@horsiegal13 Good question! The click is a "bridge" between the cat doing the correct move like "sit" "up" "down" "paw" etc... and the actual treat which is usually a small chunk of red meat. These are all natural moves and enables us to observe the cat, so if they injure themselves we can click and treat the cats and get a better look at them so we can decide what to do :)
What I think is that the big cats that you work with are "as tame as a wild animal can be" in other words they tolerate humans only because they can't get close enough to harm them.
@CynderMizuki Tigers or any species of wild cat will never be tame and they can definitely get close enough to injure us, we are just well trained and well aware of how quickly their mood can change!

There's no program that releases big cats into the wild, let alone older cats. Zoos and circuses rotate their animals shoving out the older animals to bring in younger animals.
Not at BCR :) We don't breed our cats, there are many "sanctuaries" out there that do still breed and allow contact, this doesn't help the solve the problem one bit, it maybe helps get more visitors with cute cubs all the time but what happens to the older cats?? Plus there are so many cats that need a home out there, us breeding cats to put in cages would be very wrong.

I feel as if Tigers at BigCatRescue are looked down upon big time. The way you talk about your Lions is way different than the way you talk about your tigers. "Maybe you can be gentleman afterall". How did that guy come up with that comment? Tigers are solitary animals, Lions are not remember that. Why can't you bring your tigers somewhere else in Asia where they can actually be properly looked after and have more space?
They all look massive when they're on their hind legs! They live right next door to each other actually, they like to stare each other out! I'd put my money on Joseph though, like I always say, lions have that fighting instinct more built into them than lions from protecting their pride, or trying to take over one! Then they have that thick mane protecting their vulnerable neck so lion vs tiger = LION WINS!
wat?? no way! tiger is the one with fighting instinct. dude have u ever seen a any lion vs tiger videos? you'll see tiger have sharp paws and bigger muscles & much faster than lions. they haunt alone. solitary. unlike lions, they haunt alone. they haunt bigger prey like "GAUR". WORLD'S BIGGEST CATTLE. WEIGHTS MORE THAN A TON. ALOMOST LIKE A RHINO. TIGER HAUNT IT RARELY. THEY DONT NEED NO HELP FROM "PRIDE". DO UR REASEARCH ON YOUTUBE. ANYWAY, EXPERTS SAY TIGER IS BETTER FIGHTER AGAINST A LION.
lol do your research on youtube.... yeah youtube isn't always correct, but I would have to say a Tiger is much better suited too win a 1 v.s. 1 with a Lion, but if it was 5 Tigers v.s. 5 Lions, the Lions would win, cause they are more used too group work
Hi, no Brian was never in the cage with any of the tigers we do everything form the outside, if we do need to get in the cage we can close the cat off into the other section and then do maintenance etc.. on the other side, clever hey!?
btw tiger r not used to humans. so they're a little nervous but not scared. but in lion case ppl go too close to it so they can rub his balls. just admit it. tiger are quicker smarter and r brave enough to haunt a prey tripple times bigger than itself. BUT LION need the help of "pride" to succeed.+ African Buffalo OWNS male/female lion anytime!!!! and since when did lions live in jungle? tigers do. tiger dont give a fuck if a lion has mane. tiger swipes paws faster. RESEARCH IT
I had an idea but I suppose the issue would be the cost of having money for it. Has any one objected to the idea fo creating or buying a catwheel for the cats? I think the cats woudl enjoy having this to relieve their energy and boredom.
Nice idea, but cats can be very lazy, they like to explore new areas in the wild but I don't think they would make themselves run, if they didn't have too!?
Some of our tigers just don't like certain people, they may remind them of someone bad from their past, or they just don't like the look of a person? But that's just their way of letting us know, maybe the tiger was camera shy!?
I assume Their agitated because their 600LBS of muscle and bulked up energy, but there isn't much they can do. so that'z why they wanna attack. He keeps saying they don't care. Well who would if everyday your in a fence, and bored to hell. Do they get any activities to keep them mentality stimulated and muscles from atrophy?
They don't really care for you as long as you stay out of their space, we give all our tigers access to a pool or the lake, they receive enrichment consistently and have other things to play with and destroy in their enclosures like boomer balls!

