  • AMEN!!

  • wow this is so amateur .....

  • @codehendrix Did you happen to see the original taping of this show? The only thing amateur about the performance and the entire interview is the way THIS particular clip was recorded. The original is very clear, incredibly captivating and extremely informative. I'd highly recommend you checking it out....and believe it will not in anyway disappoint. I believe the reason you might feel this way is because of the quality of this clip ;-)

  • HypeRhymz Instead of trying to figure out who did what, why dont we just agree that they are all amazing artist in there own right and all have there own identity and created some of the best music ever. 1 second ago

  • Instead of trying to figurebout who did what, why dont we just agree that they are akl amazing artist in there own right and all hqve there own identity and created some of the best music ever.

  • I hope everyone has or wilcheck out Jesse Johnson latest CD VERBAL PENATRATION!! iF YOU LIKE HIS PASS STUFF THIS WILL KNOCK YOU OUT. It's a double cd by the way.

  • Everyone knows Jesse is my first cousin right? His father Jack Johnson (who just passed, RIP) is my uncle (brother to my father.) I am so proud to know Jesse!

  • Everytime I see Jesse, I feel like a thirteen year old girl again! I had an enormous crush on this man! I remember when he performed @ the Budweiser Superfest! I couldn't go because I was too young!

  • DONNY SIMPSOM!!! the best BET V J !!!!

  • @njin if you want to know the TRUTH, Production on KISS was TOTALLY revamped by BROWNMARK and arranged by him for Mazarati after he got a dull ass demo from Prince with only acoustic guitar, Brown got NO CREDIT from Prince for his work!!! PRINCE instead gave credit to the engineer DAVID Z (BOBBY z"s brother). This was one of the final straws for Mark that made him leave the Revolution....

  • @xxxfunk Brownmark had little to do with Kiss. I can't remember if it's in the Omnibus Prince Documentary or Prince Glory Years, but it's explained David Rivkin is the one who produced Kiss from the original demo. Mazarati did some session work and vocals, and that's about it. Dan Delaney wrote an article in Mix Magazine that details its origins. Rivkin made the rhythm using a linndrum, delay on the hi-hat, a gate unit on his guitar and reverse reverb on the kick drum. Don't spread misinfomation

  • love donnie simpson.....

  • He looks like such a prat with that hat on.

  • Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis didn't mimick anybody kingofdaundaworld............idiot

  • @kevjev I said Mimed...Theres a difference. And I know you aint actin like Jimmy and Terry made Time music are you? Are you saying they wrote get it up, girl, gigalos, ice cream, c'mon all those songs where done with prince morris and jesse (the bird, and jungle love), although great producers. Show me their contribution to Minniapolis funk during the Purple Reign, and Ill understand until your an idiot because they werent important enough for me to ever mention by name. at this point

  • Processed hair.

  • Hey Jesse Prince you will never be but still a good try.

  • Funny part about that. Is that he is probably the only one associated with prince that was writing producing and recording his own music, while all the others basically just mimed prince songs ( the time van/app/anything six shiela the family) so give it a break. Jesse was great in his own right as far as being talented and brave enough to step out side that huge shadow. But any way I understand how the look might scream of prince wanna be but really he was doing his own thing as a spin off.

  • @kingofdaundaworld Mazarati, Andre Cymone, and Dez Dickerson, and Alexander O'Neal ALL brought things to the table that contributed to Prince's work. There is no way that one can say that those individuals sounded like Prince anymore than HE sounded like THEM! :-)

  • @BlackDiogenes1020 I agree. I was talking about The Time albums, Vanity/Apollonia albums and Shiela E and The Family, but you knew that already. My point is Jesse made good music, on his solo albums period hate it if you want to but he did, and the ones I named before where all had hits directly tied to Jaime Starr, so go figure....

  • @kingofdaundaworld I understand what u are saying. My point was that Prince "used" these artist sounds as much as they did his! He "produced" alot of them because he was the one that Warner gave the attention to. "Kiss" and "America", for example, were originally written and recorded by Mazarati, not Prince. There were several other tunes that went back and forth thruout the camp that landed wherever they did that had input from ALL of the groups that so happened to be under his collective.

