Supposedly, as per the "Wired" book about John Belushi, he wasn't paid for this appearance, instead, he asked Lorne Michaels' production company Broadway Video (who produced this Steve Martin special) to have "one free year" to do whatever he wanted when he visited the Broadway video offices, things like being able to help himself to the refrigerator when he wanted and that people there should be nice to him. Michaels complied and John did what has to be one of his final TV appearances.

It's really two American brothers accidentally walking into the Prague opening of their American artist friend's exhibition. A few cosmetic changes needed to update it, like baseball caps with sunglasses on top, flip-flops, Starbuck paper-cups in hand, campy American accents, and chewing gum, but otherwise it is spot on.
has anyone seen the original "two wild and crazy guys" titled the blues brothers? i've been looking have been unsuccessful. if you find it please send it to me or give me a link or something. :)
you dont have a clue about czech people, they dont even have czech names, they dont speak czech and what the fuck is with that russian accent? i odnt care what you say you ignorants, if you want to copy foreign culture, learn about it first.
Note that although these characters originated on SNL, this particular clip is not from SNL, but from "Steve Martin's Best Show Ever", from November 1981.
Awesome classic SNL, back when comedians were truly funny. Even in the raunchy segments, they still had a way of having class and real talent/humor unlike todays smut they try to pass off as humor.
I'm from the USA and I'm sitting in Prague right now at Czech Republic. You may make fun of us too, but personally I can't think of a better people to do it. ;-) It's just good fun.
Back in those days, all the Eastern Bloc countries were "behind the iron curtain" and the stereotype was the same for all of them, including that the women looked like Belushi's character. I don't think they meant to pick on Czechoslovakia, but they probably chose it because nobody knew anything about it so they could just be weird and nobody would know the difference. If they chose something more obscure, like Ukrainian, people wouldn't even know it back then.
But back then it was not Slovakia, it was Czechoslovakia. So, in this clip, they are from Czechoslovakia. If we saw a skit with them in it today then they'd be from Slovakia, today.
In my opinion someone did not know how thosetimes czechoslovakia was. this kind of humor is for the less inteligent ihabitants? i think yes.
by the way, the czech spoken text is absolutely not in czech, even no slovak(polish) language. translations are not just about opening the dictionary :-)
If I remember it right Steve Martin lived in Chicago which had a large Czech, Polish emigre population for time. On the NBC website they have a skit which have them speaking a lot more Czech. They also show their vacuum cleaner straight from Bratislava, with Pozor on it. To all the native Czechs out there chill out;SNL has been on the air for 30 years and makes fun of everything. My dad had the same exact pants when he came to America until my mom got rid of them. Immigrants do funny things.
i heard that this show is really big in america but i don't find it funny at all, maybe its for kids or something? it's not a cultural thing because there is a lot of american comedy i do like but i just find this to b terrible.
I was born in Trutnov- VERY CZECH and to me this IS hilarious. Not only does it remind me of Some Awkward Czechs I know, but also a great many Slavic newcomers. naturally all in GOOD FUN - MOJO BABY- and this has SERIOUS MOJO. (Swingin mojo none the less). lol. Now WHERE is the skit Czech bros Vs. Roxburry Guys??? NOW THAT was PERFECT! (P.S. I think the Abundant intellect is what most find threatening about the Czech culture- so this is America's way of dealing with that...) he he he.
Do you have any more footage from that show you can post? I'm looking for Steve's list of things I'm thankful For. (I am thankful that Jonas Salk decided to go into medicine instead of becoming a member of the Temptations), etc.

People that can't laugh at themselves really annoy the shit out of me. I am 100% Czech-American, and this was one of the funniest things I saw when I was growing up. I used to go around the house immitating these guys, and my family would laugh their asses off.

I don't see anything in this skit that is representative of the Czech culture. Perhaps if those elements were truly there I would find it funnier.

Well the West (England and America) have a long history of portraying the eastern block as ignorant and backward. Chamberlain did that in 1938 by calling Czechs something like "an unknown people from a far off land" Yeah, it's dumb, but that's SNL.
LOL, there was no "eastern block" in 1938! Czechoslovakia was the 5th richest state all over the world. Just because of Chamberlain there were Nazis and communists - and the Czechoslovak economy got worse. Eastern block was there after the WW2, not before it.
