I agree, the ending is sad, but at the same time, its got its magic, like the ending or Moulin Rouge. Yes, at the end they both die, but they are together at the end, with the one person in the world they want to be with. I can think of far worse fates. And, unlike the end of Moulin Rouge, one of them doesn't have to live the rest of their life knowing that they will never be as happy as they were for that fleeting time they were together.
