I do believe, were Karen still with us, she'd have expanded her repetoire in the direction of jazz, blues, and of course, ballads. She is exquisite and incomparable !!
very classic ! i enjoy this every night before my sleep, as her melodious voice brings me into subtle dreams. My roommates think i am an oldie, for hearing this tirelessly, but who cares ? it's much more valuable than those trashy ones in mainstream nowadays.
@joeyelmer Richard Carpenter - Karen's brother - played the piano on this track. I think the arrangements on this song are great, and the piano and flute complement Karen's voice quite nicely.
@Evelynngce88 i watched the 1/2 movie. The girl was a daughter of a poor French family whose her mother was a teacher in a small poor village. The guy was a rich Chinese guy living in Chợ Lớn -a famous Chinese market in SaiGon. He gave her a ride, they was touching and then they got on bed. Its about love, sex and the difficulty to marry a girl/guy in a different continent. i have a bad English, so excuse me =)
prob my most fave carpenters record , its so chilled out . THE greatest and saddest talent ever . o karen you were so good .... r.i.p. .... meet u one day up there to tell u how good u really was ( and are )

karen we miss you so much. one gorgeous lady with the voice to match, rich your magical musical talent is so missed too. one magical musical duo that will never be beat.
So far there´s never been a voice with such power and at the same time beautiful pitch. Karen´s ability for wide range harmonics and octaves is without match until these days.
Karens voice will never be matched .reminds me of a lounge in chicago before it grew. It's around midnight she's on stage standing next to the piano live orchestra in the background.Stage light fad to a soft glow.I'm sitting at the bar.The room is filled with small round tables with little red candles burning the audiance is en-tranced with her voice. The smell of smoke, and perfume fill the Atomsphere.a Cocktail waitress quietly delivering libations.swaying to every beat from table to table.
this is my all time fave carpenters hits , it was a b side from one of there 45,s . in my vinyl collection from the 70,s . heavens gain is our loss . love u karen x x
I never thought I could replace Karen Carpenter as my favourite female vocalist. But then there's Alison isn't there. Different genres yes but equally great singers in their own way.
If I close my eyes, I would swear I can hear a sort of rueful smile in Karen's voice. Exquisite. This lady really felt and understood the songs she sang.
The video is about a film where a french little girl falls in love with a chinese man. He has to marry a chinese woman and she has to return to France. The tittle is "The Lover"
I understood the whole story...poor the man, he cried because he couldn't marry to the one he is truly love...His mother forced him to marry the one who he didn't have love but only money...
it just what happened to me... since the first time I saw him, when he run over me with his car...and like in the video, after in his car, just the moment he took my hand... I knew that we will together for a long time... it happened just 21 years ago... when I was 16 and he 20 and now is my moment to take my ship.... cause he never loved me... although we shared a great passion... This video in 15 seconds (0:58 to 1:14) always take me to this time...I WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU..!

