  • i gotta question is she belting that or is that whistle notes its always hard to tell with patti

  • i love how she added that growl on it ...she and karen always doiong that on c6 and d6 and d#6

  • guys this is way better than rebbeca black LOL!

  • That was a B5. You should fix the title.

  • I don't think that is a High C. It's close though. It's the B right below.

  • That was a B5

  • its a B5, #fail.

  • LOL . Cosby !

  • they better go head and sing!!!!!

  • that wasnt high...

  • @1037pm oh yes a stupid comment from a stupid person... SOPRANO C ISN'T HIGH? LOL yup because your high right now righting a stupid comment like that lmao

  • @gaylolful You write "righting a stupid comment" and call me stupid?

Dude, stfu, seriously, you have no room to talk

  • @1037pm Um...wow okay I noticed that after I wrote it LOL, but anyways at least I'm not as stupid as you...you actually believed the note wasn't high as if you could hit the note LAAAAME!!!

  • @gaylolful Interesting thing is I can hit that note...and my whole original comment was sarcastic, way to make it a big thing by taking it so seriously.

  • @1037pm And way to make it a big deal by saying it in the first place as if I'm supposed to know you were being sarcastic...Hello it's through a computer and this is Youtube...people are stupid :P Wait why didn't you just say you were sarcastic in the first place? It would have saved you a lot of time lol ummmm yeah....

  • @gaylolful Because your misspellings were to repulsive to let go

  • @1037pm Pathetic and lame....:P

  • @1037pm don't worry about those who don't believe you lol. They mean well

  • @gaylolful what you and many others don't realize (and I was like that too) is that there are many ladies who can get to C6 and higher, just by their natural voice types, whether they are good singers or not, but we may never catch them doing it, and even when they do, we think they used falsetto/head voice because such sopranos have a relatively heady upper register. Honestly to many ladies, this is like: big deal? because they and their friends and other sopranos they know can do it easily

  • @okebaram But that doesn't mean that the note isn't high though right? Most of the girls in my choir struggle to hit the note.....or they can't hit it at all...

  • @gaylolful true. It is definitely a very high note!

  • @okebaram I'm not sure I quite get you. Are you saying that it is normal for most women to hit this note in mixed voice, as Patti Labelle does? Because it is definitely not and is something that requires tons of training and effort. However, if you are talking on terms of head voice (completely and totally different) (oh and BTW, females don't technically use the falsetto register, but it is still a very controversial topic) then it is much much less difficult for women to hit than a mixed C6.

  • @okebaram However, it is still a very difficult note to hit and something that many girls, especially girls who are underdeveloped, untrained, or just plain bad (this is probably the case for @gaylolful), have a whole lot of trouble with. In my experience, common ranged, average voiced women will be comfortable up to the G5 (this is in head voice, BTW), and start to have trouble beginning with A5. In short, C6 is a very difficult note to hit, especially to hit well.

  • @SeiyaRonin You are right. In full/mixed voice, average women stop at C5 I think. But there are more ladies, than average singers realize sometimes, whose natural ranges allow them to be able to get up to C6 in full/mixed. They are still rare! But when some of such sopranos are immersed in a musical culture & are constantly around trained, really-high sopranos, they may sort-of limit the classification as "soprano" to only high sopranos who can hit a full C6, and fail to see how big a deal it is

  • @okebaram It stops dead at F#4 :)

  • @stardusth2o You mean your range stops at F#4?

  • @okebaram Lol no I mean that complete chest voice for female stops at F#4.

  • I Love it...I remember this episode so well.

  • That was funny how she hit that high note effortless like that!

  • it's B5

  • Phylicia brought it down to the Soulful Fields and Miss Patti took it up to the Heavens....LMAO!

  • I love the HD quality :) Thanks for the upload :)

  • That is funny!!

  • but there is also a short C6 in mixed voice at 0:21!!!!!!!!!

  • it's B5!!!!

  • Was this on the Cosby Show or A Different World?

  • This was another Show called "Cosby", that ran from 1996 to 2000 where Phylicia Rashad played the character "Ruth" and Bill Cosby "Lucas". The Cosby Show rann from 1984 - 1992.

