@richardhaw no its not common sense. no one is asking sinhalese to let the tamils dominate. but there should at least be secularism (not budhhism as state language). remember that tamils were there even before sri lanka became independent. so they are as much sri lankan as the sinhalese. they are not mere guests. tamils should be allowed to speak their language and they should equal opportunities (not more or less) in education and jobs.

@richardhaw look at india. it is far more diverse in terms of religion, language, ethniticity, colour, cuisine, culture, clothing, etc. how does it stay together? the answer is secularism (even though 80% are hindu), allowing all regions to speak their own language (even though majority speak hindi). in fact, india is proud of its diversity. if sri lanka was proud of its diversity, there would be no problem. sinhalese should learn to be proud of being sri lankans, not just sinhalese.

@richardhaw in fact, look at singapore. they have 4 official languages (chinese, tamil, english and malay) and is secular. this is despite the fact that 70% are chinese. do the tamils create any trouble in singapore? the answer is none! all the communities live happily together. i think the sinhalese majority in sri lanka has a lot to learn from the chinese majority in singapore.

Neverthe less, Tamils are a civilized race in Asia...All around Sri LAnka are civilized people...I was bloody angry for some Australian guy compareing Sri LAnka to africa...that is why I was racist. When Sri LAnkan people will allow black power n media to rule their youth, it will be like africa anyways. Sri LAnkan youth must be influenced by strong culture. Thank you for enlightening me. I have always wondered what the route cause was of this Tamil Tiger uprising. Now I know. In future, Sri Lankans need a government that will have a structure that will harbour ALL NATIVE LANGUAGES, and not CENTRALIZED to harbour just one or two languages but a DYNAMIC WAY of governance. And no political parties based on race and religion. THIS IS WHAT MAKES A COUNTRY STRONG, or an empire (one of the reasons also why the British were losing control)