Switch the species and you could be talking about a human maximum security prison. It is eerie to hear the same things being said about the inmates. I think I understand it more for the cats...but for humans? What are we doing to them in prison if they are acting like animals? The prison guards speak in the exact same language. Very fascinating. Great work with the rescue. Love the education behind it...I hope we can preserve these animals in the wild.
Hm that's extremely unfortunate that a person would risk their own life and the cat's life by getting in the cage with them. Cute and friendly as they may seem they are wild predators zoo keepers should know this..
They dont seem to like keepers in general, its like they see them as the enemies to their freedom.
The "dominance factor" is not present in the relationship, they feel free to attack the keeper at any time even if he is feeding them, showing them his friendliness.
Its probably also cause food equals aggressiveness for big cats.
awe! evr since i watched ur guyses videos ive been studying them again and mor and harder!!! YAY the person who started this orginization is my idol 8P
Hey, I work at a zoo where we have a few big cats. While I'm not a keeper (Grounds crew) I've been close to these animals' enclosures and have had them stalk/hunt me while I worked. It's extremely unnerving.
While these animals are beautiful, one of the best things to remember (and what I tell curious guests almost daily): captive does not mean domesticated.
I think I might try to think of it as giving the cat a chance to do something they were made to do as if satisfying it's desire to stalk, since you're safe outside the enclodure. It's naturally your instinct to be unnerved. It's okay, then.
Are these cats here because they were kept in worse conditions previously to being "rescued"? Jeeze, I wish Born Free could take all caged big cats and put them in their sanctuaries, if not able to rehabilitate into a wildlife reserve. The tigers go to India and live in their natural environment, with large territories. I feel very sad for big cats that are not in their native lands, living free (or as close to that as possible). It's not much of a life for them, to be kept in confinement.
Hi, yes we have rescued our cats from bad situations, backyard breeders, fur farms, former pets confined to small cages etc... Our mission is to put ourselves out of busines get the laws changed so people can't own a tiger as a "pet" and try to solve the problem in the U.S. We try and keep all our cats as happy as we can living their lives in cages with a great diet including whole prey and constant enrichment.
This guy does a disservice to tigers by making a careless remark. A Bengal tiger would NOT NORMALLY "kill and eat a human being", unless A) it was sick or wounded B) starving c)acculturated to preying on humans, as are some tigers in northern India.
Hi Big Cat Rescue. I think you guys are fantastic. I love watching all your videos! I love all the big cats, and little ones too.
A lot of my friends love cats, and some of them recently visit Tiger Temple in Thailand to have their photos with the tigers. I hear different stories about the temple - good and bad. Do you think its cruel to visit these places? Are these places legitimate or do you think they take advantage of the cats? Thanks. You guys are great. Keep up the good work!
Hi, thanks for the words of praise! The Tiger Temple in my opinion is an accident waiting to happen and goes against our no contact rule in a big way. Having contact with tigers like that also promotes big cat ownership, they see tigers being walked on leashes and want to do the same thing themselves.
At Big Cat Rescue there are 3 different classes of cats we clean , red areas are the smaller cats bobcats, servals, ocelots etc.. Yellow areas are Cougars and green areas are the big guys, leopards, tigers lions etc.. it takes a minimum of 2 years volunteering before you get to clean the big guys and girls!
Bigcatrescue i have a question ...do you ever think these tigers can become totaly tame? i have seen loads of clips on youtube on lions and tigers making friends with humans and dogs and they are fasinating ..but i dont know ..maybe its just me but i always get the feeling that at any moment they could just turn on you and attack you?
2. also how do you know they wont eat you? do you make sure they are full of food before going in with them?
clockers678t, the feeling you have is definitely the right one! We never go in the animals enclosure unless they have been locked into the other side of their enclosure, we also clean from the outside using long scraper poles. No matter how friendly they appear as they rub on their cage and chuff at us, all the staff and volunteers know that would change the moment we stepped inside with them in their "territory". Thanks for watching!