  • Interesting comments about chest voices. I have been told that because I can sing Tenor more comfortable than Alto, that I have a throat voice. What is the difference? All I know is that when I sing at a more comfortable level (tenor) I feel it more in my tummy than my throat when I sing (alto?soprano).

  • ya singing from your throat is bad. it makes u sound airy like britney spears. if strains your voice which is why it feels like its in ur throat. ur supposed to sing from your diaphram ( your tummy) not ur throat. that's what they're talking about

  • Stop hatin, Patti can sing, technique be damned

  • nowhere near a C6... i wouldn't be surprised if it was as low as G#

  • No, it was NEAR a C6, just not quite. It was a B5, so pretty close. But yes, that labeling should still be corrected.

  • true.. Bb slideing up to a B5

  • its a bflat....with a bflat / g#/ F run down

  • she sustain Bb5 and slighty reaches to a B5.. its not a C6

  • yep, to me it was sometning between B5 and C6, but drfenitely not C6, nyway, this note is amazing to me.

  • that no sound high to me!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • lol it dosent sound high to me eitherr, lol!

  • Turn your volume up at 0:18-0:19, C6! She sounded a little hoarse.

  • What show was this?

  • i think the old bill cosby show

Rashād is best known for another television role, that of attorney Clair Huxtable on the NBC sitcom The Cosby Show. The show starred Bill Cosby as obstetrician Cliff Huxtable, and focused on their life with their five children.

When Cosby returned to TV comedy in 1996 with CBS's Cosby, it one the two

  • i just measured it with a piano. dont nobody give a fuck about that bullshit. must be corny white people. shit, just worry about the bitch be able to blow. all that high note shit, who cares. can patti bring her ass on stage and tear it up and be done? thats all you gotta worry about. all that ol high g bullshit. who gives a damn. hahahaha

  • True but she shows her ass when she sings.

  • i'm black and i wanted to hear her do the top C in this vid, but tbf i am slightly obsessive compulsive

  • that was a high G

  • it's a g but she temporarily glides up to a c

  • I don't know that much about voice, aside from what I've read on the internet and researched in books, but even I know that's not a "High C." High C refers to where the whistle register starts (C6), right? It still sounds good though.

  • No, whistle register starts higher then that....

  • Funny!!!

  • ahahaha...teh guy in the blue jacket ran inside when she hit tht note

  • its bill cosby

  • i kno but at the time tht i wrote this i 4got his name...but thx

  • it is really B5, just a half step lower than soprano C...impressive either way

  • ur right

  • CANNOT BELIEVE SHE SUNG THOSE NOTES SO EASILY! That's soprano C not even high c, right?

  • Ok, that's not soprano c, but it is super super high, and that is chest voice. Can someone measure the note?

  • its impressive but the C was not in chest more so like in her mix the 3 following notes were in chest though

  • No sir, it was in chest. Don't get caught up with the flood of youtubers hopping around tagging stuff as chest or head voice or, worst of all, "mix" which they have redefined to label a made-up concept, when they are not sure, and don't know what they are talking about.

  • lol well I havent based it on any youtube tags or misinfo.. Ive studied voice for sometime now and I just can tell those notes thats she sings are not in her chest I can emulate the same technique and hit the same note and it seems like im in chest but I know very well Im not lol Chaka Khan uses the same technique but its still not really singing in chest and Aretha Franklin doesnt sing in chest anymore either lol so what ur opinion on that oke lol

  • You think the notes are not in chest and that you can emulate them, because you cannot tell the difference. I can tell the difference, and I would tell you that every one of your emulated notes are falsetto or head. This notes were in chest, and Aretha Franklin sings in chest voice. I could explain to you why it's likened to head or false. Anyway, whether you feel like believing me or not is up to you. I'm still right and I'm not going to argue with you

  • @okebaram You don't even know what you're talking about. Who are you tell people what's right and wrong?

  • Ummmm I happen to know what I am talking about, but so do you and others... at least to some extent. No wrongs :) Just know that my use of the term "chest voice" is the layman usage, which is simply full voice, and you may be defining it as something else

  • b-flat, stretching to a very "low" b at best.. not a c.

  • You're right! I just measured it with a piano.