  • @BlackDiogenes1020

Kiss was written by Prince for Mazarati, but he changed his mind after they did a version he liked. I think he saw the hit potential in it, so he took it back and reworked their version, while keeping the old background vocals on it.

  • @beat4beat1 lol I agree

  • @beat4beat1 Jesse will get all up in that itty bitty purple ass with that guitar!!! BELIEVE IT!!!!

  • @BlackDiogenes1020 But remember they both come out of Minneapolis, they both was rasied on Hendrix, Curtis, Zepplein, Eddie Hazel, Jeff Beck, Chuck Berry, and were damn near rivals befor the "The Time" so u know Prince knows every trick in the bag that Jesse does ;-)

  • @beat4beat1 Jesse was and still is his own man. He didn't try to be Prince. He was and is just Jesse.

  • I love all his albums incl. the new one, "Verbal Penetration"!!! Jesse is such a GREAT musician!!! Greetings from Switzerland.

  • Jesse's new album VERBAL PENETRATION...........Is slamming . It came out Oct, 27 th of 09......Check out the track Slo Burning !!!!!! The whole Album realy shows off some mad guitar skills from Jesse

  • ok...is donnie really playin the guitar?

  • i got the cd too its kicking also great song he's not trying to be prince his name is mr.jesse johnson and he plays a mean gitar see you soon

  • THis is cool! Minimalist...but great!

  • Let it go.

Last I checked Prince doesn't have a monopoly on wearing hats LOL!. Prince having been Jesse's former employer wouldn't you think it natural for the musical influence to be there and for him to utilize it?

Besides, both have common musical influences even though Jesse IMO is more blues and rock oriented. Don't think Prince hasn't lifted and personalized bits from other artist. He didn't grow up in a musical vacuum.

  • I agree but come on the damn tassles hanging off the hat is just too much!! Lenny Kravitz would not be caught in that. Too Bad Jessie didnot have more commerical success. He did a serious funk cut with Sheila E- Shortberry Strawcake on her Glamorous Life CD that was nominated for a Grammy for best instrumental!!

  • Jesse has a new album due out in October. "Verbal Penetration" Vols. 1 & 2.

I'm very nuch looking forward to it!

For anyone who missed Jesse's last disc

"Bare My Naked Soul", It's a release from 1996. A must buy if you can find a copy.

    I highly reccomend it.

  • Woa waitaminute, just as I was closing the window - female singer in this is performance is whats her name....I forget, but she's been singing for Prince since about '97, '98. Darn it, I forget her name, but she still singing with him today. She's also done background work for Stevie Wonder.

  • Marva King???

  • Yes, thats her! Marva with Jesse way before being with Prince starting in the mid 90's.

On another tip, CNN did a news series thing called Black In America, no one was hipped to very relevant song. Sad. Who here knows someone who knows someone at CNN?

  • jesse is my second cousin

  • What has cousin Jesse been up too these days?

  • WOW.....Video Soul!! The good old days!!

  • Jesse should have been invited to do this song at the augaration

  • Donnie Simpson is such a nerd. He was a complete flunky for Prince and The Time

  • He was always high

  • really?

  • Prince may have been jealous too that Jesse did Crazay with his hero Sly Stone. So on 7 Minutes Mo' Housequake you hear Prince tear up a sample of Sly's singing from Crazay.

There was definitely a sort of under the radar competition with each other. Jesse was just in a Funk Rock mood and that was the Funk look they did.

  • i totally agree. he REALLY shoulda got outta tryin 2 look like Prince. he's very talented in his own rite, but there's only "1" Prince.

  • wonder why Jesse didn't play this on an acoustic/electric like he did on the album?

  • I saw the Time reunion in Vegas. Jesse did NOT disappoint!!! He broke out into a blues solo that was absolutely SICK!!! To me, Jesse WAS the show.

  • You are amazing, how do you find this wonderful stuff. Man this is Great!! Jesse has been so underated it's shameful

  • I remember this episode of Video Soul. Memories

  • Yeah I remember this as well. It was for the album Shockadelica. He talked about Sly Stone and how Prince stole the title Jesse came up with and wrote a song called Shockadelica. I wish someone would post the Video Soul with Jerome that one was funny. They also had Bowie on too. That was a cool show. Deeper than MTV. You had a real class act with Donnie Simpson and man they changed format and now it's a joke. Give me old school any day. Every body agree?

