  • OMG....ATWT should NEVER have ended....They had the most heart grabbing storyline the last yr. of the show....The Luke and Reid love story...It was so great...I just can't even describe the feeling that storyline gave to the fans. See for yourself...Dr. Reid Oliver's story...watch part 1 til the end.

  • that was so f******* dumb

  • 4) I've written extensively about why telenovelas were doomed to fail so I won't go into here. Basically, with so many favorite shows already airing, few Americans were willing to devote an hour each evening to a show for which there wasn't already an emotional attachment. And let's not forget that many young people were opting for their computers over the TV.

  • 5) Anyway, UPN is a failed network, desperate for cheap programming, They now air old TV shows, some sports and a few B-list talk shows and game shows. As the World Turns would find a perfect fit. First, UPN is owned by CBS. Second, they need fresh programming. Third, they already have experience with 5-days-a-week programs, namely the telenovelas. And fourth, no matter how low ATWT ratings are, they can't be lower than what UPN is getting now. UPN is almost always last in any given time slot.

  • 6) Look in Video Info above to read an article titled, "As the World Turns: CBS Soap Ends, No New Home" from the tvseriesfinale website.

    RIP, ATWT.

  • @NukeOakdale LOL, Harry Reid isn't the only one not keeping up w/ TV News! UPN ended on September 5, 2006! And MyNetworkTV, which tried the telenovas, is not even counted as a network. Sorry....

  • @bmf1706 You're right. In my defense, I first proposed the idea in 2006, when UPN was struggling and rumors of ATWT's cancellation already existed. I later repeated the idea when telenovelas failed, but as you've pointed out, it was no longer UPN. But my failing memory merged the two events. Interestingly, when I mentioned this again last year at a dinner with some TV analysts, no one corrected me! That's how little attention we give to UPN and MyNetworkTV (which I've NEVER watched).

  • @NukeOakdale LOL, that's so true. UPN was so small, but the WB might've done better with soaps. I don't know....

  • 1) CBS had already canceled ATWT in December 2009, yet the news obviously nev reached Senate majority Leader Harry Reid's office. He made this speech on April 28, 2010, complaining that debate on a bill is endless -- like the soap opera, As the World Turns. The producers should have included the footage in one of their episodes, or invited Reid for a guest appearance. Would have been funny. The last episode was taped on June 23rd, and will air in September.

  • 2) As an aside, I had proposed that ATWT relocate to UPN, the failed CBS-owned network. Several years ago, UPN experimented with telenovelas, supposedly the next big thing. These are limited run soaps preferred by many countries, especially in Latin America and Asia. They air daily and usually lasts for 20+ episodes. But like a US miniseries, the series has a conclusion, and the characters are usually never seen again. Popular productions, however, may spawn spinoffs and sequels.