  • She hits the high C just a little bit before 0:19. Leading into it she was on a B Natural/Cb Flat.

  • That was cute.....

  • Stop comparing! Simply different voices with different techs!

  • Wait okay Im LOst why are we comparing mariah to PATTI again?

  • SHE'S THE BEST

  • this was my all time favorite show, being BLACK this was always sumthing too look forward too

  • funniest fued ever LMAO

  • Look for Monica Naranjo.

  • lmao at Bill's exit. HAHAHA!

  • I LOVE THIS. LOL@ Patti when she hears Phylicia start humming the melody, "sing girl."

    **FALLS OUT**

  • sorry but that whistle register ain't worth a shit! patti could kill mariah anyday even when she (mariah) was in her prime! I find patti's high belting a thousand times more impressive than any of mariah's whistle notes.

  • patti's high notes sounds lika a 'strong falsetto' [she's a female version of the BEEGEES way of singing". Patti cannot compete w/ mariah carey on her prime! all registers from lowest to highest are beautiful. And I never heard Patti sing 'beautfully' without using a pure chest voice unlike MC. Patti's strength is this high strong falsetto sounding 'mixed' voice.

  • patti cannot compete with mariah in her prime? are you kidding? don't be stupid please. patti's voice is way more stronger and powerful than mariah.and actually mariah's range is nothing compared to that

  • i agree patti will put m.c to shame. patti is the godmother and mariah carey is influenced bye her. don't test patti, none of these bitches want it. mc.c. is a good singer, that whistle high note is her prize. but paati has the "FORCE", no1 can c her

  • @bossnmeround I do not agree at all, she will not put mc to shame, there are only two singers out there who are technically better singers than Mariah is, they are Aretha Franklin and Barbara Streisand. Patti is just a screamer.

  • how many has she had patti has over 50 does she roll on the floor and still considered as a lady a woman of class i she over 60 and look like she is twenty how many grand notes has she had i myself have heard her and it sond like a whitney on crack trying to do ooooooooooooooooooooooooooh so

  • sorry but that whistle register ain't worth a shit! patti could kill mariah anyday even when she (mariah) was in her prime! I find patti's high belting a thousand times more impressive than any of mariah's whistle notes.

  • This is the Cosby Show.

  • what show is this from???

  • 'Cosby' It was a good show...at least I had liked the sitcom.

  • that's not C6.... bitch....

  • yes it is folk

  • Chaka Khan can hit notes from Bb2 till B5 in full voice..check out my clip..but thats only on the records..off the records she can go lower than A2 till C6 in pure connected full voice..she's a perfectly pitched contralto

  • you are on every patti video talkin about chaka khan...you're such a LOSER!!!

  • who r u? LOL

  • Chaka is the BITCH! You best be recognising!

  • Is this a video of Chaka? why are we always putting the legendary black divas against each other vocally? This is Patti, go post cpmments about Chaka on Chaka's video

  • and Patti is somewhere between the two. A great communicator at times, capable of producing incredible chest voice notes, but still for albeit an unknown reason not quite at Aretha's or Mariah's level.

  • All three are great. Patti's strength is as a live performer. Aretha's best work was in the studio in the 60's. Very powerfuel. Mariah put out some great stuff earlier, i.e. pre-hip hop hoochie diva era. She does have a wide range, but the upper stuff is of poor acoustic quality. What makes Patti's range so impressive is that most of it is in full voice, not whistle.

  • mariah can sing higher than patti but pati's note has more power

  • i definitely agree. Patti's voice is amazing. I mean not that they're the same, but Patti and Tina, their voices are full of so much emotion compared to Mariah's. They throw their souls into it and Mariah is good, but I just see too much "performance" in it. I could actually believe what Patti and Tina sang. I can hit a whistle note, but I can't sing. If hitting a whistle note means you have talent then I've got tons, but I know I can't sing. lol.

  • true true mariah is more impressive than expressive vocally

  • totally agree with you. Plus mariah sings throaty all the time, it drives me nuts!

  • @aquarianbabe Well, Mariah can hit a whistle note and sing. lol

  • @aquarianbabe You seem to be a hater, hitting the whistle the way that Mariah does is actual talent. Patti and Tina are screamers and Mariah to me sings better than they do. Patti has more natural soul than Mariah does but Mariah sings better.

