I'm confused, shouldn't Alec wanna marry Jesse only if he's gay and in love with him?
I honestly see no point in a straight man marrying a guy, no doubt Jesse would wanna get plowed by Alec (hell who wouldn't) but Alec wouldn't be able to do so since his hetero penis wouldn't raise to the occasion of Jesse's tight ginger ass

I think you and beatrizngra covered it all. Well done. I can understand you defining the term so sharply, though I do think that in this issue people are using it more informally (without the religious connotation). The fight for gay marriage toward the state is one of equitable civic benefits that mirror those of traditional marriage within the confines of a domestic partnership. Religions are an elective, if someone doesn't like their religion's rules, they should leave it. :)
There are: CIVIL marriage and RELIGIOUS marriage. there are many types of RELIGIOUS marriages, depending on which religion. many of which accept gay marriage (some protestants, wiccans, etc). CIVIL marriage, UNRELATED to religious marriages, are made to give people conjoined CIVIL rights. We want the government to permit CIVIL MARRIAGE, not religious marriage. So, ONLY the government has the right to determine to give this permission or not.
So? What makes him think that the government has a right to determine what's ok for an institution that's based in religion? Religion, which is not under the authority of the govt. I don't have a problem at all with gay people but this is ridiculous.
Because you can be married LEGALLY in a civil ceremony which guarantees you governmental rights not afforded to single people. It has nothing to do with religion. You've missed the point.
@muziel019 I think you missed the point. He does not speak of marriage in terms of governmental rights or privileges. If this is the main goal of gay people then they should fight for a domestic partnership. One that guaruntees the same tax benefits and rights of a married couple. I would support that fully. But by speaking of gay marriage emotional terms, he implies that the institution must be redefined. If that's what gay people want to fight for, then that is not fair.
@beatrizngra Hence domestic partnerships, these can provide people with these exact rights, as I said. And by emotional terms I mean he speaks as if people who are denied marriage are denied equality. That's not true. Yes marriage is a "domain of the state" but its basis is in religion. So to say someone is "married" means it is a religious bond between to people, who then recieve benefits afterwards. I am all for these rights for gay couples, but by def. marriage can't be homosexual.
@pfrye66 So you're saying that people with a religious bond receive benefits? How about the State being laic? Everyone should have to right to the same benefits. So, the State should either deny benefits to people with this "religious bond" or give them to everyone, since right-giving shouldn't be based on religious matters.
@pfrye66 I believe it when you say you're not a homophobe (really :)).. i just don't see the problem to give the guys the right to be legally together forever with some civil rights :D
@pfrye66 there are: CIVIL marriage and RELIGIOUS marriage. there are many types of RELIGIOUS marriages, depending on which religion. many of which accept gay marriage (some protestants, wiccans, etc). CIVIL marriage, UNRELATED to religious marriages, are made to give people conjoined CIVIL rights. We want the government to permit CIVIL MARRIAGE, not religious marriage. So, ONLY the government has the right to determine to give this permission or not.
@beatrizngra Yes, well the term MARRIAGE is religious. So DOMESTIC PARTNERSHIP does not imply a religious institution. ANd you're right, right-giving shouldn't be based on your religion alone. Hence DOMESTIC PARTNERSHIP offering the same rights. I have been saying that the whole time.
@pfrye66 You're right. Unfortunately, the rights given to the members of a domestic partnership are not the same given those who are legally married. Since I believe it is contradictory for homosexuals to have a christian marriage (but like i said, some other religions permit it), I would be completely satisfied if at least the rights and recognition of domestic partnerships and civil marriages were the same. Then, I would never fight for gay marriage anymore.
@pfrye66 Well then all legal "marriages", whether between a man and a woman or between two people of the same sex, should be called "domestic partnerships". Don't call them two different things under the law, and everything will be swell.
Except marriage was NEVER, EVER, "an institution that's based in religion." Marriage was a business deal between men, where women were thought of a property, and inferior to men, that is why the woman's father had to pay a dowry to the groom's father. Marriage in it's origins was never between a man and a woman. It was between a man and hundreds of women plus a few thousand whores. I Kings 11:1-7 ) If you're going to use religion, at least learn the bible first.
@soymexboy Yes, furthermore it was between families, in order to help concentrate wealth and perpetuate the feudal system, and of course more generally to make political alliances.
I guess even literature like Romeo & Juliet is too obscure for some people...
More reasons why I admire and love this man. Not only for the LMAO character he plays on 30 ROCK or whenever he's on SNL, but simply for the principles of equality that he holds. Daddy Bear, you rock my world. =)
Isn't it amazing how public perception of Alec Baldwin has changed in just a few years? Remember when he told his daughter she was "a thoughtless little pig"? He's certainly changed--at least from the position of the rights of strangers. I mean, hell, I'll take the support of just about anybody in our quest for the right to marry, but I could certainly wish for a more kind and upstanding champion.
This just proves how FUCKING AWESOME Alec Baldwin is. Not only is he insanely talented, he's decent enough to stand up for the rights of others. Kudos, daddy bear.
@TitanNV28Coral With marriage comes benefits. There's the right to make medical decisions for your spouse, property and inheritance rights, tax benefits, discount or family rates on all types of insurance, immigration and residency benefits, even the right to visit them in jail. It's just not to get the marriage certificate, its wanting to have the same rights heterosexual couples have.
@eSilva90 jajaja.... I actually knew all that. The thought behind my comment was that I wish marriage wouldn't be the permission and the 'license' to do all that you have mentioned...
@piccini9 His daughter twittered for her friends to wear purple so she's not into the hate thing either. She actually has to be home schooled for the harassment she gets about her dad.
@ferriswiel , if not the state, the who? States (whether they be US states, or countries around the world) have always been the ones to license, register, and define marriage's rights and responsibilities. Sometimes religious (or secular) groups get involved in officiating at weddings, but that's the sole extent of their involvement.
@ferriswiel yes it should (marriage, domain of the state), because some legal rights are only assured through marriage like health care, social security like retirement pensions, etc. and all of these are maintained by the government
I've always said that outlawing same-sex marriage isn't as much of an affront to gay people as it is an affront to single people.
