Use the sharp, back edge of the knife just in case they get too close? Too close to use the rest of the knife? That's kinda of the point of a knife/dagger in the first place. And I'd like them better if they were made out of wood. It may cost more, but easier to make more elaborate shapes and details and you can be a tiny bit more carefree when bashing stuff.

why don't you try making a roughly life size dragon spear from runescape they look like they would be about 6ft - 7ft that would be a bit of a challenge and would take alot of paper hardened and used for layering it.