I would say, even with those movies you see on youtube of people who "own" large wildcats, you have to remember that even a house cat, when not in the mood to be messed with can take a swing at you or bite at you. Take that tiny cat and turn it into a tiger, and then you can see the very real problem with owning a wildcat.
It does sound kind of stupid when you put it that way, but these cats are smart animals and if they don't like you they'll try anything to make your job harder/try and get you! It takes a lot of time to judge what they are going to do and then react accordingly, thanks for watching!
such beatiful animals, but such a sad story too. its time for us as humans to step up and protect the wildlife we were gifted with, both in the wild and in captivity. its amazing how responsive they are to humans, yet how brutal they can be - just think about the parallells with humanitys behaviour to them however :(
lovely video, id love to work out in a conservation centre with such beautiful animals one day
Nala has a fearsome roar. I tried to find other tiger roars that sounded like hers, by watching videos of other tigers, but I couldn't find any. I like her roar.
They usually don't eat people, it's not one of their main goals. They don't actually seek them out, but if they happen to be hungry and in a bad mood while your around, well... look out.
Yeah I don't blame the tigers and lions for mauling humans most of the time, what do we think is going to happen? They have to live in cages, where they are not supposed to be. After awhile they get frustrated and feel trapped. I'd maul some people too if I could! Poor kitties :( They shouldn't be shot for it!
Instinct has more to do with it than hunger. All cats chase prey. To a large cat, we're definitely prey-sized. If you do something that activates their instinct to chase prey, they are going to chase you down and kill you. It's foolish to think otherwise.
This video always reminds me of the tiger at the San Francisco Zoo, who leaped over a 15-20 foot enclosure and mauled 3 teenage boys; one died, I don't know what happened to the others.
Tatiana, the tiger, was shot and killed by police, which I think was terribly sad despite what happened to those boys.
Is it normal behavior for a big cat to leap over such a steep enclosure and maul some people who were teasing her? It seems distinctly "untigerish" to me.
Tigers, like most wild animals will avoid being around humans if they can. When humans encroach into the territory of wild animals sometimes conflicts do arise.
105km, sadly, it is possible. The time to step up the efforts to save the wilderness habitats for these magnificent cats is NOW. Each one of us needs to put serious effort into learning what we can individually do to support the efforts of saving and protecting their wilderness habitats. Can I send you some links?
Experts believe that there are two to three more times the number of tigers in American backyards than left in the wild. Only about 4,000 are left in the wild. I think it is a sad reflection on our ability to manage a planet when we have caused the natural extinction rates to rise by more than 1000%
Mer005, usually their stories are brought to us. We don't go searching. More situations are brought to us each year. So many that we can't save them all. That is the problem the few true sanctuaries are bursting at the seams yet the number of exotics that need rescued never seems to dwindle. Until laws change the sad stories of no longer wanted, abandoned, abused or neglected exotics will continue to grow. The numbers are staggering; it is heartbreaking that we simply can't save them all.
FlamingFang17, you can do many things. Never pay to visit places that exploit the animals & make them do tricks as that creates many bad situations for the animals that the public does not see. Support ONLY sanctuaries that do NOT breed & sell the animals. Support programs that help protect & preserve these animals in the wild. Support programs that are aimed at reducing poaching. Support programs the stop the destruction of forests. If you visit our main website you can find more detailed info.
FlamingFand17, have you heard of a bill called Haley's Act? If that bill passes and becomes law it will go a long way to help prevent abuse and exploitation of wild animals. Please surf our main website to find the answers you seek OR give me permission to send you some links in a message.
You at BigC would seem to be very familiar with the individual characters and personalities of each cat. Does research of big cats in the wield show any similar traits per individual cat as you experience. Or are the personalities of your cats reflective of an unfortunate life long incarceration? Thank you for your time and effort.
Nccajax, I appreciate your comment. To answer your question it is some of both actually. We try very hard to be aware of the different cats likes and dislikes. The staff and volunters are always observing the cats and sharing info with each other so that everyone is aware of the cats' individual preferrences. We also have a regular enrichment program for each cat. Different cats like different things. Careful logs are kept documenting which enrichment items or activities various cats prefer.
