  • OMG GORDIE HAS HAIR

  • I didn't know Sheldon Cooper was in a band?

  • Thanks for posting. I wish I had watched that episode when it first aired. I would've been into the Hip a lot earlier!!

  • This song gives me chills every time I hear it

  • @Pskawt youre not alone. every time just like the first

  • This is just absolutely incredible!

  • effortless, smooth and simple. Love good old Gordie, but seeing him in his prime, so smooth and entertaining. He how tries too hard, always thinking that he is the hip. Looking at this as him just part of the band...is pretty cool.

  • @bowdsbowds Well, its true that Gord kind of embodies the band nowadays, but you can't say that the other boys don't get the recognition they deserve. Bob Baker's skills have been jaw dropping for me at times, and without Gordie Sinclair's voice in there gord would sound kinda feeble

  • For Buffalo and maybe Detroit and other border cities, the response was probably "The Hip on SNL?! YEAH" but for the rest of America, I can only imagine it was something like "Who the fuck..."

  • There's always one asshole.

  • @sweetswing1 LOL I know right! Probably the pastor down at Kingston Lutheran Church going through all the videos of these "smalltown bringdowns" ;O) How the FUCK do you dislike this performance?!?

  • "Those fingernails scratching on my hull" lyric must be one of the most succint expressions of what PTS must be like to those afflicted.

  • I've grown up with these guys it seems and they continue to defy age, keep on doing what you do best boys! Canada loves you!

  • what a great band!

  • Sheldon Cooper

  • This is from a VHS tape? The quality is excellent, it's hard to believe that you transferred this from VHS. But, I'm glad you did.

  • YOU KNOW.

As a snooty student of jazz some years ago, I used to denounce the Hip.

    WELL FUCK THAT.

    They're the best.

    I'm sorry for doubting you.

    <3

  • Hey Lorne!

  • well, not sure it is just about music actually. closed ears do happen and matter. I've followed the Hip since 1986 when I first heard them at the Horseshoe in Toronto. Every record was a new gem with remarkable expositions. But the Hip shined live. I saw them every chance I could. When I witnessed a 20 minute version of 'New Orleans' with 20,000 mesmerized fans I knew we weren't just waving the Canuck banner. This version of Disaster is remarkable and defines the Hip at their best.

  • ive watched this at least 500 times ... they were just unbeleiveable and if americans cant see that then canadians r bless they have them to ourselves.

  • ive watched this at least 500 times ... they were just unbeleiveable and if americans cant see that then canadians r better.

  • @ccake11 This is about music, let's not create an international incedent.

  • Flawless performance and a great transfer from VHS. I have to say though, whoever does sound at SNL needs to go back to school. The mix is waaaaay to heavy on Robbie's guitar, you can barely hear Paul. Not that Robbie's not a fantastic guitar player, it just would be nice to hear Paul as well.

  • An amazing 1995 performance from Canada's house band. I remember it like it was yesterday. Best Canadian band by far!!!!

  • maybe one of canadas best bands,don t forget,,,rush,nickleback,bto,neil young,triumph,april wine the guess who,jeff healy,loverboy,toronto,chilliwack,,etc,,,barenaked ladies,kim mitchell,trooper,,ok,,i m sure i missed a few,,but,,this tune kicks ass,,might i suggest though,,my music at work,,,and bob cayjeon,,,oh,,lou reed on letterman doing sweet jane ok,,i m done this joint isn t a microphone i gotta passit...lol

  • Canada's Greatest Band!

  • Id like to hear ANY newer band sound 1/2 this good live.

  • One of the top ten bands that doesn't get enough recognition! This guys are amazing but held back because they are Canadian...

  • @Bardotunes sooooo truee, couldnt have said it better myself

  • Had they done the Killer Whale Tank version of NOIS, that would've been Epic beyond description.

  • "and then the dream ends, when the phone rings, you're doing alright, he said it's out there, most days and nights, but only a fool would complain.

Anyway, (Patricia), if you like, our conversation is as faint as a sound, in my memory, as those fingernails,, scratching on my hull.

    Pure poetry. Pure love.

    Peace.

    Rock

  • One American here that is lucky enough to have seen the Hip live down here in Tennessee back about 96' or so. Loved them the first time I heard them and have loved them ever since! Great band, great song, one of many! Thank you for posting! I remember watching Saturday Night Live when Dan Akroyd announced them. AWESOME!

