I'll rephrase - For example, a present day rock is found to contain a ratio of say two isotopes, a parent and daughter (keeping it simple for sake of argument). We know the rate of decay from parent into daughter, so we can extrapolate back in time to determine when the rock formed. At that time point there would be a higher proportion of the parent isotope. But how much higher? Crucially important in order to make our rock age calculation is knowing what that initial ratio of isotopes was.
What is not explained here about radiometric dating, is how we can determine what the isotope ratio was (the initial state) when the rock was formed, in order to zero our clock?
@kipling1957 IIf you know the rate of decay is constant and that no known force can alter it then you can accurately measure the age of the rock. If I am correct it sounds as if your asking is it possible that the radio active decay might have started first then the rock later form around it, therefore the rock might be actually younger then the decay. I'm not sure, I would have to research it further. Obviously they must take such variables into consideration.

Any of these theories will be for potentially explaining how one could happen again (I notice by your use of "a" big bang you could have meant this) but there is absolutely no testable way of knowing what came before our universe's existence.
There are already tests on what happens before B-bang, they are testing these theories as we speak. Your claim that there is absolutely no way to test for it, shows how behind you are in science.

You should rename this video Earth: How scientists can assume the age of the Earth. How do you know that is a meteor rock and it is the oldest one on Earth? Obviously, you've held every rock and meteor on the planet. Since when did rocks start giving birth? All rocks have been here since the beginning in one form or another. There is something I don't get about radioactive dating.
all of this assumes that initially the material of the sample contained no lead whatsoever. If, when it formed, it contained lead as well as uranium, that would throw the ratio, and thus the age off considerably.

Led doesnt change the half life decay. and even if it did the two minerals dont mix, they might occur in the same "stone" but they are still seperated. like goldore for example, even if there are both gold and stone in what looks like a single material they arent mixed on molekule level. so we can "seperate" them with for example heat to melt of any metal in the rock, heat wouldnt change the decay ratio.

This has no bearing on how God created the planet. The bible even talks of great earthquakes coming towards the end of days, the rapture, all of that. @Tom6093 This is a great question, my favorite: I know one argument on this: It is thought that earth is in the sweet spot because from out of so many possible solar, a complete series of all possibilities form in curve, and one or two every 600m light years or so, a planet will form in the sweet spot. Given the size of the observable and measurable Universe, it is really possible to have a planet at every distance possible from its star within every type of solar system- A very exciting idea.

I just like to see all the evidence and try to understand why people are certain the Earth is around 4.6 billion years old from first principles.
I'm sure a little guess work is in place where, for instance, lead is mixed with uranium in the same mix all over the world so supposing it must be due to decay when uranium is present.
I thought at first you were questioning the validity but certainly not from a purely creationist 6000 year perspective. Never be afraid to challenge arguments even from some of the great thinkers and scientists of our time. It is your right to do so. There is a difference between the search for truth and the blatant half truths and lies for a young earth that is expounded by the Kent Hovind school and his followers.
Please question and criticise but I ask all commentators to do so in an intellectual language. My answer to Neely005 is that I personally think (as I'm sure many others do) that Kent Hovind is a con man. Even those scientists who beleive in God find him an embarrassment. The Roman Catholic Church now accepts the scientific view of the age of the earth as proved by radiactive decay and of biological evolution.
In 1904 Earnest Rutherford revealed what he had discovered about the phenomenon of radio-activity. How many eminent scientists specialising in the field of radio activity must there have been sinse 1904? Are we to suppose that they must have all been duped or have been lieing to the general public. I've never heard of one eminent scientist who has supported Kent Hovind's view or should I say his pseudo science!
Kent Hovind is not a real doctor his degree is from an unaccredited training establishment. Are you seriously suggesting all these eminent scientists have been duped? Kent Hovind is a joke and a laughing stock of the intellectual world. He's nothing but a con man. He would not find a lecturing post in any reputable university.
the basic answer is radioactivity. But does it ever go over the foundations of logic its based on? the postulates you'll find, are rather surprising. kent hovind goes into more detail than this repeated assertion
This documentary is made for the lay person and not those studying geology at university or higher education. There are just to many eminent and highly educated scientists who would support the view given in this video.

I'll rephrase - For example, a present day rock is found to contain a ratio of say two isotopes, a parent and daughter (keeping it simple for sake of argument). We know the rate of decay from parent into daughter, so we can extrapolate back in time to determine when the rock formed. At that time point there would be a higher proportion of the parent isotope. But how much higher? Crucially important in order to make our rock age calculation is knowing what that initial ratio of isotopes was.

@kipling1957 IIf you know the rate of decay is constant and that no known force can alter it then you can accurately measure the age of the rock. If I am correct it sounds as if your asking is it possible that the radio active decay might have started first then the rock later form around it, therefore the rock might be actually younger then the decay. I'm not sure, I would have to research it further. Obviously they must take such variables into consideration.

