In spite of having being introduced by Great Britain only shortly after World War II (their design largely influenced by the German Type XXI U-boat), the Oberon class in Canadian service were modernized to utilize the Mark-48 torpedo. Simply put, these old boats could sink any modern warship and/or submarine afloat.