IrreplaceableXD, no matter how much we are arund these amazing animals their beauty, power and wonder never ceases to warm our hearts more each day. They inspire each of us to work harder at making the world a better place for them and all animals.
wow thanks for putting this up! I really want to work with big cats once i finish up my Wildlife degree. (only 2-3 more years!) It's really interesting to see what day to day life is like for an animal caretaker.
Prepfighter65, HURRAY FOR YOU! You have chosen a great field! Keep up the great work toward you goal! You WILL make a difference! Have you visited our main website, yet?
What do you exactly keep the big cats for? To breed them and release them? Or are they injured or something? I'm pretty sure you don't breed most of them though because you talk about some animals that get spayed in a video.
We do not breed. There are so many of these exotic cats that are discarded from the private pet trade that have no where to go we can't take them all. The cats here have come from many backgrounds some of which are is former pets, closed down roadside zoos, confiscations etc. Visit our website to read the story of each cat at Big Cat Rescue. Sadly once a wild cat is born into captivity it simply is not feasible to release them into the wild. You can find the answers to why on our website, too.
i wan't to work with big cats, what classes do i need to take in order to do so, i wan't to give them food and all that i wan't to be able to work with them and feal them and touch them, they gain my trust of course, please respond thanks
Andyladousa, There is a section on our website that will help you find the info you are looking for. However, we do not touch or pet the cats here. Even if you 'gain their trust' they are still wild aimals and will act and react as wild animals.
80zgrl82, we think it is a bad idea. While it may look fun take some time to consider the 'rest of the picture'. Many tigers are born just to be used for a few weeks as photo props. What happens to them after they are no longer used as photo props? The next MANY years of their lives are usually really sad. Why should they spend years and years living in misery just so they can be used a few weeks so people can have a few pictures taken with them? Please visit our main website for more info.
i have visited your site and learned many things. keep up the good work!!! i wish i could donate but i'm still a student and all i can do is pray for the success of your organization...
It is important that daily cleaning of the Cat-A-Tats(yards) be done (which it is) without causing stress to the cats. Big Cat Rescue workers are quite aware of how the cats are acting and feeling. They take great strides to create a non-stressful enviroment for the cats. Brian's actions in this video were prompted with that end goal in mind. If the cats are more relaxed when he is a round then he can clean without the cat being stressed. NOTE: We NEVER go IN with the cats.
Amazing how smart and "trainable" these animals are. I'm a big cat lover yet never seen relatively wild and "undomesticated" big cats perform these tricks. Though from what I viewed in videos, it seemed male lions were less intelligent and trainable than tigers or female lions. Can you confirm this?
Big cats have to be trained to some extent to even be semi-safe around people. But it's a mistake to think that because they can learn audio cues, they are "trainable." They'll always be wild animals, those others "doing tricks" no less so then these.
Hi BigCatRescue again, I have another question. Do big cats such as lions, tigers, leopards or jaguars socialize with humans? Like a dog? Because the way I see it, Tigers usually or sometimes obey their keeper or masters.
Some tolerate people sure, but even those captive cats can still turn and kill you one day as they are wild. That is why we do our work from outside the cages.
how does the "click" work? what does it do with the animals?
horsiegal13 3 weeks ago
@horsiegal13 Good question! The click is a "bridge" between the cat doing the correct move like "sit" "up" "down" "paw" etc... and the actual treat which is usually a small chunk of red meat. wat?? no way! tiger is the one with fighting instinct. dude have u ever seen a any lion vs tiger videos? you'll see tiger have sharp paws and bigger muscles & much faster than lions. they haunt alone. solitary. unlike lions, they haunt alone. they haunt bigger prey like "GAUR".
DoomaceIsHere 2 years ago
lol do your research on youtube.... yeah youtube isn't always correct, but I would have to say a Tiger is much better suited too win a 1 v.s. 1 with a Lion, but if it was 5 Tigers v.s. 5 Lions, the Lions would win, cause they are more used too group work