Any of these theories will be for potentially explaining how one could happen again (I notice by your use of "a" big bang you could have meant this) but there is absolutely no testable way of knowing what came before our universe's existence.

You should rename this video Earth: How scientists can assume the age of the Earth. How do you know that is a meteor rock and it is the oldest one on Earth? Obviously, you've held every rock and meteor on the planet. Since when did rocks start giving birth? All rocks have been here since the beginning in one form or another. And if it's a meteor, are you familiar with the science of where it came from? You would have to assume the radiation formation or decay is the same out there as it is here.

There is something I don't get about radioactive dating.
all of this assumes that initially the material of the sample contained no lead whatsoever. If, when it formed, it contained lead as well as uranium, that would throw the ratio, and thus the age off considerably.
Has this been accounted for? What's the scientific explanation to such a discrepancy?
I'm not one of those young-earth maniacs, I just found this to be a bit odd, and frankly I doubt radioactive dating now...

Led doesnt change the half life decay. and even if it did the two minerals dont mix, they might occur in the same "stone" but they are still seperated. like goldore for example, even if there are both gold and stone in what looks like a single material they arent mixed on molekule level. so we can "seperate" them with for example heat to melt of any metal in the rock, heat wouldnt change the decay ratio.

Ahh I see. I forgot about that. I recorded them on my DVD recorder hard drive,then on to DVD, then put the DVD into my PC's DVD player. Flasked it with a free program called Flask Mpeg to turn it into an Xvid format. Edited the Xvid into 10 minute sections using Virtualdub.

Most religious wars are in the middle east. Most state polititions use their faith to be a good representitive . They pray about it. Not start a war. @DrMontague Natural disasters have absolutely nothing to do with God. Tectonic plates Shift because of the rotation of the earth and the earths axis. This has no bearing on how God created the planet. The bible even talks of great earthquakes coming towards the end of days, the rapture, all of that. Gods love for us , doesn't mean he's gonna be superman and save us from natural disasters. But he does work in his people to go to Japan and help with food, water and search parties.

And since the surface of the earth is self generating, This proves my point that 4.5 billion years ago. It took an intelligent designer to keep life going. Look at other planets in our solar system. No life at all. Mars is the closest we have come to seeing life beyond our planet. Why is that ???? Why is earth still spewing life and regenerating itself when the rest are dead ?

@Tom6093 This is a great question, my favorite: I know one argument on this: It is thought that earth is in the sweet spot because from out of so many possible solar, a complete series of all possibilities form in curve, and one or two every 600m light years or so, a planet will form in the sweet spot. Given the size of the observable and measurable Universe, it is really possible to have a planet at every distance possible from its star within every type of solar system- A very exciting idea.

@Tom6093 the infinite Universe, good theory on ways this sweet spot, is in an infinite series of solar possibilities...means Universe must be much bigger than observable and this make sense and agrees with all previous theory. So this scenario is my favorite. The most outrageous, and the only one that agrees with the science that can support one complete narrative without conflict, so far. but it is too far out... I fear it will soon be crushed by some new idea, killing my dream of infinity.

And history shows how in the name of God people from religions are guilty of crimes against humanity. Religion is in a power struggle with the State, they struggle for the loyalty of the people and therefore, they are in a battle for their life,as are all other groups, creeds, etc.

I'm not an expert in this field but the online encyclopedia wikipedia might help you. Remember these videos are aimed at the general public and not those studying at university etc. I've never heard of anyone arguing that these vids set out to deceive people.

I hope you don't believe I think these pro old Earth videos set out to deceive. They certainly make more sense than videos arguing the Earth is only 6,000 years old. I just like to see all the evidence and try to understand why people are certain the Earth is around 4.6 billion years old from first principles.
I'm sure a little guess work is in place where, for instance, lead is mixed with uranium in the same mix all over the world so supposing it must be due to decay when uranium is present.

I thought at first you were questioning the validity but certainly not from a purely creationist 6000 year perspective. Never be afraid to challenge arguments even from some of the great thinkers and scientists of our time. It is your right to do so. There is a difference between the search for truth and the blatant half truths and lies for a young earth that is expounded by the Kent Hovind school and his followers.

Please question and criticise but I ask all commentators to do so in an intellectual language. My answer to Neely005 is that I personally think (as I'm sure many others do) that Kent Hovind is a con man. Even those scientists who beleive in God find him an embarrassment. The Roman Catholic Church now accepts the scientific view of the age of the earth as proved by radiactive decay and of biological evolution.

In 1904 Earnest Rutherford revealed what he had discovered about the phenomenon of radio-activity. How many eminent scientists specialising in the field of radio activity must there have been sinse 1904? Are we to suppose that they must have all been duped or have been lieing to the general public. I've never heard of one eminent scientist who has supported Kent Hovind's view or should I say his pseudo science!

This documentary is made for the lay person and not those studying geology at university or higher education. There are just to many eminent and highly educated scientists who would support the view given in this video.
