I will say I have a ton of respect and admiration for him, his songs are good just not really what my ear wants to hear. I like a lot of "ear candy" for my ears in a Jellyfish-Roger kinda way!
I know, it's just preference. My taste lay more in the "sunny"-pop vibe and impeccibly-styled production that Roger does than say the pop that Jason writes. To emphasize my point a little, Jason came close to writing the style of pop that I like to hear from him in his song "Moving Up". I think that is one of his best songs but he doesn't write like this normally. Frankly, IMO, he's run dry a bit(til proven otherwise) and Roger continues to baffle the mind and leave me utterly speechless!
right on Modjohnny. I thought you had jumped ship from being a jellyfish fan. obviously its Jason that is the common thread and yes, hes great. one bit of a fun note. both those records are so technically revered that many top engineers use them to reference their sound set ups when mixing.
and from what I heard from Jack joseph puig ( their co producer, andy had everything to do with it. he also loved jason. its just that he wasnt allowed into the lennon/McCartney songwriting arena.
Andy had fantastic intonation (still does if you listen to his contribution on the LEO album) but from what I can gather he is happy where he is now and any reunion is out of the question. Shame for us but the man has a good life. Peace.
@dirkworld Any movement on this front??? I trust there is a world of fans screaming for a reunited Jellyfish .... if Andy can be persuaded that is, these guys have spoken out in favour in interviews before and I'm sure Chris would love to jump back on bass if they let him! :)
@frovil I am afraid not. it seems as if no one wants to work with andy. I wish people could check their ego's at the door. It's ridiculous to think that because you want to write you would rather not be a part of something timeless. They can all make their solo records and be a part of the genius that was the sturmer/manning partnership.
none of them have written anything 1/10th as good. so just be happy to be a part of something everyone loves.
I know, I can't seem to understand it too. This almost reminds me of the feud the Eagles went through some years back before their reunion.. but look what happened. It has to be a little hard to mend, it must be easier said than done though I think the first step would be to talk about new material then everything should fall into place with playing all the old stuff and what not. I've always liked Jason as a singer also but even he has some limitations. I'm not really digging his new stuff.
It's funny how opinions can differ... I've been Loving Jason's newest stuff... again to each their own... Haha. Oh well... to me it's like comparing Beatles records with all this stuff... It's all sprinkled with magic dust. Jellyfish could obviously write hooks with the best of 'em, as can Jason... Why don't more people appreciate that? That's the mystery!
I'm gonna agree somewhat here with dirkworld. Of course with due respect to Jason, I'm gonna go with Andy cause I prefer more of a tenor style voice than say otherwise. .. leaving Jason out of this category. I like Jason's style too but I'm favoring Andy and Roger over him this time. JAO.
thanks. I wasn't trying to be a muso snob about it with modjohnny. Its just crazy to think that Jason is better as a replacement. I know a lot of us hold Jellyfish really high up their in terms of musical heroes. while Im glad they are playing those songs again. I still cant imagine Andy being so bad of a person that they would Hate him forever. Sometimes stupid things in bands dont let the members see the that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.
this is sooo great. Falkner is a truly great singer as well as being an embarrassingly good songwriter too. just saw these two with Cheap Trick tonight but sadly they didn't do an opening set.
Jason> Andy... Sorry... Jason's voice and delivery are much more natural and emotionally resonant with me... Andy always just felt like a Robin Zander(Cheap Trick) Wannabe to me.
I'd like to see Jason try to sing "glutton of sympathy" or russian hill". while his voice might be pleasant to you, he has neither the range nor the ability to sing in "Soto Voce" which Andy was a master of. Robin Zander and Andy have zero in common other than a love for pop music. Robin is a rock singer . Andy had the ability to sing in many different styles. I am assuming your a music fan and not a singer/musician. a lot of andys stuff is impossibly genuis,
this is obviously not worth fighting about... neither is gonna change each other's opinion... I just always preferred Jason... his voice, songs and playing i find to be more timeless less overtly derivative and less kitschy than the Jellyfish stuff... again only an opinion... Andy's voice always grated on me... made it hard to get into the songs. To each his own i guess... :)
If Jason hadn't been screwed over for songwriting credits on Bellybutton, he would probably be more inclined to perform with Andy again.

He does have a couple on "ok" that I like.. "Komplicated Man" & "Stephanie Tells Me" but the rest are somewhat "flat" IMO.

Better than the original... Falkner's voice is SOOO much better than Sturmer's... IMHO.

!?!?!? glad thats just your opinion. ;-)although we probably will never see andy perform with rog again, i'll take this !

I love the original records and covet them like my Beatles and Who, but you have a point.
Jason proves that he has much more soul in his voice than Andy does.

your on crack. Andy is one of the most unique singers ever.
Jason is ok, but has no emotional connection. andy wrote and lived these words.
