@Fullmetalsnake4501: I don't get my education about people from stereotyped TV shows. The reason I know Sheldon has Asperger's Syndrome? I myself have Asperger's Syndrome. I research and do motivational speaking about it, and I know dozens if not hundreds of people with it and various other forms of Autism. Sheldon has Asperger's.
@Thepopcornator Exactly. People with Asperger's are as diverse as anybody else and if you know one or just have seen or read about one depiction you can't make conclusions about it. It might be trivial and irrelevant for some people but for those affected it's not. Some can relate and laugh about those things and that's heartwarming.
Sheldon doesn't have Asperger's syndrome, he's just a socially awkward nerd who never learned how to interact with other humans. That's why he always says things that would make sense to him, and it seems offensive to the people he's talking to (but not from his perspective)
@Gagigagu Guess what, most people who have Asperger's syndrome are socially awkward, have difficulty learning how to interact with other humans and often say things that make sense only to themselves, but can be offensive to other people.
the character wasn't written with it in mind, but he has many of the characteristics seen in the diagnostic criteria. i know this because i am trained to make that diagnosis (amongst other ones).
@psychobollox Did someone bring AS to the attention of the writers who then said that it was unintentional? Otherwise, I'd be seriously surprised if it was unintentional.
the science world is full of people who are a fair bit like sheldon, as the predictability of science tends to attract many people who fit into the broader autistic phenotype. i've seen some people during my time at university who would fit that, too. not all would get a diagnosis, though, because that has to be given if there is difficulty in at least two areas of living. sheldon is doing fine in his environment, but might not in the 'ornery world'; he'd get the dx out there.
i'm gonna go with the idea that the writers didn't know, but were just playing up the stereotype of the 'typical' scientist. personally, i don't mind either way. us Asperger-autistics are humans too, and we have our uses and places in society (if only people would let us!).
i've seen behavioural evidence in sheldon that could lead to any number of ICD 10 Ch5 diagnoses, and would be slow to suggest any of them, but they do kinda shine through Jim Parson's acting. He's good!
what? just because i actually know something about a subject, you have a go at me? what does that say about you? there's nothing nasty in my manner at all. there is something wrong with yours, though. you just seem to want to wind people up. what a waste of a brain you're being.
i'd tell you to grow an IQ but you'd pretend to be offended.
get real. look at your OWN faults before you have a go at someone else. because you have plenty.
@psychobollox hehehe how funny, so easily goaded you are. :-) you should be more secure in yourself, don't be so readily prepared to respond to ppl not worth your time. good bye, and geniunely have a good day :-)
@Gagigagu I have to ask, why the hell are you even making this a debate? Does it really matter to you whether he has aspergers syndrome or not? Will it make you like the character less or something? I just don't get the reason for all the fussing over such trivial bullshit.
@roodhoofd74123 Actually, Asperger's is one of the highest functioning forms of autism, which would make it the opposite of the "worst form of autism." FAILED.
speaking as an autistic psychologist who is an autism specialist, the very fact of Asperger-type autism being so 'high-ability/functioning' means that it is not often noticed and therefore very much misunderstood. given that the more obvious Kanner-type autism is so obvious, people displaying that form tend to be 'understood' more, meaning that the Asperger-autistic person kinda has it worse: we just get called nasty shit.
@BabyKagome16 Asperger syndrome is an autism spectrum disorder, and people with it therefore show significant difficulties in social interaction, along with restricted and repetitive patterns of behavior and interests.
This is so funny. I have a son who has Asperger's and this just totally cracks me up. It's so hard to "teach"/explain these skills to someone who just doesn't get it! Too funny.
haha, yeah...it is pretty awesome that a character like Sheldon became so popular on television. He's a great character, and Jim Parsons does such a great job at making him intense yet likeable.

Uumm, i don't know how you guys think about it, but in my Opinion Sheldon is just character. NOT a real Person.
So if you think about it, i hope you'll come to the same conclusion as me, that it is F***ing irrelevant if Sheldon has Aspergers Syndrom. xD