  • @IAMCORNDOG123456

Yeah, I recall the same show. Seems Akroyd introduced them earlier as they did, "Grace Too." Another fantastic song. For me, it's the best bands, having their own sounds, and even better lyrics, that set them apart from other great ones. No one can touch these guys sound, or lyrics. a completely different sound and "meaning," to R&R

And another great Canadian band. A gift to the rest of the world.

    Peace.

    Rock

  • fucking spot on

  • I figure if Sheldon Cooper was a singer he'd move a little like that

  • @jess1z1 hahahaha, awesome!

  • Agree with all these posts. I can't believe that was just laying around... what else have you got on tape???

  • Just thinking about this song makes me cry.

  • Get Ry Cooder to sing my ulugy

  • Thank you for posting this classic wonderful moment!!!!! Amazing quality.

  • as a hip fan since '83, and a view to this being one of their most brilliant songs/moments, sorry to see so few views and our american friends are still largely unaware. check 'put if off' footage.

  • Great recording off of an old VHS!! One of my favourite tunes from them!! Thanks for sharing.

  • Gord Downie's a lyrical genius. Seeing these motherfuckers in Ottawa tonight. :)

  • @Redpath9 Man.. Got like 20 friends from Sudbury heading down to watch 'em at Bluesfest and I'm stuck workin. Seen 'em 6 times but not the size that I'm sure Bluesfest will be.

  • Epic, a beautiful song by a Canadian band

  • 1995!!!

  • Damn I love that song! Happy Canada Day to all!

  • Absolutely fucking brilliant.

  • I love Gord's bass line throughout this song, it's just incredible.

  • In the words of Terry and Deaner,

    Johnny Fay is just Givin'er

  • ahhh fuck yes, excellent move my fellow canuck!

  • I remember seeing this on SNL when I was younger, but I've recently revisited it and I'm completely floored by it. Amazing. What are some other song suggestions?!

  • @apathyinsmalltowns highway girl - double suicide rant, locked in the trunk of a car, hundredth meridian, new orleans is sinking, little bones ... all their stuff is great

  • pathetic that <50,000 have watched this brilliant redition of a most remarkable song and yet milions watch Friday from some sap whose name I proudly will never recall or utter. "anyway, susan, if you like, our conversation, is as faint a sound..."

I've loved the hip forever, but put if off and nautical really struck chords.

  • @mongo88now88 Add up all the views of all the Hip videos on Youtube, it's probably a LOT more. The Hip will live on forever as one of the classic bands of our time, one trick ponies will be relegated to MTV reruns of 20 Artists we Forgot About For a Reason at 3 in the morning.

  • Watch the band... through a bunch of dancers... quickly follow the unknown... with.. oh something even more obscure and inaccessible to the mainstream American audience. Oh well, at least you'll always be big in Canada

  • 1ST DISLIKE

  • Best hip song.... Makes me get the piss shevers

  • @slackocaster Everytime man. never gets old.

  • wow, that last line is the last line of the Skydiggers 'A Penny More". I knew the Hip assiated with the Diggers but that is cool to do that on SNL

  • Thanks for putting this up. Its terrific.

  • when everyone still had their hair...

  • 0 dislikes, :)

  • one of the many reasons im proud to be a Canadian

  • That is awesome. The Hip are the troubadours of our time.

  • Johnny just pounding the goddamn guts out of the kit...

Thank you scat for the great quality vid

  • Ahh The Hip, what a great canadian band! thank you all for the great music you have giving us from the past years, and years to come. Long live Canadian bands.

  • WOW what a great video and song

BLOWS MY MIND HOW AWESOME THEY ARE. And they seem humble about it .

  • I DID I WOULD LIKE TO PRESONALLY THANK CANADA FOR THE HIP I SAW THEM THE FIRST TIME IN 1989 WITH LIKE 20 OTHERS @ ST ANDREWS IN DETROIT ..SINCE IVE SEEN THEM 6 MORE TIMES AND EVEN GOT TO MEET THEM..THEY ARE HANDS DOWN THE BEST BAND ALIVE AND TOURING ,I FIND IT SAD SO MANY PEOPLE NEVER HAVE HEARD OF THEM .BUT THE PEOPLE THAT MATTER IS THE STRANGERS YOU SING ALONG WITH AT HIP SHOWS. WHATS ALSO FUNNY IS THAT THEY WOULD ALL MAKE A PRETTY DECENT HOCKEY TEAM....BUT I DONT KNOW A THING ABOUT HOCKEY

  • This is great. Thanks for posting. Funny to know, at the time....and still now in the US anyways....... that most viewers didn't have a clue of the greatness they were witnessing.

  • Wow, that's a pretty clear video tape.