I am really suprised to find out how much of their music was covered by African American singers. It goes to show that good material know no boundaries. It is appreciated by all. The Carpenters were really good. The fact that other singers chose to cover their songs, says a lot for how much they were respected for their musical ability among other artists in the industry. Kudos to the Carpenters. Their music is timeless.
In fact, the Carpenters had more top ten hits in a row, in Richard's Producing, Arraigning, and Composing, category's, as well as being Top Selling Singles and Albums of the 70's. They were the #1 selling group of the 70's, and yet, the Liberal Recording Artists, refuse to give their due credit and admit them into the Rock and Roll hall of Fame. And why... Political.. That's why I don't place any credence on awards from the Liberal Arts Establishment, Period.!!
@MrSonny119 -- Why do some folks insist on framing everything in political terms? I loved the Carpenters in the '70's and I still enjoy their work today, but Richard Carpenter's throwing a little fuzz-tone guitar on a couple of songs didn't make them rock musicians, no matter how many records they sold.
@MrSonny119 The politics that are keeping the Carpenters out of the Hall of Fame aren't Liberal or Conservative. It has to do with egos. One in particular is Arif Mardin. Chicago is not in the Hall of Fame. Nor Three Dog Night....Blood, Sweat & Tears.....and the list goes on.
If that's the case, then I truly feel sorry even more, for all the Artists that deserve to be in the R&R Hall of Fame.
Their should a Music Hall of Fame, for All Categories of Music, except that gangster Rap garbage, which is NOT music, period.!! And the Judging of who is admitted, would come from both the Fans, and the Music Critics, like Rolling Stone Mag., etc., combined into a Total points system. But that's just my opinion.
@ladynastailgic -- Yes, they were good. But I'm not sure you can call this "their song" since Leon Russell wrote it and recorded it a year before The Carpenters.
I will say this again and again, til I die, No one, and I mean NO one, can sing like Karen Carpenter..!!! Her beautiful angelic haunting voice, just pierces my inner being and soul.!!
This song, like so many Carpenters songs, is so perfect for Karen's Voice. I also love Richard's Piano Solo, in this song.!!
Karen lived a life, most of us only wish and dream of. She was so Talented and Gifted. A part of me died too, when she died that day. Rest in Peace Karen.
I don`t know the year this song was made, or recorded for the first time, but this is, for sure, one of the best american songs played in bossa nova rhythm. I`m Brazilian, I love bossa nova, and love this song, but only this version, with Karen Carpenter.
@calgarywino If you search YouTube a little you'll robably run across a clip with him while still in a trio (pre-Carpenters) doing a solo. He really is that good.
I don't think anyone comes even CLOSE to sounding like Karen Carpenter.
Her voice was like VELVET - everytime I hear her on my CD's - she just makes me melt. Her brother was so VERY TALENTED writing and doing all the arrangements and harmonies to the songs. Another LEGEND that has sadly passed away - SUCH A SHAME!!
karen is spectacular,i love this version of the song, she sings so effortlessly,a true treasure that is badly missed from the music industry today, not too many true vocalist out there today that can sing virtually anything and she sounded as good live as she does on her albums, not many today can say that, when you watch awards shows now and listen to artist sing,in many cases make you wonder how they are even up there, lol, they just better be glad they can fix bad vocals in the studio
Hmmm, I love BOTH renditions. I mean, u get totally different colors when u listen to them. With his version, I see blues, but with hers I see reds. Maybe it's the musician in me coming through.
(ExposingTheGOP), Socrates said: "I do not know anything". So, I do not either and neither do you I guess, unless you consider yourself to have the absolute truth about God.
I know that Karen was an excellent drummer and she could both drum and sing simultaneously without missing a beat.. Is that her doing the percussion in this song, do you think?
@tomatoangel1 Yes, it is indeed her on the drums. She was as good a drummer as she was a singer. If you haven't, check out Carpenters early stuff from "Ticket To Ride" and "Close To You."
The Definitive version is this one by our Beloved Karen Carpenter ..how she can glide from one octave to another in such effortlessness ...of course in the hands of an awful singer like , Shirley Bassey....well, take a bucket with you, you'll need it to throw up in...talk about butchering a song ..UGH !! God Bless Karen ..xo

Surely one of the best voices ever, damn shame she had to pass at such a young age, may she rest in peace.

When Karan died, the heavenly choir got better.

Actually, no, because there is no Heaven, since there is no God. But your sentiment is appreciated.

I know that Karen was an excellent drummer and she could both drum and sing simultaneously without missing a beat.. Is that her doing the percussion in this song, do you think?
tomatoangel1 2 years ago
@tomatoangel1 Yes, it is indeed her on the drums. She was as good a drummer as she was a singer. If you haven't, check out Carpenters early stuff from "Ticket To Ride" and "Close To You."

8s really an interesting song.
and a nice of karen carpenter..

This song showcases the genius of both Karen and Richard Carpenter.
Richard was a GREAT arranger and piano player as well as Karen's voice which was GREAT as well

I don't know Gcoochy, some kind of percussion instrument. Sounds like a rattlesnake, have wondered the same thing. Used to hear it more in the 70's.

Better than George Benson. Sorry.
weottertalk 2 years ago
That's ok, I'm sure George Benson did not mind the royalties he recieved from it, and I doubt he would dispute that it is indeed a better rendition.

I like George Benson, very much actually, but this version is spectacular. Karen's stunning vocals are in top form on this one. Perfection.

@04083jps Actually this is an old Leon Russell song, before George Benson, I love all three versions. Check em out.
