Olajide showed a great left hook in flooring the Blade. Just didn't , or couldn't, finish the job. Every time Olajide was rocked or floored by Barkley he shimmied, sparkled, staggered and then lost. Maybe he should of spent less time on his ring appearance and more on his footwear and and fight plan.
Geez looking at this reminds me how great boxing was compared to the junk we get these days. iran was an underrated boxer, he could and his jab was pretty good.
Marv Albert was awesome at calling boxing matches. I love his "OHHH!" when he reacts to knock downs. I like the way he sums up the end of this fight "in a wild one..."
The SILK was my man! I loved his style in the ring Pretty boy that can puch! Never could go over the top by winning the big fight however, always put on a good performance. Loved the boxing middle weight division of the early and late 80's
Yes I guess some guys are just big-boned also.Back then these guys really trained and cut weight, but at the same time retained their body frames.Look at them both!! Also Oladjade had a big pro blem with those stylish shoes. He is constantly sliding and slipping!
Actually, as I recall, in the post-fight interview, Olajide said that the ref "Stopped it at his best discretion." Yeah, it may have been a little premature, but the Silk wasn't defendind himself. Main thing was he didn't get seriously hurt.
do you guys feel it may have been stopped too quickly? feel olajide was evading mostly well nd was fit enough to recover- he seemed furiuos at stoppage and can understand why. ps- what happend to olajides nephew who turned pro c2/3 yrs bavk with fanfare then got ko'd?? still fighting ?
It was Mike's younger brother , not nephew. He broke his leg in that KO'd, he was never as good after. I trained in Vancouver at his Dad's gym before they moved to New York. Mike always had a weak chin and tried to concile it. I saw him go down in an amateur club show, he couldn't handle punchers, he was a good athlete but he didn't like getting hit. Once you got to him , he would lose composure.
I forgot how slick the silk was... he could box is ass off

Don't you just love watching fighters with Jheri curls get a serious beating & watch that hair shake & shimmy with each big punch? Priceless.......

Olajide made no effort at all to throw an over hand right and open up that cut on the left eye. His only chance to win.

What a slug fest olajide was slipping a lot of punches, with a little more luck it coulda been reversed, lottta bombs being thrown.
Godd tilt nonetheless.

I forgot all about Michael Olajide. Yeah he was a pretty good fighter. Too bad he lost his vision in his right eye to frequent eye injuries.

Forget the knockout record Iran Barkley was heavy handed.
86pimp3 4 years ago 2
Yes! James Toney says he was the most heavy -handed fighter he ever faced! He made this statement during an interview!!

Heavy handed or hardest hitter? because i recall james toney saying the hardest puncher he ever faced was Merqui Sosa? could be wrong though :)
olddirtypelican 2 years ago
Heavy -handed.!You are right also because Toney did say Merqui was the hardest hitter! Good confirmation!!

Barkley was so big it's a wonder he could ever be a middleweight. Just look at his biceps! He never was cut to be a middleweight.

Olajide was very good for sure. But just not strong enough to withstand brawler-types like Barkley.

I remember this one. I had actually picked Olajide to WIN because I thought Barkley was too UNPOLISHED. Obvioulsy, I was wrong.
If I recall, this was Ring Magazine fight of the year for that year.