AnimalLover5267 2 years ago

Cute and friendly as they may seem they are wild predators zoo keepers should know this..
blackrob2001 2 years ago
How did he know about Fluffy and Mr. Jingles?
acr08807 2 years ago
They dont seem to like keepers in general, its like they see them as the enemies to their freedom.
The "dominance factor" is not present in the relationship, they feel free to attack the keeper at any time even if he is feeding them, showing them his friendliness.
Its probably also cause food equals aggressiveness for big cats.

Hey, I work at a zoo where we have a few big cats. While I'm not a keeper (Grounds crew) I've been close to these animals' enclosures and have had them stalk/hunt me while I worked. It's extremely unnerving.
While these animals are beautiful, one of the best things to remember (and what I tell curious guests almost daily): captive does not mean domesticated.
uberkriz 2 years ago
Well said, they may seem complacent and friendly at times but they are still wild animals that wouldn't think twice about attacking you!
BigCatRescue 2 years ago

It's not much of a life for them, to be kept in confinement.
melissainnovascotia 3 years ago

Keep up the good work!
aa90000000 3 years ago
Hi, thanks for the words of praise! The Tiger Temple in my opinion is an accident waiting to happen and goes against our no contact rule in a big way. Having contact with tigers like that also promotes big cat ownership, they see tigers being walked on leashes and want to do the same thing themselves.
Thanks for watching!

2. also how do you know they wont eat you? do you make sure they are full of food before going in with them?
clockers678t 3 years ago
clockers678t, the feeling you have is definitely the right one!
BigCatRescue 3 years ago
I would say, even with those movies you see on youtube of people who "own" large wildcats, you have to remember that even a house cat, when not in the mood to be messed with can take a swing at you or bite at you. Take that tiny cat and turn it into a tiger, and then you can see the very real problem with owning a wildcat.

Never thought I'd hear cleaning poop described as "a higher level of activity" that requires a year and a half of training.
GDR352 3 years ago
It does sound kind of stupid when you put it that way, but these cats are smart animals and if they don't like you they'll try anything to make your job harder/try and get you! It takes a lot of time to judge what they are going to do and then react accordingly, thanks for watching!
BigCatRescue 3 years ago
such beatiful animals, but such a sad story too. its time for us as humans to step up and protect the wildlife we were gifted with, both in the wild and in captivity. its amazing how responsive they are to humans, yet how brutal they can be - just think about the parallells with humanitys behaviour to them however :(

vickiormindyb 3 years ago
They usually don't eat people, it's not one of their main goals. They don't actually seek them out, but if they happen to be hungry and in a bad mood while your around, well... look out.
Yeah I don't blame the tigers and lions for mauling humans most of the time, what do we think is going to happen? They have to live in cages, where they are not supposed to be. After awhile they get frustrated and feel trapped. I'd maul some people too if I could! Poor kitties :( They shouldn't be shot for it!
Klonj18 3 years ago
Instinct has more to do with it than hunger. All cats chase prey. To a large cat, we're definitely prey-sized. If you do something that activates their instinct to chase prey, they are going to chase you down and kill you. It's foolish to think otherwise.
capnquack 3 years ago
This video always reminds me of the tiger at the San Francisco Zoo, who leaped over a 15-20 foot enclosure and mauled 3 teenage boys; one died, I don't know what happened to the others.
Tatiana, the tiger, was shot and killed by police, which I think was terribly sad despite what happened to those boys.
Is it normal behavior for a big cat to leap over such a steep enclosure and maul some people who were teasing her? It seems distinctly "untigerish" to me.
vickiormindyb 3 years ago
I want to ask you a question: Do tigers seek out human beings to eat them?
I ask because, when I tried to get some guy to show interest in saving the big cats, he disagreed on the grounds that tigers "eat human beings."
I told him that 3 types of tiger are already extinct and HE said, "Well that's 3 more cats that won't eat a person."
I thought he was an idiot but kept it to myself. He acts like tigers are seeking out people with a vengeance.
What do you think about it?
vickiormindyb 3 years ago
Tigers, like most wild animals will avoid being around humans if they can. When humans encroach into the territory of wild animals sometimes conflicts do arise.

