either. I would bet that Dave thinks Johnny Cash did this Wilkin/Dill penned song before anyone when actually Lefty Frizzell did it first in 1959. If you want to feel a cold chill listen to Lefty's version. It is still by far the best. Nobody will ever come close.

  • @IStoleYourPotatoes - Agree Lefty did it best, disagree with nobody coming close - listen to Jerry Garcia, Tony Rice, David Grisman's version on "the Pizza Tapes".. it is close

  • @IStoleYourPotatoes I would bet you Dave knows more about music and its history then you are giving him credit.

  • @IStoleYourPotatoes I would bet Dave knows more about music and it's history then you give him credit.

  • This is how music was meant to be played.

  • Emmylou is the best collaborator ever, everyone she works with is better because of her presence. I love this woman!

  • @TheGreatGonzoMan You are right, Dave was right to say thanks before the song for having her up there with him, she has got one of the best and unique female voice in country, what harmony, and yeah, what about the close up of her instead of all Matthews, WTF, stupid production people.

  • long black veil is lefty frizzell's song johnny cash just covered it

  • I think they both did a great job here, beautiful. Emmylou has a sung a lot of duets with a variety of singers, besides singing on her own albums. Great harmony.

  • Emmylou Harris is always full of surprise. One best thing about her is her shy appearance instead of her big name in the industry. And she is always the hottest woman.

  • how do you put emmy lou harris on stage and ask her to sit in the background like that ... thats shit music

  • classic video

  • please get some class

  • To my brother danny ,,,,,,,,way sick bro hope u enjoy

  • Dave Mathews is by far the most boring man in show business.

  • @tomthefunky this for sure is the wrong place to say that man, dave matthews is one of the most interesting men in show business maybe if you took a little listen to songs such as ants marching, american baby, why i am... just to name a few and maybe your eyes will be opened to the creativity that dave has, or maybe you are just too nieve to perceive and maybe your perception of exciting has been spoiled by the likes of lady gaga or the black eyed peas even

  • @Potatomanbrad

hE IS BOOOOOORING, And question, why he is "whining" while he sings, not in this one, but almost everywhere..He maybe think its cool....well its not... Long live johnny cash, and emmylou....And i hate lady gaga, blaa blaa......Johnny cash and dave ...u should spell their name in same day ... Cash example was in other league .Cant help it, tried to listen but i caaaant...in every live song, dave just moans and aaargh! Look examp. lennon tribute... OMG!!!

  • @mynthon11 i personally dont like the lennon tribute myself but listen to a song like "eh hee" no one but dave has the talent to preform like that and make it enjoyable to the general populace, and i dont think i know what you mean by moaning?

  • I LOVE hearing him sing this on the live albumn Listener Supported! THANK YOU FOR IT!!!

  • Very nice remake..

  • for my brother danny love u bro ,,,this is our song ,,,,jonny cash

  • i love this song

  • definatly not something dave should sing imo and this isnt his band dumbasses

he just cant match his voice for this type of music

but in his own music and generally when his band covers neil young and other stuff he does fucking amazing

  • I agree Bondidog!! What a bozo.......

  • I think Dave's performance of this song is better than Johnny's & I'm a Cash fan.

  • I thought this really stunk. or rather Dave Mathews stunk. Emmylou was fine.

  • @nailswood

Totally agree with you. Matthews sings(?!) like he's reading blank verse. Awful. I think Emmylou must have done performed with him for a dare!!

  • i'v never heard dave's voice in a low pitch like this. it sounds really good

  • the veil touches the ground

  • You all are morons. This is NOT Dave Matthews BAND. This is DAVE MATTHEWS and Emmy.

Dave Matthews Band covers it MUCH MUCH MUCH better than this bullshit band put together to cover some Cash tunes. Dave and Emmy are great... I wish it was DMB and Emmy though. :/

  • What a lucky prick. Imagine getting a kiss, even a peck on the cheek, from Emmy. Oh, the knees go weak at the thought.

  • This is bad. I'm was expecting more from DMB.

  • it's just Dave and Emmylou, no DMB. the rest is just the house band that played with everybody that night.

  • wow, this is just awful. DMB may have a talented drummer, but the rythym sets this up miserably, Dave has the most overrated voice in history. the band is the best vocally, the chieftans is the best musically. there are a staggeringly large amount of versions of this song though, enough for anyone to have their favorites.

  • i saw them do this live in 2000 in Antioch, Tennessee, with a light rain and it was haunting.

plus, that isn't Carter Beauford drumming back there in this video.

  • Could use a little more Emmylou...

  • Oh God - I was afraid of how the Borecore version of this great song would turn out - check out some of the other versions: Lefty Frizell, JC, Nick Cave - and forget you ever heard this one. I like Emmylou Harris' part though.

  • peoplepeople41...did you go to LFHS?

  • Emmylou is an excellent artist in her own right.

But she is a superb accompanist, which is why so many have collaborated with her (everyone from the Chieftains to Knopfler to Dolly to The Band).

This video is a classic example... she complements but does not dominate, her timing is dead-on, her pitch is perfect.

She has been like this for decades, never showy or self-absorbed, just a professional who puts the music & artistry ahead of the performer, including herself.

  • They're both very talented, I'm just not sure she compliments Dave in this song.

  • @Mikeyondadrums, my God - how could she be any more perfect for this song?? Her haunting, melancholy wailing is the soul of the mountains, which is the setting one would imagine for this song.

  • @stillwaterguy04

I never said she wasn't good for this song, I just said I don't think she compliments Dave well.
