  • Prince's little brother as he was known in some circles. Jesse Johnson.

  • Still sounds sick 2 day as it did when it came out!!!!!!!

  • I love the music that came out of Minneapolis in the late 70's thru 80's. I actually live for it and love what Jesse was doing back then, but the reason I'm posting is to say that - OhMyGAWD, he is cute! For me, his cuteness is an added bonus to how talented he was. Opps, is, sorry Jesse. Oh, and they sure did have some interesting hair styles back then, wow...

  • The 80's we were one big happy family and music was the Father.

  • Some people DON'T REALIZE that this IS/WAS this was ALL their sound, not just Prince.

  • @dabaddchampion Tell 'em bout it!

  • this is the shit!

  • They used to love the white girls in the R&B videos back then, huh? LOL....

  • @MEEZLEMONSTER Had a Dave Chappell moment? Lol!

  • @MEEZLEMONSTER we just used 2 love any lady that had that appolonia/sheila e/vanity look, alot of brothers were gettin' witih the snow bunnies back then

  • Pink suit pink shoes pink guitar pink car.... Im Jesse Johnson Bitch!!!

  • classic

  • Damn!!! I haven't heard this song since all the way back to the 80's

  • Dude in the black (guitar) on the side with the helmet curl/afro..smh I didn't notice it the video first came out!

  • JAMMMMMM!!!! LMAO at the drummer with the ciggy in his mouth LOL. Between the Jheri curl activator and hairspray fumes, he was trying to blow the whole damn place up LMAO.

  • lol......ohh, ohh, ohh...fly but still a knockoff !

  • @make8shorty what? knock off from who?

  • I wanna know who was doing that dance in the mirror cause i was just to see if i could do it like Jesse :)

  • i truely love dis song, it makes me smile cause my boyfriend sung it to me lol ilove his crazy ass!!

  • I wish I can get this on my cell phone so I can jam it walking down the street:)but it wont play on my cell phone:(

  • Why do I feel like the only one who has noticed that music doesn't sound like this anymore? This is ear candy-musicianship,jamming...what songs are supposed to have. How can people live without it?

All people care about today are "beats'',not hearing rhythm guitars, interesting keyboard riffs, solos, extended jams.

  • @catperson73

AutoTune ruined things at the turn of the millennium. Pop and R&B have been limping through teenybopper ringtone fluff ever since, and even c&w has lost authenticity. Rock is the last refuge in commercial popular music for craftsmanship, but only because of its self-contained writing-performing culture and amenity to relatively independent releasing arrangements.

  • @catperson73 You need to play for today's so-called music executives they don't have a clue as to what real music is.

  • yea if yall trace it he was morrs day guitarist with the time this is my uncle and yea i havent seen him sense his daughters funneral either

  • TOTALLY CLASSIC

  • Prince with a Tan

  • I though he was sooo cute back then too. With those big eyes and long eyelashes.

  • Sometimes I wonder if Ready For The World used this video as inspiration for "Oh Sheila"...things that make you go "hmmmm"...

  • this my shit I was 14 when this wasout

  • DAMN JESSIE FINE IN THAT PINK SUIT LOL THEY STRAIGHT JAMMING GO HEAD THEN

  • jam jam, this is real r&b

  • I got his 12" vinyl version still spiinning on my turn table...it sounds great and powerful yet..great funky stuff

  • Do Jessie Johnson fans who enjoy his Paisley/Prince flavoured funky pop stuff also enjoy his Bare my Naked Soul Hendrixy-Blues Rock? I love B.M.N.S. but cannot stand this type of music. Maybe that is the reason why Jessie never made it worldwide. Such a shame!! If he had followed up B.M.N.S. with a similar type album within a couple of years, who knows what would have happened. Funk at that time wasn't so much in demand, whereas Classic Rock is always in vogue

  • goes hard.

  • My curl was tight back in the day.... Drove girls wild

  • I'm assuming those of you saying this is a rip-off of Prince & Morris don't realize that Jesse was a member of The Time which was a protege band of Prince's.What would you expect?

  • It's like they purposely wanted a Prince & The Revolution look for them.

  • very prince and morris day-esque

  • @gatoradeee - Yes, very Minneapoliesque....

  • I remember when this video was filmed,,,they told everyone prince was gonna be on stage playing just to get people to come,,,,,,,he was a member of the time but not a popular one....

  • funky !

  • Love this young man right here, Gussy!

  • i thought he was thee HOTTEST guy!!!!! even though he wore pink!!!!! i don't think he could really dance much after watching this vid!!!! its ok, he doesnt have to dance!!!

  • Back then it was either mike or prince.

  • @japittrich what about debarge, kool & the gang, Shalamar, Rick James..

Mike was huge but he only had so few but very good) songs that came out in '79 and '83..You had big bands that were consistent too..