  • they look like nervous schoolgirls. Thanks for the chuckle.

saw them in small clubs for the first 4 albums.. top 3 concerts for me.

  • This was EPIC live. Best song of the concert I saw in GP.

  • They sounded perfect that night almost to perfect ....i like it when they change it up a bit perfect example is Killer whale tank...

  • Best Canadian Rock Band Of All Times , "The Tragically Hip"!!

  • 34,048 views and ZERO dislikes- damn right! (of course now I've probably jinxed it, like telling a pitcher he's throwing a perfect game)

    *It's not a deal nor a test

Nor a love of something fated -death!*

  • Canada's best band! Great show every time!

  • Great song for Remembrance Day!

    Love it.

  • We played this song at my friends funeral during the closing of his casket, It was awesome and he wouldn't of wanted it any other way.

  • This performance gives me chills.......simply awsome!

  • Johnny Fay, one of the top ten rock drummers out there who doesn't get the recognition that he deserves.

The man is a fucking human metronome.

  • @thegirl44 Actually, technically speaking he is easily the weakest part fo this band. He hasn't played anything but a 4/4 rhythm in all the albums except one, and it was their worst record.

  • @goveiac

Is playing anything more than a solid 4/4 needed for straight ahead rock n' roll? Isn't that time signature all that Etienne Loulie's original metronome counted?

I didn't say that he was a great technical drummer I said that he was one of the top ten rock drummers.

Now stop being ornery and enjoy the music.

  • @goveiac You obviously aren't a musician. If you are you're one piss poor musician at best. You comment is so stupid it it's making me smile. It's as dumb as saying Charlie Watts is the weakest link in the Rolling Stones. Shut your mouth if you can't say anything worth reading.

  • @angrius You are obviously the greatest musician of all time. All hail the loser who is probably 60 lbs overweight! You are the master! You are all knowing!!! You fat cunt.

  • @goveiac Awww..looks like I hit a nerve with the moron;)

  • @goveiac

Wow, I knew that you weren't too bright but this comment just makes you look like an immature asshole.

Face it, as angrius said you know jack shit about music, son, calling someone fat ain't going to change facts.

  • @thegirl44 Absolutely true! They are so tight and that can be traced right back to Johnny (and Gord Sinclair on bass as well). I've seen some of their shows and other live bands look like they're just phoning it in compared to these guys. Awesome!

  • @UTubist512

Agreed, the Hip is one of those bands that when you get to work for them it stops feeling like work 'cause you get to enjoy the show.

  • @thegirl44 Yeah. I agree 100%.

  • @thegirl44

    God damm right!

  • Fav song by the hip ^•^

lol Gordon downie was soooo devilishly handsome there!

  • what a fuckin wicked band! seen them live twice and both times they were fuckin unreal

  • great vid thanks for the post

  • best "early" version I've seen... then again

  • Pure power.

  • I marvelled at this song when it was released on Day for Night. Now, I am even more amazed by the brilliance and relevance to all our lives. I've seen The Hip over a dozen times live, but still wonder at this stuff.

  • I remember this like it was yesterday. Definitely a great band. Seen them live many times and I play in a band that covers their songs all the time to this day. That last line "Whoa, from a lover no one compares to you" comes from the song A penny more by another Canadian band The Skydiggers. Look it up it is a fantastic song.

  • combed hair? FUCK SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE!!!!!!!!!!...and those left in the water kicked off our pant legs and we headed for home....

  • combed hair?

  • im from the U.S. and cannot agree more, Canada produces the best musictions by far........ Rush, and Hip dominate.

  • now that is good music!....Eh Justin?

  • "Only a fool would complain"

  • one of the best musical preformances ever on this show.

  • Nice to see Gord when he had hair!!

  • Yes, starring Peter O'Toole as the curmudgeonly light house keeper andJody Foster in the role of Susan...TTH Rocked Colorado Springs Colorado in '99, and I was one of the lucky few to be rocked.

  • Americans should embrace the Hip as us Canadians. Their loss.

  • Did they??

  • They're making this song into a movie...

  • @ChristopherRay555 seriously??

  • americans have no idea what real music is the tragically hip are legendary!! CANADA!!!!

  • One of the most powerful songs ever written. I still quiz people on what they think it would be like to be one of the men who made it onto the boat. Would they kick at the others in the water to save themselves? These guys in the water aren't strangers or just some people you know in the neighbourhood. They're army comrades, who may have saved YOUR life once or twice. You have to go home to your kids, but they have kids too ...

