  • People are being unfair to a wonderful musician who has worked his tail off.. Sure, he plays fast. It's popular. It's crowd-pleasing. It's keeps plebeians interested. I'll grant that. But the fact remains that he does have some lovely phrasing, his balance decisions are always thoughtful, and he maintains control throughout the excitement. Listen without watching, if his showmanship bothers you.

  • Very strange facial expression and unnecessary gesture. he pretends to be enjoying the music but indeed not necessarily. Shanghaiese always loves window dressing.

  • Perhaps a little fast, but wonderfully controlled. Lose the silly tags, they add nothing to the composer's reputation.

  • @XiaoyanGuo

Oh please, here's Pogorelich v=Y7FHHmS4msw, and if it should be a chinese, search for Yuja Wang

  • I think he has very light fingers and cool dynamics in his own way, not just showing skills. Why people say he only shows his skills.....

  • :24 checking to see if the camera is still focused on him

  • Too exaggerated in terms of the dynamics and his facial expression.

  • funny comments!!!!

  • he's so great..

  • The only 'embarrassment' is the face of the sick individual on this youtube.

  • and that would be you. do you really think music exists outside of your perception of it? what a childish viewpoint of object permanency...

  • Thanks for the stream of consciousness. Music exists without you, or me, or anyone intervening. Haydn wrote his masterpieces over 200 years ago. How did they survive all this time without the likes of Mr. Lang, or you, or me showing the world how we feel about them?

  • Please do me a favor and read some Faulkner before you attempt to properly use "stream of consciousness" in a sentence.

Granted, the symbols for music (but note here, organman, not the music itself) are passed on via the score through time. Here, the only thing that "survives" is the score.

Realize this--music does NOT exist without a mind to interpret it. Outside of our perception, it is a complex air wave.

  • And you realize this - your assertions are bogus. This is the last comment you will receive from me. I'm sure your heart bleeds.

  • thank you. please leave and stop embarrassing yourself further via content-less remarks.

  • @AllUserNamesTaken111

Platonic forms anyone? How about the Neo-Confucianist li?

  • (btw, your response is complete nonsense upon inspection.)

  • Organman... Again, not the brightest of comments. Not only is music not there when nobody listens, it is also an acquired cultural asset, that means the "mind frame" must be there to translate the "noise" into music

  • Anything you say. I shall repent immediately.

  • Now that's my organboy. Good lad...

  • And now you can go straight to hell. Oh wait a minute - you're already there.

  • Aaaw, that was mean...

I should have chosen the organ over the electric guitar. I guess then I'd be going to heaven, right? With all the chubby nude child angels playing music?

On a second thought, that sounds pretty grim.

  • Your pathetic sense of humor hardly makes up for your complete lack of knowledge. And that's just the way it should be.

  • Could you specify, instead of just spewing hot diarrhea from your mouth? Do you mean Christian "knowledge", or rather "dogma"? I bet you still believe in Father Christmas

  • I've had it with you. Go away, you pathetic misfit. I, however, will NEVER go away. So get used to it.

In the meantime, might I suggest you drink some hot diarrhea - it'll do you good.

  • "Misfit"? Is that all you got?

I just drank a jug of diarrhea, by the way.

It was delicious. Lots of little nuts n' stuff

  • hahahahahaha

  • ugh.

  • Great skills.

  • Fantastic! What great skill at the piano. Hands jumping about really fast. Pure entertainment! Because isn't THAT what we want? Never mind sublime experiences. I want the musical equivalent of monkeys juggling! Why did pianist like Schnabel, Gould, and Curzon waste their time with expressing anything meaningful and beautiful; they should have just been learning how to play faster and more impressively. Ooooooo aaaahhhh look at Lang Lang go!

  • Actually, the structure of this movement of the sonata is quite interesting. I wrote a paper about it last year in a "Theme and Variations" course.

Anyone here who can read Hebrew... Ask and you'll get it :) lol

  • Bah! Lang Lang is better than Argerich, Michelangeli, Rubustein, Hamelin, Volodos, Godowsky, Lisitsa, Richter, Horowitz, Cziffra, Liszt, and all the other virtuoses!

Ashaushauahsuahs! Its just a little joke, ok?

Now, serious: I like Lang Lang. He is not the best pianist, and maybe he is not one of the bests; but he IS a great musician. That is all, burn me if you want. (and sorry for the bad english)

  • I like as well his actitude for music. And as he is very talented may be give worries to some stupid people

  • No, this is HIS music. That's the difference between a good musician and a great musician - for a great musician, music is always his (or her), for a good musician - always someone else's.

  • why does music have to belong to anybody at all?

  • Why? Because a certain individual - THE COMPOSER - created the music. That's why. Anyone else who comes in contact with music should be extremely grateful that they were given the talent to play. Now if they could only UNDERSTAND the music. But people never learn anything because they think they know everything.

  • The composer wrote down a bunch of notes on a sheet of paper. The performer recreates the music every time he performs it.

You're sounding pretty arrogant here. How do you know Lang Lang doesn't understand the music? And what makes you think there is only one way to understand a piece of music? Aren't you the know-it-all...

  • A bunch of notes? I have nothing else to say to you.

  • oh, and some rests and dynamic markings, articulation and whatnot.

My point is, music is not what's written on the page by the composer. It's symbolically represented in the score, but the actual music is our perception and cognition of the sounds that we hear.

you really are an arrogant bastard and an embarrassment for classical-music lovers everywhere.

  • You are entitled to your opinion, however twisted it is. You use the word 'embarrassment.' The word you're actually looking for is 'truthful.'

As for your ridiculous comment 'the actual music is our perception...' - you have no idea what you are talking about. The score is the ONLY evidence. It is from the score that a performer should get ALL her/his ideas as to how to play/sing the piece. Instead, most people today 'bring themselves' into the picture for one reason - they are not musicians.

  • organman52:I think in my opinion you are very negative ande may be you have black envious.Change for white...like that you will have light

  • Your language is overly harsh but I agree with the substance. You're a man on a mission. Thanks.

  • It would require 20 to 30 Stars to rate this Genius; someone will surely find something to complain about, but it is part of the unique choreography, how Lang Lang expresses his music. The audience felt completely entertained. Thank you.