  • 100%

  • i "second" that! as i remember the story going, Prince liked the album title (Shockadelica) so much that he wanted 2 show Jesse that it would make a cool SONG title... & the song turned out "funky!"

  • Exactly. The difference was that Donnie was a radio host long before he was on TV. He actually knew music.

  • preach brother, Preach

  • I used to love it whenever there was a new season of Video Soul just to see how they decorated the set.

  • WOW I REMEMBER THIS

  • Video Soul with Donnie Simpson hosting Jesse Johnson's Black in America, how cool is this?!

  • Obviously Prince was out around then.

  • Oh my goodness that's Marva King!

  • BET was sold to VIACOM several years ago people. THAT is where the biggest change came from.

  • Robert Johnson basically cooned out for 1Bil$

  • Yo, ain't that the truth man.

  • damn I miss seeing Donnie SImpson the green eyed bandit on Bet. Back then video soul was the s***. jesse was wearing the hell outta that hat.

  • Whoah sugar, After all the talk from forums and stuff, I finally get to see this!! I'd disguise his name (on titl post) because his videos are always gettin' pulled off by the damn Music Publishing Group.

  • I remember this episode of Video Soul! I dating myself, but I was in high school. Damn, music ain't the same!

  • Video Soul and Donnie Simpson were so good back in the days, unlike the unadulterated garbage they call music 2day. He was ready to rip into a guitar solo !!Good God Almighty!!! Jesse Kicks Major Ass!!! Till this day I'm still rockin' Jesse's music. I hope he releases new music soon. Bro' Thanks 4 Postin' the video.

  • @CharlesF365 Check Out Jesse's new Album........WOW !!!! it is realy kicking ass. It came out around Halloween..... It's a 2 disc set. Jesse kicked ass with his guitars on this album.... My favorite is called Slo Burning ! it takes me back to the days in California, 1978-79 , at the low rider shows in East Oakland ,cruisin down the main strip wit the 8 track bumping...Yeah , It's that funkaaaaaayyy

  • @CharlesF365 Jesse's new album is called Verbal Penetration Vol.! & 2

  • Sorry prince,u my boy and all but you're no.2 on guitar. Jesse kills that shit!!

  • Damn Jesse was so sexy back in the day!!

  • Boy, do I miss the days of Jesse Johnson or Andre Cymone stopping by Video Soul for a whole show and Donnie Simpson hanging out at Flyte Tyme Studios. Those were the days...

  • I had a brief showing of Andre on Video Soul with Donnie followed by his "Dance Electric" video on youtube (as soulchild01), until youtube froze my account for some BS!

  • When BET was actually cool to watch, I miss Donnie Simpson and Sherrie Carter and the musicans who would come on and let loose unlike the unwatchable crap they put on today, Thanx Nudelic.

  • newsoul u r right, I refuse to watch BET now. It's all GARBAGE. Everything they show encourages negative behavior in the black community.

  • Bob Johnson found out after Dr. Dre's the chronic album came out negativity sells and that's what ruined mainstream Black Music because the bands, acts and singers of all ages are out there in every genre that Black Folks ready and want to save it but now you have "stan the white man" along with the "coon and Blues poose" keeping that door closed.

  • I feel what you are saying. What's wrong with BET. They can't even have a black host for 106 and Park. Even though the one dude is black put the other one isn't.

  • I still watch BET, but not the new shows (like College Hill and Hell Date) and I refuse to watch 106 and Park and Music Videos! Hmmm............I guess that leaves out 80% of BET that I don't watch!

  • Man thanks 4 postin Jesse's too cool with the hat

  • Donnie let Jesse cut loose you know that little studio can't hold him back

  • Haaaaa,..Donnie Simpson saying "Hold it,Hold it!" I have this whole i-view on VHS.Thank for posting Nu,ya beat me to it!heh heh..

  • really?...if u can, would u be please able to post the remainder of it?