  • @metarika2

I'd be careful with that line of questioning. You never know when you're going to run into that someone who had to put their boot heel on someone else's neck to survive.

  • If this is VHS.... wow.

  • when I first heard Nautical, after years of the Hip, I fell over. They amazed me yet again.

  • GORD IS A GOD, GENIUS, SUPERIOR PERFORMER

  • those left in the water were kicked off our pantlegs as we headed for home

one of the most amazing lyrics of the 90's if not ever

  • Great band! One of the greatest live bands ever. If you have the chance to see them--GO!!!

  • kingston rules!

  • this is such a good performance of this song

  • omg I have been trying to find this video for ever.Thank you for posting. This performance and grace tyoo were wicked shows.and to think i was listening to stomping tom connors to get linked here lol. Canada rules

  • one of the best live bands!!!

  • I still remember the night they played this and grace too. here's to being 16 in Ontario and gettin drunk with your friends

  • i can still remember the night they played this, it was great, they also played grace too. here's to being 16 and drunk in Ontario

  • Kudo's again! Fuck them greedy corporate bastards...

  • I love this video so much, thanks for sharing it with us scatpackbee! :)

  • God bless you scatpackbee.

  • Sweet. I have vivid memories of watching this. Best live performance on SNL...ever.

  • Best. Hip. Song. Ever.

  • I'd kill to see them live...

  • look at Gord at 1:00. That was Gord and why I saw this band 24 times over 10 years. The selectoin was quick? THis is my 2nd fav hip song, aft Cordelia. I still shiver at the wonder of this arrangement. As those fingernails...

  • you puppies.

give your sick momma a hug

you listen to New Orleans on the Hill in Barrie ain the rain and you know this band gord shook my hand with the insanity of a child and I wish I could measure up to that

  • i remember watching this live....a great canadian moment....thanks for posting

  • anyway, susan. I remember this well.loved them then as I do now.

  • remember the Horseshoe in TO in after '38 years old'. That was cool. Gord was a freak as I handed him a beer. when

  • I had this dream, whre I relished The Hip, and The screaming filled my head all day...

  • Thanks for the posting! Jesus! This was 15 years ago?! I remember watching it because they were on... With dan akroyd I think?

  • Can't believe NBC hasn't found this and shut it down yet. KINGSTON ROCKS!

  • Should've opened with this. Grace Too was lame.

  • Thanks for posting! A great tune sung by a great singer in a great band. Gotta love the emotion Gord puts into the song - makes you really feel it.

  • Is that some Skydiggers at eh end of the tune????????

  • the best band live ever

  • This is the prime example of what being Canadian really is and Gord is a god damn lyrical genius

  • Your not canadian until you've sung a song about a..................Nautical Disaster........

  • If I may finish your quote: this song is called "Nautical Disaster!"

  • @IRISHHAMMER1

    Gordon Lightfoot would agree.

  • gives me shivers during the chorus ... fuckin' eh

  • Thanks for posting this one too!

  • this is fuckin classic!! gordie with hair

  • this is sick

  • UAUHHHHHH. Thanx

  • awesome

  • I wonder if these guys ever did a TV interview talking about their experience on this show.

  • Yes, check out:

The Tragically Hip's Gord Downie on Q TV

  • actually they did and in grace too gordie says were tragically hip instead of fabulously rich and said he forgot the words of the song.. and if you watch it he actually looks puzzled after he says it... pretty funny

  • dark, brilliant...one of the best all-around bands I've ever seen.

  • agreed!!!

  • Every time I watch a video of these guys I love them more, so much passion and intensity.

I am noticing some simalarities between Gord Downie and Micheal Stipe of R.E.M

Both full on artists and masters of their craft

  • OMG THANK YOU for posting this! This was the moment that made me fall in love with this band...I had known of them before this having spent lots of time in Toronto, but their performance on SNL and this song specifically is what got me hooked...went out and bought Day For Night first thing the next morning, and it's been LOVE ever since :)

  • I love HIP soooooo much!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • BEST. BAND. EVER!

  • Fuck ya!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Just saw these guys a couple of weeks ago in Banff........wow.....I've seen them 7 times and this one was one of the best. And yes they did this song.

  • Thanks for posting. I'll be at the show in DC in about a month. 2 sets, can't wait

  • I'm glad to brag. These guys are my friends too. Gordon introduced me to his wife back stage in Atlanta. they all signed my Fully Completely tour poster. And like a dumbass I gave it to my ex-wife. I'm soooo glad this video is in a place I can see it anytime I want to.

  • Great lyrics, great song, great band

  • sick song
