  • I Played the Heck out of this record

  • If I ever find the inspiration (girl=**tch) behind this song...straight in the mud she goes...I love this song, but so sad....

  • Ashamedly not a hit in England.Top record none the less.Pax to all from 73soulboy.Xxx.

  • Lets get funkey

  • Many of their post Motown recordings were worthy of the accolades they got while still recording for Berry. When I first heard this back in the day I thought 'They REALLY don't need Motown' because their sound transcends ANY label...

  • Reminds me of the first girl I fancied, at Minchenden School in 1973."10/1 I'm betting, girl there's no forgetting you"!!! Pax to all from 73soulboy.Xxx.

  • Memorable!!!!!

  • @paulibeva Enjoy !

  • I played the hell out of Main Street people when I was a kid...I still have the vinyl. Classic song...

  • one of THE great tunes RIP Levi on a superb performance along with the boys..

  • Whomever was thee inspiration for this song needs to be pushed in the mud...oh if I ever see her...in the mud you go sukkka...and you're lucky I love this song

  • "excellent"!!

  • I wish he would call me.

  • One of the Tops best albums but unheralded....I wore out the vinyl on this in college....just the best !

  • After so many great songs at Motown, this was an outstanding record which should have done much better. While I like Are You Man Enough? by them I'm surprised this wasn't even bigger. Had it been in a soundtrack as well ~ who knows? Love this tune!

  • Fantastic!!! The Lambert/Potter team has been underrated ever since but they sure damn churn out wonderful and soulful plus heartwarming music! For me they are the unsung heroes of musicdom!!! This kind of music isn't heard of anymore. Sigh!

  • this was after the motown days this was a bad album main street people there's another song on this album called it won't be the first and it won't be the last i wish that this be posted if anybody has it

  • I love this song.

  • serio

  • THE TOPS,THE BEST!

  • now this song is for ml fi yc for you xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

  • The ultimate "beach music" song. You had to be there.

  • @doyoubarnes Iwas baby!

  • @doyoubarnes I was baby! Pax to all from 'SoulBoy' Smith.Xxx.

  • Classic tune from 1973.Strange that such a famous ' Tamla Motown' group should sing something so 'Philly' sounding, this could easily be The O'jays. Pax to all from Ian 'Soulboy' Smith.Xxx.

  • @Mr1973ian the Philly sound was born out of regard for Motown........so it seems

The Tops should be doing something like this.....one of my favorites by Levi and

the Tops.....I put this song on all my CD mixes, cant get enough of Levi's voice!!!

  • @daveydee1142 I also think the singers/groups on 'Philly' were treated far better by their record company than the 'Motown' acts ever were. Which is why many of the biggest acts left. The Jacksons, Diana Ross, The Four Tops, Gladys Knight and the Pips all left for various reasons. Although Ross was favoured in her early career over many better singers!!! Pax to all from Ian 'Soulboy' Smith.Xxx.

  • @Mr1973ian Hi Soulboy, you are right, the Phily stars were treated better, it's truly shameful the way Motown treated the talent they had.........I'll bet if Gordy didn't move

Motown to LA, the Motown sound would've lasted a lot longer. It still is the best sound

that ever came out of pop/soul music.....I cant get through a day without a dose of Motown.

    David D.

  • @Mr1973ian /With the present time being 1973, The Four Tops simply moved with the times. When H-D-H left Motown, other producers started to get their day in the sun as other labels developed R&B departments. Gamble -Huff, Thom Bell and even Holland-Dozier-Holland were changing the look and sound of R&B. Lambert-Potter were another songwritng-producing team with hit-making potential. It's good that the Tops got some more hits from them.

  • @rickydfcc77 Yes indeed we must not forget that 'The Four Tops' had left 'Tamla Motown' by this time. Pax to all from 'SoulBoy' Smith.Xxx.

  • never heard this before great song

  • THIS SONG IS A CLASSIC .