  • Oh, how I miss the 80's...

  • A quite blatent Prince rip off. But never the less he is quite good :)

  • @FitDonkey Why a rip-off? Most male artists wore their jheri curls like that in '85, wore bold outfits, and had that same kind of voice and manner. That was the mid 80s look for black men. And jesse johnsonwore pink/purple a year before purple rain came out so he didn't copy that.

  • @FitDonkey u stupid bitch they all came from the same camp prince stole shit from him too vice versa rofl its the Minneapolis look u idiot rofl

  • LIL CUTE, GUITAR PLAYER, MAKE YOUR MOMMA PROUD!!!

  • also i have been thinking about this song for a long time thanks youtube

  • i wonder where is he now???????? he was bad to me i thought

  • @deena507 get the current issue of Ebony...very deep interview with Jesse!!!

  • this used to be song in the 80's in LOUISVILLE,KY,

  • daaamn this is funky still! that girl in the audience has zero soul, damn! she is so off =))) whole band is bad-

  • @kory148 I couldn't disagree more with you, Jesse Johnson is the sheeit!!! Prince is the sheeit too! I love everything about this sound.

  • @mellomoodz70 why do you always write in all caps & pick fights with people over stupid YouTube comments? I mean, daymn!!!

  • Loved Jesse. Have all of his albums (CDs, I guess).

  • damn. could he bite prince's style even more? what a cheap prince imitation....... no wonder you weren't successful after leaving The Time.

  • @kory148 BITE PRINCE ? DO YOU REALIZE HOW PEOPLE PRINCESS BIT OFF!! RICK JAMES , JAMES BROWN , JIMI HENDRIX , MICHAEL JACKSON , ETC,ETC...JESSE JOHNSON IS SUCCESSFUL TO THE FOLKS WHO DIG HIS MUZIK.

  • Oh oh oh!! Break it down!!

  • back when brothers wore red blush...they look better than today..feminine yes but that was sexy

  • 80's sound of Mineapolis rocked!

  • Prince who?

  • jesse! naw jerome

  • 666 likes, 13 dislikes

    wtf

  • @mothball50 LOL evil shit

  • Ya'll youngsters don't know nothing about this real music from the 80s, I doesn't have any cussing in it; This is real music; They didn't dogg women out in the 80s ......I love this song

  • Hard to think of JJ as being a Grandfather. he is eternally that kat who was a part of the time and was one of the coolest members of the Time. I jammed this song and Can You Help Me. Still playin em today.

  • Get it in Jesse!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • @nuLoveAnthony Your Granddad is one of the best guitar players ever. I have all of his recordings. Check him out on Can You Help Me, Free World, I Just Want to Get To Know You, Lovestruck. I can tell you a lot about him.

  • Its looks like a Prince wanna be to me. smh

  • @aqiylm62 Jesse Johnson was the original guitarist in the Prince-discovered group The Time. All those Prince-related acts that were part of the Minneapolis Sound -- Morris Day, Andre Cymone, even the women like Vanity and Appolonia -- all looked like sort of clones of Prince.

  • Hey, my name is Anthony Johnson, I'm 17. Jesse Johnson is my grandfather. I never realized how famous/good he was. I haven't talked to him since his daughter (my aunt) Tamica Johnson passed away. But he currently lives in California and is doing good. He's a cool guy, I remember on christmas when I was five he sent me a scooter:) haha I'm proud to have him as a g-pa

  • @nuLoveAnthony your grandfather is one of the most underrated musicians of the 80's true genius when he plays the guitar

  • @nuLoveAnthony That's pretty sweet dude! I wonder have you ever met Prince because of that... I adore Prince. JJ is great also :D

  • @nuLoveAnthony

Hard to think of JJ as being a Grandfather. he is eternally too "cool" Still jam this song and "can you help me".

  • @nuLoveAnthony man that is absolutely awesome... your grand dad is an incredible guitarist and oozes so much style coolness and panache.. particularly hes debut album and this track on the single version which plays over 8 mins the guitar solo is mind blowing and the track Can You Help Me off the chain.. you have talent in your bloodline...

  • @nuLoveAnthony i LOVE your grandfather... yeahh.. i i wish i were you ^-^

  • @nuLoveAnthony Your grandfather is an incrediable guitar player. It's too bad we don't see more talents like him anymore.

  • @nuLoveAnthony Are you a musician as well?

  • @AngelaSingsNeoSoul I am, but more into the Hip Hop genre. I'm nowhere near as talented as he is, but that's definitely where I get it.

