When I watched this I thought it was okay but when the music started playing and you seen him on the moon I was just like "Right fuck it I'm watching it again now" :D
Thank you for this. As I just said on Twitter: "Why they call it fiction and me warped: My Favorite #StarTrek movie is #GalaxyQuest; my favorite #NASA film #SpaceCowboys"
@molloyster412 oh its just a couple of russian nuclear warheads and a dead american now finish your homework and go to bed the gimp is visiting tonight!!!
What You didn't see was in his right hand, he's holding a half finished margarita. How was he able to drink it in the vacuum of Space through his helmet? Because he is he is TOMMY LEE MOTHA FUCKING JONES, that's how!
THIS IS THE WAY I WOULD LIKE TO DAY,ON THE MOON,SO WHENEVER SOMEONE MISS ME LIKE MY GIRLFRIEND I ALWAYS TELL HER "EVERYTIME YOU SEE THE MOON THINK OF ME" AND NOW SHE IS NOT WITH ME:'( SO IF I DIE IN THE MOON SHE CAN REMEMBER EVERYTIME I SAID TO HER "EVERYTIME YOU SEE THE MOON THINK OF ME",AND I'LL BE THERE!
@genmas2er Because someone had to sacrifice themselves, and he chose himself because he was gonna die anyways from cancer, and it was his life long dream to visit the moon.
and also a side note, the whole landing on the moon without an orbiter thing is very unrealistic. he would have crashed into the moon and been pulverized along with the satellite he was strapped to. but i guess it does make for a more light hearted comic relief ending seeing him just chilling against a rock looking back on earth
Very nice and just brilliant movie. 'Space Cowboys' is in my top favorite space movies of the 2000's (along with Mission to Mars, Supernova, Starforce, Moon, Pandorum and The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy). Clint Eastwood was brilliant as always and Tommy Lee Jones character's death was sad but so beautiful and touching. Really wonderful film!!!
This is the regular version of frank sinatra's "fly me to the moon" and it was timed perfectly zooming into his visor with him leaned against a rock looking at earth, brilliant
His body will be in that position for millions of years and his body probably won't decay. Maybe just a little from the air in the suit but that will leak out.
@iWearCapeIRL but would his body not rot? or slowly disintegrate or something? Or would it just remain in that condition unitl the moon itself is destroyed when the sun turn into a red giant after the sun comes to the end of its's life
The greatest part about that is you can fully tell that he was very much alive when he landed. First, he was strapped to the chair when the flight started. He wasnt strapped to it when they show him last. Secondly the footsteps prove he was not only alive, but also able to turn around and enjoy the view before his last breath was taken. One of the greatest endings ever.
@mz74smart the nuclear missiles would have ran out of fuel b4 he would have reached the moon. but it was enough that with the moons gravity he could make it.
@mz74smart no it just ran out of fuel more than 3/4 the way there. but he probably used his astronaut seat to go the half way. besides thats what the whole plan to make sure the missiles go into deep space so they can never reach their targets. thus Hawk had to do this so he can use the fuel so it can never reach its targets on cities.
this movie is awesome! how can anyone dislike it? this is one of my top ranking space flicks next to october sky and but he only reason i am here is because i knew they would playy "fly me to the moon" by the greatttt FRANK sinatraaaaa amazinggg voice!!
Wow ! Some people are usually looking for too much in this movie. Thats not true. This is a great fun geezer movie ever. Client Eastwood is going around collecting men to help him save the World today. So whats if a lot of the "Scientific Facts" did not mess out correctly. Who cares. A funny & entertaining movie, just pure entertainment. We laughed in all of the right places.
very emotional and polished ending. realistically though this is impossible as without an atmosphere he would be dead the instant he impacted against the moon surface.
1977UconnFan, I believe that statement is true. A great ending to a movie along with a rare and beautiful version of "Fly me to the Moon" makes this clip a true masterpiece.
Realistically, he would have died on impact. Without any kind of braking rockets, an object being pulled toward the moon by its gravity would impact at around 5000-6000 miles per hour (lack of an atmosphere eliminates air resistance and terminal velocity, so the object continually accelerates toward the moon). Nevertheless, I still love this ending!
The implication was he made it alive, and crawled to a position where he could see the earth before he ran out of oxygen. I guess he had fuel to insert into orbit, then do a deorbit burn and a somewhat soft landing. He was the hotshot pilot after all.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
i think he would have run out of oxygen(he was near out when he first launched it) by the time he was halfway there, what happened, he could have hit the surface and been jarred from the rocket, slid and end up like that(unrealistic though with the chances of it being PERFECT like that)
look at the tracks, he crawled there for sure. The rocket crashed behind where he is sitting and there noway he would land that perfectly + the big rock in the way. The whole point was he got to see a nice view when he died.
the whole thing about that movie...is that he made it..LIKE HE WISHED ...and that there's no way to know what happened ....except that he made it...and was in front of earth ..were he left the one he loved the most...that's it....

I calculate that without a controlled landing he would've smacked into the Moon's surface at about 1.5 miles per second.

@qed100 He'd just walk it off, take off his helmet, and continue on, cause he's Tommy Lee Jones.