  • This is an absolute classic in soul music - seems like yesterday when at 15 years of age you would hear this from my room - play after play - wonderful post. Rip Levi a soul Legend.

  • Main Street People was a super album, just about as close to Motown as you could get. Levi and the Tops were in great form......

RIP for the three Tops we lost.

    Duke, keep on keepin on....

  • my favorite tune by them period. I played "Main Street People" on a dailt basis. great memories....

  • This is lovely and hilarious: starts out the verse entirely pop-syrupy, insipid little vibe-clavi hiccup starting every line, and then the writer says, "uh, nooo, NOT TODAY" and I think the song modulates through at least five key changes to crank back to the verse. Love it, and why did we completely lose it on the Oldies stations?? I agree, the best they did (along with, and, and, and...)

  • This song is so beautiful. It brings back so many memories of beautiful moments in my life. Thanks for posting.

  • OMG....I love this song....simply the best EVER by the Four Tops

  • S-O-O-O-O many memories.....this song is the best!

  • You haven't been away too long, I can still hear your favorite song, and In my empty bed, in my head I can feel you near. I will always cherish the 33 wonderful years together. The Tops knew how to do it best . I loved this song in HS and still do. And to think I just liked it because it had a good beat and was easy to dance to. Thanks for posting

  • @Mr.SP75 just like wine some things do get better with time....espicially music!

  • best song they ever did

  • mods scooters sun women this song wow memories are to be treasured xxxxxxxxxxxx

  • one of the greatest groups in music history ...lambert and potter

  • This song brings back great memories. it is one of my alltime favs. It should have been a huge hit, but a lack of marketing hurt it.

  • It brings back great memories. This song should have been a huge hit, a lack of marketing may have hurt it. One of my all time favs.

  • I love this song!....... I like the graphics to from this video!

  • ross played this at weston super mare scooter rally last week . and it still goes down a storm . top 70 s track .

  • Hi OasisRelief, Thanks for the plug, Do we know each other or am i being really stupid? Rediscovered this after many years sitting in my box. Is a fab track indeed. Cheers Ross

  • The Best at Their Best !

  • great tune class

  • GOD SAVE DISCO

  • theres people and theres people

  • Wow,unbelievable memories,thank you!!!!!

  • This song got me thru some really rough nights thinking about her....

  • ...in my empty bed, in my head I can feel u near! OMG!!!

  • Went to college in the mid-80's, many of my friends were partial to the Temptations (partially due to the timing of The Big Chill), but I always played the Tops on my radio show. Loved the salute to Levi on the Grammys. Duke's still looking good and Jamie's got a great voice.

  • "....don't you have a heart, I've served my time. Oh it just ain't right but I know its true..10 to 1 I'm betting...girl's there's no forgetting you..." I love this song!!!

  • One of my top 5 Four Tops songs, Just ask the lonely being my favorite. Thanks for posting this overlooked gem.

  • there could be arguments all day about the best song, so i'll chip in with ''Can't seem to get you out of my mind'' b- side off ''Do what you want to do''

  • I love this one and "Ask the Lonely." A good friend, a tenor sax player, toured with them for years. Said they never did this one live. Still, it's a true beach music classic and hard to get out of your mind!

  • Class track from the CLASSIEST Motown vocal group!!

Saw them in the early 90's..... I'll never forget it.

  • Does anyone else think this is the best song the Tops ever did?

  • No I dont think so. Although its very good.

Without doubt the best has to be Do What You Gotta Do.

  • Surferjoe, I'm right there with you. I think this is, if not their best, then at least one of their most underrated songs. I can't beelieve this wasn't even a top 10 song.

  • Songs-that-should-have-been-far-bigger-hits category: this one would be at the very top of my list.

Also on that list from the Tops- "Are You Man Enough" from "Shaft In Africa"- another thoroughly classy, totally inspired effort. LOVE these guys.