  • @aquarianbabe @bossnmeroung you're both dumb flops.

  • heard all the albums of Mariah, Patti and Aretha Franklin..here are the results: Aretha takes the cake as the most emotive vocalist, able to communicate the message in any songs with clear resounding "soul", Mariah Carey clearly has the widest range of the three and produces the most intricate riffs and runs

  • Don't get me wrong, I love Aretha Franklin. And I have to admit I only have one album from Patti and none of Aretha's, so Im just going by what Ive seen here on youtube, but It's only Patti's videos on here that send chills down my spine(Forever young, Her Tribute to Aretha singing Ain't No way, Her tribute to Diana Ross, ect.)

  • i agree. Aretha can sing. i myself am not interested in Aretha's voice. not that it is common, but it doesnt send chills down my spine. but patti's live performances shoots electrowaves down my spine having my eyes glued to the screen! i dont know. that's just my input. not trying to bash anybody

  • Yes it is easy to do whistle, but what is not asy is to have this ability, but for those who have it, yes it is easy. Mariah's tone is way more beautiful even on F5 and G5, hjer tone don't became thiner. Pattie is asoprano so she can belt higher, but her projection and her tone a more irritating!

  • On the one hand you are right, Edrings. But on the other, you're talking about two great bel canto singers with extreme coloratura. That's not what this is about...

  • please stop comparing these uncertainly singers hitting the soprano c. if you wanna see and watch the true divas just search "erna sack and robin mado" then kill me if i'm wrong.

  • it is "only" a B5 but it certainly shows that she can do higher. You should change the "more" section and the title since it is not a soprano high C. I have one from labelle in my soprano C video though.

  • you should hear rachelle ferrell do her high notes in her rich buttery voice. maybe you've heard her already....

  • yes mc is better but she can't above miss regine velasquez. every body already knew who is regine velasquez in a live concert to one can defeat her here in youtube. but if we talk of popularity mc is very known bec. she is born in big america. what if regine is same here born in big america like mc? just search reasons and paraisong parisukat of regine song. i swear mc can't do until she old.

  • regine velasquez is power than mariah carey, regine always hits g5 , g#5 sometimes b5. search "paraisong parisukat, i dont want miss a thing, and reasons after u heard compare to mariah carey and patti labelle. then you can easily decide who's the really top singer.

  • Check out "Chaka Khan Will You Love Me live AOL" 2007...she hits a C6 in full voice in that performance.. Chaka is a contralto and her full voice range is wider than Patti

  • WTF?? LOSER!!! GO AWAY FROM PATTI's VIDEOS!!!

  • I know what you mean, Beyoncè can hit F#5 and G5 in chest voice live and not sounding strained at all. And she's a mezzo, not a soprano.

  • That's true. Squealing a note in the whistle range though is not nearly as demanding as belting something extremely high in chest. Most of the so-called "whistlers" have extremely limited chest range. Like Christina Aguilera can get up to G6 in falsetto (albeit usually flat) but in full voice, she's lucky if she gets to E5. There are GUYS who can sing above G6 in falsetto/whistle...it's not difficult.

  • totally agree with u.

belting in the chest voice like jennifer hudson demands much more that the whistle register..

  • it's a matter of tastes. For me whistle is not real singing, and plus I don't like Mariah's style and tone. But it's just me.

  • I don't know why some people think that whistle makes a better singer. It's easier than what you think. What's difficult is to hit chest notes in the fifth octave and do it well all the time.

  • Exactly. Almost anyone can shriek a high pitch in disconnected register...even Christina Aguilera has done it, the girl who can barely get to E5 in full voice. It's not hard.

  • I always said Christina is not that good technically. She's hugely overrated: her tecnique is about screaming, that's why she screeches and rasps all the high chest notes, and often lips them. And that's why she has to put the mic away: because you would hear the creak too loud.

  • Umm... Christina has actually SCREAMED in like three songs (Fighter, A Man's World, and Make Over). Many of her musical collaborators have praised her vocal technique and personal vocal knowledge. And she pulls the mic away because she is freaking LOUD. I went to her Stripped concert sat in the eighth row and could still hear her without the mic while the band was blasting and the crowd was yelling.