  • @nuLoveAnthony You know-You can always use him as a mentor. See how what he knows applies to what you do. Some secrets to the success of musicians are 1) they read 2) they study different genres of music. That is the key-that is what will help make you different and give you longevity. Your grand-pop may play funk and R&B... but he can stand with the best of the the rock guitarist that are out there too. Ask him if this is true.... Then ask him-WHEN ARE YOU GOING BACK TO ATLANTA!!!! :-)

  • @nuLoveAnthony Isn't he from Rock Island, IL - ask him about Quad Cities

  • @jimboedwardlee Yeah he is! I live in the Quad Cities right now (Davenport)

  • I had this cassette and every song on it was awesome and you can hear the Prince influence on every track. But Jesse expanded on what he learned from Prince the The Time.

  • @maypuppet I agree,I played the heck out of mine.

  • Oh, oh, oh!!! Jesse was so cute rocking pink.

  • My name is jesse johnson! Amazing what you find when looking up your name

  • jesse was a legit rythim guitar player

  • NO TALENT? Man Jesse and The Reveiw came to Milwaukee back in the day ...and rocked the joint!

  • For all yall with the negative comments apparently you didnt follow the Paisely Park move; they all worked together thats why the sound and style is so similiar and he can funk that guitar. WHATCHA KNOW!

  • Man that bring back memories! LOL

  • This is what Prince would sound and look like if he had NO talent....Jesse Johnson is a Looser... what time is it EL OOH OOH S E R, WHAT TIME IS IT? Time for jesse to stop pretending his PRN...lol

  • prince wanna be...

  • PINKY NIGGA!

  • Roger Troutman or Prince ??? kkkkkkkkkkk

  • This is that shit Charlie Murphy was talking about...the era when dudes were trying to look like women......the hair and the dress code was a little strange although they are wearing suits in the vid The Minneapolis sound and look caught on around the country thanks to the Time Prince Jesse(the time) and Alex

  • This was when music was funky and fun. I heart JJ

  • 11 people need their head examined

  • @RELEASEMANAGER As stated before make that 13 ppl with no sense of musical taste

  • That looks like some Morris Day Moves . . . . . . Hmmmmmm

  • @cnclark68 he was the lead guitar in the original TIME and stole a couple of guys when he went solo...he watched alot of Morris Day moves and Alexander O'neal as well..

  • @dejay1507 yep

  • "i was only 5 surrounded by alot of mexicans some whites all partying to this at my house dancing ,i would poplock at the age of 5makin some people mad cuz they girl thought i was cute just some kid at 5 poplocking to this ,wow memories ,i seen cocaine, weed ,naked girls etc..fights stabbing all around this time this song was a hit, then krush groove led me into the whole hiphop movement ,i never looked back ,the street i lived on was oak st,in sm cali

  • A bad ass song! just goes to show how deep the talent pool was in Minneapolis at that time, just about anybody in The Time could form their own band and make hits.

If you watch groups like Ready for The World videos you can see how they studied these guys.

  • this is back when (talent was talent) i'm a blue's hard rock older guy but loved jess, still have those 33rpm album's. icannot and will never understand those (idol this and idol that) tv show's . if you got a raspy voice and can (sing ) someone else's song's and you got 3 people with zero talent whatsoever judgeing , well there it is

  • absolutely >

show up the time of 80s :=) thats whywe love 80s 4ever

  • cut em jessie

  • I remember listening to this on my walkman on the P2 (Federal Triangle) on the way to my DC summer job...

  • I remember listening to this on my Sony Walkman, on 93KYS while walking to the mall after school, lol.

  • At the time, Jesse was probably the only cat that could rock the pink outfit. Still the cut. I still play this album from time to time... Check out his latest called "VERBAL PENETRATION VOLS. 1 & 2 " it is a great collection. " Bare My Naked Soul" is damned good too.

  • Classic jerry curl!! Classic!

  • Only 3 guys can rock this style and still can, Jesse. Morris and Prince.

  • Prince Light..;-)

    But, damn... brings back memories

  • "Flash FM...where the guyyys wear more makeup than tha girrrlllls". Man I love Jesse's music, it took me a while to find this album on cd as well as Shockadelica

  • Jesse was the only guy who could play a pink guitar wearing a pink suit and look cool doing it !

  • @phade2blaq HIM AND PRINCE

  • @phade2blaq what about Andre 3000?

  • @phade2blaq There are 13 ppl who dislike this song they must think he looked corny as well

  • I just found out yesterday that Jesse Johnson did this song. I had no clue. When I was a kid it used to come on the radio and I always liked it lol.

  • 10 PEOPLE ARE COMPLETE IDIOTS. -djяaghʞѕтaя™(ill!)®♂

  • @myspacedjraghkstar

you can make it 11 idiots now, some morons don't know good music if it kicked them in the nuts.

  • THIS WAS THE JAM BACK IN THE DAY

  • I thought Morris Day sung this all these years lol?

  • I thought Morris Day sung this?

