It's an inevitable fact the humans have encroached in wildlife. Jamie's obviously happy-even if not exactly as she'd live if humans hadn't invaded into her existance. THANK YOU CSNW for doing the work you do. & crayons are cool. Animals are curious & drawn to "human" things even when they're not encouraged by us. Who wouldn't want to draw w/ a blue crayon if given the digits & chance? If you really loved animals you'd never refer to her as "it". Jamie has a name, a gender, & a unique indentity.
Jamie enjoys drawing with crayons, and we want to provide her with the things she enjoys. We never force or encourage the chimpanzees to do anything they do not chose or want to do. We are sharing her personality with others so that people can get to know the chimpanzee person who she is, and part of her personality is her love and aptitude for drawing. To me it would be strange to deny this activity to her and to not allow people to know this about her.
Unfortunately, Jamie will never be able to be introduced to the wild. She was born in captivity in the United States and used by humans as a biomedical test subject. She was raised by humans in an artificial environment and would never survive in the wild.
You have missed the point entirely. It isn't the crayon use that is horrifying, it is the exhibition of the chimp as a specimen. If you read carefully, "ape is better off than it's previous captive circumstances." Regardless, it is a captive, and on exhibition--at the hands of Humans. The captivity shouldn't have happened at all. Watching the chimp "ACT" Human brings tears to my eyes. They are not Human and must be free.
I agree they must be free. This sanctuary does not allow the chimps on display ie: the general public is not allowed to visit them. I see nothing wrong with a video showing them much happier than they were in their previous life.
I appreciate your general concern for the animals in care. To me the animal is being exhibited, whether on-line video or simply to its caretakers. What is sad to me is the unnatural circumstance. Naturally reared wild apes don't like Humans and want nothing to do with us. The ape is being cared for as best it can, albeit. Once a test ape's usefulness ends, They need to be re-inroduced to the wild. I know that is not always possible. Good luck to you.
Demonstrating human-like behavior to get donations. I find this video horrifying. The Circus has moved to the "sanctuary." A cage is a cage (not a judgement). The ape is better off than it's previous captive circumstances. Humans are the undisputed champs. Can we make just a little space in the African forest for a few apes to live free and unmolested? Come what may?
??? Why is this horrifying? Why can't the chimps color if they so choose? There is no one forcing them to do anything they don't want to do. After living their entire lives in research, if coloring makes Jamie happy, then I say - go for it. At least these chimps have a better life and are able to go outside in the sun instead of being stuck in a small cage their entire lives being subjected to god knows what.
That's beautiful :')

This sanctuary is awesome, these chimps would never survive in the wild.
They were in research all their lives, and now they are safe from being used and abused in medical research.
I believe they were all born in labs, and it doesn't work to place chimpsthat are used to humans in the wild.....
I appreciate these videos, and it makes me appreciate these beautful creatures even more, we have a
right to know what has happened to them before and after research. I was born in So. Dak.
