  • this is really nice, i want an 89 with a 350, i got two 350 trucks right now but want to have it in a camaro.

  • @WHITEPOPOLO Thanks. Yeah, 350 Camaros are a lot of fun. This was my 2nd one. I like them. If I could find a nice one I would keep it.

  • @chevy385 ya i gotta find one here, i have to ask if theres a video of the rest of this car?

  • @WHITEPOPOLO Not really. Whatever I have is posted here. There is one of the gauges, one of the engine, a couple of the exhaust, and that's about it I think for that one. There are a few of my black '86 also

  • Coulda had an LQ4 for the same price....probably less.

  • @APontiacof455cubes Plus a $700 wiring harness, $100 engine mounts, couple hundred worth of exhaust work, an intake that doesn't fit under the hood, an A/C compressor that doesn't fit, $50 flexplate adapter, ECM and tuning, $50 worth of fuel fittings. Sorry but the L98 rebuild was a better deal and it still matches numbers

  • @chevy385 potential tho. its about the future modifications. LQ4 and LQ9 are unbeatable and probably the best of all GMs engines when it comes to power potential and strength.

  • @APontiacof455cubes Agreed but not entirely cost effective. At the junk yards we have around here a 5.3 is far easier to find. Conversion parts still cost a good bit of money. I picked up a 5.3 not too long ago for my 86 C10. Just to put a carb on it is going to cost me $650. Like I said the adapter for the flexplate and engine mounts are going to cost me $150 between the two. But should run circles around my 305 and net be better fuel economy.

  • @APontiacof455cubes

No way. Everybody thinks they are going to do a ls swap for 1500 bucks. The ls swap into third gen will nickle a dime you to death, and is a can of worms waiting to be opened.... Of course unless you cheap out and do it half fast which many do.. Granted, if you do it right, and can do the work yourself, it is a nice project with good results. Dont forget you should do the 4l60e trans at the same time. I would budget 4-7 k to do it right.

  • @y4utalktome I agree. And at the time I did the rebuild the LS engines were nowhere near as plentiful and cheap as they are now. Lots less conversion parts. Lots less aftermarket. I did this engine back in 2004. Right now I bet I could do one with a 4.8 or 5.3 fuel injected without a 4L60E for $2500-3500

  • How much did the rebuild end up costing? I have an 89 iroc that needs it fierce.

  • @Tyler041390 Total was about $1500. But I put it together myself and installed it myself(with the help of a good friend of course)

  • dam can u tell me how 2 het my 88 irocz back on idle cuzits soungs like if i got a cam i think its becaused i put my timing in 8

  • Bad idle on stock 3rd gens is usually the IAC [idle air control] valve. If it doesent like 8 degrees advanced, just try 6 or 4. Every engine is a little different, but stock the TPI engines are 6 advanced, so start with that and try adding 2 from there, dont forget to disconect the ESC when you adjust the timing. If its a TBI motor 0 is stock timing.

  • no....MAF is the easy one 2 tune....SD has ONE setting...the maf u can program to take almost anything....look at the mustang for an example

  • have you ever tuned a GM product with SD? explain to me how there is only one setting? the MAF will not take almost anything because the limiting factor is the MAF itself. explain how that is better and easier to tune. I would love to hear it. BTW, tuning a Ford EEC IV or V is a totally different animal depending on who wrote your tuning software and who hacked the code in the ECM.

  • nice 89

  • thanks but probably not for long. I am considering parting it out and using the interior and some other things for my '86

  • whats wrong with the 89

  • It has some rust underneath the decklid above the license plate, along the inner rocker panels, and the pass fender has a small spot in front of the door. Otherwise it is OK. I just got a great deal on this '86 IROC that needs an entire interior and I am thinking the '89 might be the donor car for everything. The '86 has less miles and it is all black and has no rust. I can't keep them both so I am leaning towards dismantling the '89.

  • how much do u want for the 89

  • $1800

  • and does it give you more hp

  • It is about the same but I think the Speed Density is easier to tune. 90-92 Camaros and Firebirds had the '730 ECM

  • how easy is to convert maf to map what do i have to do

  • Not too hard. You need a '730 or '727(vette) ECM, a MAP, a new knock sensor, and repinning some wires. The stock '165 has 2 connectors the '730 has 3, and the '727 has 4.

  • hey man how did you get it to run without the mass airflow sensor.I thought you must have that on for it to even run

  • I converted it to Speed Density. When you change it over you ditch the MAF for a MAP. SD runs by the manifold vacuum instead of measuring the air going into the engine

  • you should upgrade that intake manifold to something which supports a higher RPM band.

  • Maybe he likes the massive torque that the TPI manifold makes.

  • The car has the stock 2.77 gears in the rear. I need my torque...

  • hmmm nice i like it i have an 81 but mom needs it to drive to work hmmmm can u cut the price down i know u prob need the money and i need a car 500-750$

  • sorry can't help you there. the '86 would not be so good either as it sat for 10 years, the entire interior needs cleaning/replacing, all 4 tires are shot, and it has a few wiring bugs. The whole car needs to be rebuilt. But I could not say no for $200. I could part it out and sell the TPI stuff for more than that

  • Nice, did you have to burn a prom to get the cam to work? I have a 91 L98 T/A.

  • it took a little messing with to get it right. I used a flashable EPROM emulator to make adjustments on the fly so I would not have to burn 100s of PROMS. It made life so much easier! Then when I had it all set up good I burned the actual PROM. It took some timing adjustments and a LOT of fuel adjustments. It is converted to speed density, so using the 730 was much easier to tune.