vickiormindyb 3 years ago
Experts believe that there are two to three more times the number of tigers in American backyards than left in the wild. Only about 4,000 are left in the wild. I think it is a sad reflection on our ability to manage a planet when we have caused the natural extinction rates to rise by more than 1000%

mer005 3 years ago
Mer005, usually their stories are brought to us. We don't go searching. More situations are brought to us each year. So many that we can't save them all. That is the problem the few true sanctuaries are bursting at the seams yet the number of exotics that need rescued never seems to dwindle. Until laws change the sad stories of no longer wanted, abandoned, abused or neglected exotics will continue to grow. The numbers are staggering; it is heartbreaking that we simply can't save them all.

What can i do to help the tigers and all the other big cats?
FlamingFang17 3 years ago
FlamingFang17, you can do many things. Never pay to visit places that exploit the animals & make them do tricks as that creates many bad situations for the animals that the public does not see. Support ONLY sanctuaries that do NOT breed & sell the animals. Support programs that help protect & preserve these animals in the wild. Support programs that are aimed at reducing poaching. Support programs the stop the destruction of forests. If you visit our main website you can find more detailed info.
BigCatRescue 3 years ago
FlamingFand17, have you heard of a bill called Haley's Act? If that bill passes and becomes law it will go a long way to help prevent abuse and exploitation of wild animals. Please surf our main website to find the answers you seek OR give me permission to send you some links in a message.
BigCatRescue 3 years ago
You at BigC would seem to be very familiar with the individual characters and personalities of each cat. Does research of big cats in the wield show any similar traits per individual cat as you experience. Or are the personalities of your cats reflective of an unfortunate life long incarceration? Thank you for your time and effort.
NCCAJAX 3 years ago
Nccajax, I appreciate your comment. To answer your question it is some of both actually. We try very hard to be aware of the different cats likes and dislikes. The staff and volunters are always observing the cats and sharing info with each other so that everyone is aware of the cats' individual preferrences. We also have a regular enrichment program for each cat. Different cats like different things. Careful logs are kept documenting which enrichment items or activities various cats prefer.

What do you exactly keep the big cats for? To breed them and release them? Or are they injured or something? I'm pretty sure you don't breed most of them though because you talk about some animals that get spayed in a video.
wildwind1295 3 years ago
We do not breed. There are so many of these exotic cats that are discarded from the private pet trade that have no where to go we can't take them all. The cats here have come from many backgrounds some of which are is former pets, closed down roadside zoos, confiscations etc. Visit our website to read the story of each cat at Big Cat Rescue. Sadly once a wild cat is born into captivity it simply is not feasible to release them into the wild. You can find the answers to why on our website, too.

What are your feelings about people going to pet tigers at Dream World in Australia? I want to go, but not if it's a bad idea.
80zgrl82 3 years ago
80zgrl82, we think it is a bad idea. While it may look fun take some time to consider the 'rest of the picture'. Many tigers are born just to be used for a few weeks as photo props. What happens to them after they are no longer used as photo props? The next MANY years of their lives are usually really sad. Why should they spend years and years living in misery just so they can be used a few weeks so people can have a few pictures taken with them? Please visit our main website for more info.

SCeles 4 years ago
Big cats have to be trained to some extent to even be semi-safe around people. But it's a mistake to think that because they can learn audio cues, they are "trainable." They'll always be wild animals, those others "doing tricks" no less so then these.

Some tolerate people sure, but even those captive cats can still turn and kill you one day as they are wild. That is why we do our work from outside the cages.