  • Dudes be wearing as much eye liner as the girls back then.

  • @oldschool1

    *charlie Murphey voice*

"This was about the time when the dude who looked most like a female was pickin up all the women. We be sittin back muggin like this bitch...gettin all the bitches!"

  • My fellow honky bro on the drums with a shag!

  • Greatness

  • ahhhh...this really makes me miss high school, my boys, breaking and all those chicks i use to think i wanted!! THANKS! WISH WE COULD BRING THE 80'S BACK SOMETIMES, YOU KNOW?

  • Brothers called their mullets (Shags)

  • omg. his look was so 80's and so freakin totally hot!!

  • Jheri Curl spray & white collars are a bad combination.

In fact Jheri Curl is bad all by itself.... ;-)

Jesse is still a bad-ass no doubt.....On the one Y'all

  • is that prince?

  • Prince is one of the greatest artists of all time, but he was an egomaniac. When the Time started upstaging him, he tried to make trouble for the group. He finally killed the Time by firing Jimmy & Terry. I meean yeah they were replaced but it wasn't the same.

  • would be nice to hear this in a digitally remastered update version

  • oh yes...jesse is the man as well..classic stuff here..that minn movement was like a run away train..alexander o'neil/cherelle etc..

  • If math was Danielle Id marry her

  • My first concert ever! It rocked!

  • @yamahabb400 Yes, he did! Prince ruled the roost back then. The difference is he wore pink a lot.

  • This whole video looks like a comedy spoof of Purple Rain.

  • @ANOTHERHOLEINYOHEAD You know I was thinkin the same thing lmao.

  • Back in 1985, even the brothers had mullets. Loved this album.

  • @Maxx61 Yeah, but made mullets look COOL!

  • @Maxx61 the hair style was call "the shag " the ladies loved it, bro

  • @Maxx61 haha! Jerry curl mullets =-P

  • Chilli sauce! Hit me...

  • Jesse was a hard to work for guy, $250.00 a week to rehearse, 8 hours a day. Great player and composer. Cutie brought him down.Wonder what he is doing these days. Can you tell he loved James brown?

  • @witchman1 Jesse still performs doing small venues now, but he still packs them in.

  • My SENIOR year in High school. OOO OOO OOO! :-)

  • @therealraybaby thats cool..i wish i was a high school when all this funk was goin on!!! time machine anybody??

  • How did the drumma breathe and smoke at the same time ?????? lol he was into his FUNK'KAY DRUM"N LOL those were the C O O L day's right hea !

  • Remember what "Charlie Murphy" said about the 80's.. The dude that looked most like a bitch was getting all the girls.. Lmao!!

  • xD drummer smokin

  • lookin at them white women......

  • Greatness

  • I'm looking at Jesse and thinking that, besides the curl, that he could be related to Morris, Prince, and Andre. I know that none of the above mentioned are related, but they all have similiar features, besides the curls. Jesse is a nice looking man.

  • @loveit2073 That was the concept Prince was going for -- creating a group of protege acts that cloned his musical style and his look, similar to what George Clinton did with the P-Funk mob offshoots. Morris Day, Andre Cymone, Jesse Johnson -- even the female acts like Vanity and Appolonia -- reminded you of some variation of Prince.

  • you probably won't believe me but I'm Jesse's grandson, I don't really listen to this music, i was just seein what my grandpa was doin' back then. He's good!

  • This was the SONG!

Love the chorus of this song... makes me want to just DANCE!

  • I love his music but I HATE how he's bitin' off of Purple Rain with the Blonde chick. Then he tells the black lady .."I don't want to take you home..." No Wonder they hardly (if ever), showed this on BET. BTW, the blonde chick can't even clap to the beat. WTF, Jesse?

  • @vaniti06 I can't really listen right now, but it sounds like he is saying "I dont want to waste your time and mine by playing these little love-puppy games. I want to be your man, Baby." Happy Thanksgiving, Vaniti.

  • Damn the guys were fine back then. The whole culture of Prince, Vanity 6 ... they'll never be anybody badder.

  • why is he imitating prince, he is such a good player but this is cheap

  • @haskehoefzzz No- He came from the Minneapolis sound at the time. Prince started it but there were tons of groups who collaborated with him. It was like House music in Chicago and Go-Go music in Washington DC at the time. Or grung music in Seattle that came a few years later.

  • Prince with a tan

  • The only guy that can wear pink and get away with it, many have tried but failed

  • Classic self-contained all-male R&B band of the 80's, and this one with the Minneapolis sound and flair. A local band I played in in the 80s modeled itself after The Time. We played on the East Coast (Carolinas and VA mostly) and had a lot of fun.

  • LOL Prince's clone ;-) but Prince is The MASTER !

  • Greatness

  • I HAD FORGOT ABOUT THIS SONG