  • Surferjoe, again, I can't disagree with a thing you said. The only reason I can figure "Are You Man Enough" wasn't bigger was because some may have felt it was too political or socially conscious. Me? I loved it. The opening line "There's not a street that you can walk/ You've got to watch just who you're talking to" sums up the way I feel in some communities even today.

  • Oh how I remember this song! i was 14 yrs old and it rained like crazy here in LosAngeles that winter. I'd be in the car with my dad and he loved this tune so much. I sure miss my dad so much these days . He was the best father a kid could ever want. Me and all my brothers were blessed. I love you Dad.

    Tony

  • Wow, dude. It is great to hear somebody express such feelings for their dad. Dads get a lot of bad pub these days, but some of them were/are jewels.

  • Thank you barrys. He was a great Dad. I lost him to cancer 5 yrs back and he left a big empty spot in my heart but when I hear songs like this one,it keeps him real close to me.

  • Stringfellows in Leeds Yorkshire...what a brilliant dj and club

  • In the first half of '08 my 17 year-old son told me sang this song all day long, he couldn't help himself. Levi's music is and will be timeless. R.I.P.

  • This song is very touching and moving. It brings back memories of my young teenage days. I found it on my fathers' album. I played it over and over again. Although I am 48 years old now, it still touches my heart in the same way. I love the 4 Tops for this song in particular, Queen Eileen

  • Great track.

  • Thanks for posting this ... Brings back great memories of my frat days and shagging at Crazy Zacks in North Myrtle Beach on those warm summer evenings or Friday happy hour in the early 80s.

Goes without saying They don't make music like this anymore that is still as fresh 30+ years later as it was the day it was released.

  • :-)

  • Hard to believe this wasn't a huge hit. Thanx for posting.

  • :-)

  • @barrys The Tops had left "Motown Records" and didn't get the same atten. from ABC Records-Poor Management of a Great Group!!!!

  • brings a tear to my eye wonderful lyrics, Levi's voice is one of the finest, he will be sadly missed ..thanks for the post RIP soul brother ktf

  • Amazing song. Beautiful voice. Thanks Levi and the person who put this up.

  • Thanks mate !

And yes , ths is an amazing song.

From an era when songs were real songs ; vocalists real vocalists; music producers who produced music and not a product; from an era when music was performed by all this highly talented musicians ! (Sigh)

  • Detroit's finest, He will be sadly missed,

But the legacy of the music is forever. Amen !

    RIP - Levi Stubbs

  • I so love this song! This is my favorite Four Tops track and it's so underrated. RIP Mr Stubbs.

  • Hi , best wishes to you from Germany .... . Btw.: You really really deserved winning the european soccer championships !!!! The spanish team played a wonderful and elegant style !

  • TIMELESS...definetly one of their BEST

  • A criminally overlooked classic record...

Does anyone know who's playing bass?

  • This was recorded at the ABC Recording Studios in L.A. in 1973. At that time Wilton Felder belonged to the cadre of session Players. I don't know it for sure , but it is likely that he is playing bass on this track.

    Cheers

  • Thanks very much, kaedingstein- I knew someone would have an idea. If so, hats off to Mr. Wilton Felder! That's a really bold line in every way and it makes the song.

I always appreciate the help I get on the web...

  • @SurferJoe1 WiltonFelder played bass on this and went on to help form the 'Crusaders' I believe. Pax to all from 73soulboy.Xxx.

  • This song takes me back, one of the best things they did after Motown. Right, Lamebert and Potter did them right. They made some great music after Motown that is overlooked.

This was an awesome song. I loved this tune!!!

  • Great post. Thanx. I never understood why this wasn't a bigger hit.

  • Hi barrys , ... I totally agree with you ! Cheers

  • i bought this album when it first came out and lost it thank you !! i have been looking everywhere for this.

  • Hi Collard65 , I've also uploaded "Tell Me You Love Me" from the same album ( "Main Street People"). Enjoy !

  • Great i'm on it thanks!!!

  • Such a great song--should have been a big hit. This whole album was pretty good. Thanks!

ABC/Dunhill era. Thanks for posting !