  • she screams and strains all the time. And singers who pull the mic too far away from their mouths they do it because they know they're pushing too hard and they could sound too strained and their pitch could not be perfect.

  • No, singers do it to maintain a consistent volume level when they hit notes that need to be louder, it's called light and shade!

Most singers do it when singing live,

  • This is not true. Most singers who pull the mic too far away either have a poor understanding of the mic or poor sound engineers who don't know enough to set limiters and expanders on the sound of a powerful singer. Huge voices get even bigger when on the high notes of a song climax. When you pull the mic far away you lose all harmonics, especially those in the lower range (the bottom). It has nothing to do with pushing too hard. Volume comes from the natural shape of the throat and palate.

  • whoever says that mariah can go higher than patti is wrong if u dont belive me watch Mariah carey and patti labelle got to be real" Patti drowns Miriah's precious whistle register in chest voice AND does it while laughing while mariah is almost dying and she isn't even heard

  • umm you clearly know nothing about vocal range. in chest voice yes patti can go higher but overall mariah can reach notes an octave above what patti hits. true patti drowns mariah that's because the higher you go, the sound of your voice gets lighter and lighter.

  • What you're forgetting is whistle register is easy, chest mix and head voice takes a long time to get with a degree of strength and power. Whistle is really just falsetto, it doesn't really count. Mariah carrey has crappy tone anyway, range isn't everything, tone is what is important, and patti has a much stronger and richer tone.

  • Whistly registry is easy? And when is the last time you acquired this registry. I most certainly see that most singers don't display this gift of easiness. I am male, and i have the ability to produce notes on the whistle scale. It is not easy holding or keeping the tone of a whistle note, that takes a lot of work and endurance building.

  • can Mariah hit them in head or chest voice? Because if they are in chest voice i'm afraid you are mistaken because patti labelle holds the record for highest belt

  • I did this today at class and everyone yelled at me.Actually it was a sit-in not lesson.

  • Pattie has not 5 octaves, what is her highest note in head voice?????? D6, or a little higher, if she don't have a whistler register, it's impossible that she have 5 octaves, as Mariah, or it signifies tht she has to go lower than a man!!! hihihihi!

  • she has a much higher CONNECTED range than mariah though. mariah's upper range consists of mostly whistle register notes, which technically can't be counted towards her range since whistle register is FALSE, meaning it can't connect with chest and head.

  • That's absolutly false, Mariah has her whistler register connected to her head voice, you can heard that in Fly Like a Bird, she begin in head and finish in whistler. And It count in her range, even professional claimed that she has 5 octave range. Mariah can go higher in head because her whistle is connected to her head voice. Don't matter if it's connected or not, only count the beauty of the result! Your argument is so fucking stupid to be polite.

  • LOL, "connected" my foot! That is DISCONNECTED head voice, similar in principle to FALSETTO. Where exactly do you hear the connection in "Fly Like a Bird"? Just because she jumps into it quickly after a chest note??? She did the SAME thing in "Vanishing" live from SNL, and you could HEAR her break into it, much like falsetto.

  • I read somewhere(a forum talking about Patti's range) that while she was taping a performance on a tv show, she accidently slipped into whistle register

  • whistle register?

    what does that mean?

    obviosly its VERY high... lol.

  • Lol yeah

  • Aretha has a 4 octave range,Pattie has a 5 octave range...they have been singing for yrs. shouldn't they know what their ranges are. Aretha range was higher back in the day but was destroyed by smoking..If you want to hear range beyond range check out LaShun Pace...the girl has range baby and is Dynamic

  • As for you talking about octaves. You better listen to a lady called Diamanda Galas. You will learn the limits of human voice.

  • Funny.

  • was this a song or what??

  • You know... it's really time that people awake from their fantasy of Mariah Carey having a 6-7-8 octave range. It's possible that she dosen't even have a 5 octave range. And I swear.. people are so obssessed with this nonsense of the "whistle register", to the point that they are requiring that singers be able to screech in order to be considered a capable singer, lol.. pathetic.

  • From A2 to G#7(live on emotions at arsenio hall and MTV music awards 1991), it's what, it's 5 octaves.(ok for 1/2 note, it's 4.99!!!

