Other species do have actual intercourse, but I would suspect that, like a fish, the instruments needed are tucked in the tail.

They did it in the elevator, on the refrigerator, everywhere (tom Hanks tells this to Darryl Hanna just before she explains that "she was shy"). Well, it was a Ron Howard movie for Disney and they couldn't bring themselves to show Madison bare chested, let alone give her an anatomically correct mermaid tail. If they did, you would have seen it between Madison's groin flippers, probably covered by scales.
