My brother and I took karate from Sensei Demura in the 70's and 80's. He used to send me to McD's next door to get his coffee after every lesson, and he teased my shy self unmercifully :) He's still a lifelong friend of the family, especially my mom. The doctors tried to kill him recently--hope he gets back to his good ole self soon so he can get back to teaching and makin' movies.
Shihan Demura's 38th Annual Karate-Do Championships including Kobudo(weapons) & Batto-Do(sword) competitions will be held Feb. 21 & 22, 2009 @ Costa Mesa HighSchool Gym, 2650 Fairview Rd., Costa Mesa, CA. See my profile page for more info.
just incase you were still wondering, i JUST saw him this past saturday :) he is doing well. he's 71 now lol, but he still moves like he's 30, the guy is truely awesome!!
i always thought te was indigenous to okinawa, and when chinese chuan fa(kempo) came to okinawa and blended with te (ti in hogen dialect) it was called tode (china hand) or to te jutsu. and was later changed to karate (china hand), then the meaning of karate was changed again to empty hand.
This is an excerpt from the A&E Channel called "The Martial Arts." I've shown this video countless times to students (I'm a teacher), and practically have it memorized. It is a VERY good film.
Id like to see the greats from every art imaginable in a tournament no holds barred, Fumio Demura, Dan Inosanto, Royce Gracie, Matt Hughes, Brock Lesnar, Id like to see them all go at it in a tournament
This documentary is very shallow. This is no where close to the original art. This is modern art.

Recognize the voice of the narrator?
It's Sulu from Star Trek.

Demura was actually the stunt double for Mr. Miyagi. Pat Morita learned limited judo during the war, but never actually learned karate.

Demura has brutal technique, I wasn't impressed by the techniques from the latter students though.