Maybe Mariah can't sing as high in chest, but her voice usedto be majestic and she is really 5 octaves range!!!But I agree that Whistle register is just a bonus, you can't build a career by only singing on whistle tone!

  • Actually that performance is not in the original key, the song is recorded in C major and usually Mariah performs it in Bb major.

Which would mean there's no G or G# in that key, the highest note would either be Bb, D or F. And the highest note in those two performances is actually F7.

Mariah has gone as low as G#2 however though in that live performance of "You and I".

Anyways, Mariah's voice is great 5 octaves or not.

  • False, I'm sorry but in Emotions, the Hight notes at the ends of Arsenio hall and MTV are G#7, it was i the Guiness Book, and maybe in chest voice she don't sing the original key but in whistle, this is the original key and more, so it's higher than F7, since year everybody knows that and you you say it's not the case. THIS IS G#7!

  • No...sorry, but both in the Arsenio Hall and in the VMA's she sings in the key of Bb instead of C. In the key of C the highest would have been G but since the key is Bb it has to be F7, a G#/Ab would mean she was out of tune.

  • OK, dude, I go to an opra website who has a complete section on "high notes" for oprah and pop singers and they alsosaid the note was G#7. You you only think but yo can't really hear, you say she sing lower in chest, so it is the same for whistle, and unfortunatly it is not the case, whstle has nothing to do wth chest, this is a vocal run, don't matter the key of the chest voice!

  • Yes, 5 octaves IF you account for whistle register notes, the quality of the notes.which are an extension of her falsetto. There are OPERA singers whose are connected to their head voice...not Mariah, and it's obvious just by the quality of the note.

and when did I ever say that she didn't do G#7?? She did it at the VMAs and on Arseni Hall. I never denied that!

  • Evidentally most people are not too busy thinking about a whistle registry making a capable singer. Most of the people who are supporting artists who have not one clue of what singing is. Look at the top selling artists right now and give me the names of the ones with whistle capability. U can't, they ain't there. So give us a little more credit for what we whistle lovers find as capable.

  • It is said Aretha and patti both have 4 octaves

  • Aretha had like 2 and a half back in the day.

  • No, Aretha has four octaves. I don't know how else I can tell you this, but remind you it's reported on most websites and that Aretha has at least twice the range of Ella Fitzgerald (who is two octaves) (That wasn't an ella fitzgerald bash either, I love ella, and I don't feel range makes a singer who they are, it's all about passion, soul, phrasing, and connecting to the listener) And ella and aretha both have that.

  • What song does Aretha sing above G5 in?

  • Her chest voice range is so high!!!!!!!!!!!

  • patti has a 3 octave range cant be any more than that sorry kids

  • Mariah has a 5 octave range if she had 8 she wud have the highest in the world and it is fact that she has a 5 and Adam Lopez has 7 octaves and Georgia brown leading with 8 octave range....lol patti doesnt hold the record for highest range she never did

  • Mariah has said also that she had an 8 octave vocal range, that doesn't make it true (or physically possible).

To have 5 octaves someone would have to be able to sing for example the low bass C (two octave below middle C) and the C over high C (3 octaves above middle C), or for a woman...to sing the C an octave below middle C and the last C of the piano. Do you think that's possible?

  • Mariah has never claimed to have 8 octaves. Other media sources always claim her to have that many.

  • Patti has a 5 octave range DEARIE! She said it her self..

  • Patti's wrong. She has around 3 octaves.

  • Damn you should go into music SINCE you know so much about PATTIS voice WHOM said it herself when she was on that chidren show " HI-Jinks" and she told them little kidas that she had a 5 octave range she was lying?? Mmmmm

  • I've seen that. But just because she said it doesn't mean it's true. agnellodei just explained it for you.

  • she hasn't performed anything over an E6 and the lowest she has sang is C#3, that's about 3 octaves and a quarter.

  • Hmm okay if you say so.

  • Watch all of the videos Patti singing the national Anthem, it's mind blowing

  • where does a Bb7 go in any song..so maybe she has a 5 octave range but she doesnt us the whole 5 octave

  • Patti can sing Past high C6 and does it many many many times.
