The whole movie is just beautiful like this. A small town utopia of friendly facinating people who all come together to celebrate their differences. What I wouldn't give to live in a place like that.
@transonicbuoy1: "We are clever here. We know. Truly. This post should have 8m hits. But it is reserved for the very clever - and DB meant otherwise."
TSB -- Talk about being self-congratulatory! Furthermore, this clip was not designed/intended as a stand-alone. Who cares how many "hits" this clip generates?? People should rent / view the film. Of course, that would require an extended attention-span.
John Goodman is a tightly packed over abundance of real and raw talent! Hell Yeah I love how he has his way with this fabulous tune! Thanks for sharing the upload, bookr 98!
I have great respect for the Heads, but it was a huge miscalculation on Byrne's part not to release all these great film performances on the soundtrack. I've never liked Byrne's version because John Goodman's is the version I want to hear.
@saskabush2006 it wasn't Byrne's fault, but the music company. Byrne also wanted the performances from the movie but they didn't agree and wanted TH to sing it.
Favorite favorite favorite -- the versions you can buy are just not as good either. I hate the woman harmony on the rarities album and the violin sounds off. It's just all kinds of busy and drowns his voice. And I love David, but this song is John's without a doubt. His deep but sweet bearish voice is golden!
@electrodude9 To each their own I guess. I prefer the Goodman version. His voice is untrained and simple and suits the content of the song a bit more. An everyday man.
Even David Byrne prefers this version over his own. He has been quoted as saying that not having Goodman's recording on the soundtrack is one the biggest mistakes he ever made.
@PaulCastle001 I assume you are joking. I like John's enthusiasm, but to say he has pitch problems would be kind. He's totally off key which I think is probably the intended effect.
I looked all over for this version, and I swear its on itunes now in some random place. I watched this movie as a kid and it really stayed with me. This song and dream operator.
John Goodman has a perfect voice for this countrified vesrion of the song. "True Stories" is one of those quirky movies that cheers me up no matter how bad my day had been.
John Goodman has a perfect voice for this countrified vesrion of the song. "True Stories" is one of those quirky movies that cheers me up no matter how bad my day had been.
This is a great movie--John Goodman's greatest role, plus featuring the much missed Spalding Gray, Pops Staples and many other actors who really shine in their roles. I wish and hold out hope that they will release a CD with the original cast recordings (I especially love Goodman's People Like Us and Pops Staples' Papa Legba). I did have the 45 and played only the B side. Somehow Byrne singing "growing big as a house" doesn't work. It was Goodman's song all the way.
Does anyone know if the 45 includes the growl that John Goodman (Louis the dancing bear) lets out around 22 seconds into this clip? Either way I reckon I will buy it.
Goodman was born to sing this song. You believe every word when Goodman sings it, compared to Byrne's recording, which, while awesome, has that "I can't help it, I'm David Byrne" sarcastic edge to it. (Am I making any sense?) [And please, *NO* "Stop Making Sense" jokes!]
David Byrne's version isn't good; it's barely phoned in. He sounds like he sang it after a half dozen whiskey sours. The first version of this I ever had was Goodman's 45 B side, and it was one of my faves. When I bought the album and it had David Byrne's crap version on it, I was furious. I felt so ripped off. He should have been big enough to put Goodman's version on the album and take the writing credit.
Byrne actually was furious that the label made him sing this song on the record. It was his intention to have goodman do it, I mean it was written for him.
That's fascinating. It's a shame they insisted on the other version on the album. Yeah, John Goodman's version is just unforgettable. I listened to it walking to high school for years.
great song. I just remembered the part in the film where John Goodman is practicing this song, and when he comes to a word he can't remember, he says "meow meow meow", etc... anyone remember that hillarious part? good stuff.
Love the movie, love the music, but David Byrne - genius he may be - deserves a sound kick in the ass for never releasing a cast soundtrack album! Pops Staples performance of Papa Legba (you hear it ending at the start of this clip) is one of the greatest performances of 1980s musical cinema. And Goodman's version of People Like Us comes close, too.
Gosto deste filme. Ele me passa sempre uma sensação de alegria.Fico com vontade de estar viajando pelo Texas e conhecendo estas "deliciosas" personagens!
...we don't want freedom, we don't want justice, we don't want justice, we just want someone to love...what good is freedom? god laughs at people like us. so brilliant...
I miss the days when John Goodman was just a little pudgy, instead of the sack of flab he has degenerated to... it's going to end badly for him i fear, and we'll be losing a good one.
John Goodman is a pretty good singer! I think he was a very integral part of the movie "True Stories". It just shows how normal and nice things are in a small town, and how awful things are in a big city(if you live in a big city and can see the difference).
